This paper presents a highly efficient aeroelastic optimization method based on a surrogate model; the model is verified by considering the case of a high-aspect-ratio composite wing. Optimization frameworks using the Kriging model and genetic algorithm (GA), the Kriging model and improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO), and the back propagation neural network model (BP) and IPSO are presented. The feasibility of the method is verified, as the model can improve the optimization efficiency while also satisfying the engineering requirements. Moreover, the effects of the number of design variables and number of constraints on the optimization efficiency and objective function are analysed in detail. The accuracy of two surrogate models in aeroelastic optimization is also compared. The Kriging model is constructed more conveniently, and its predictive accuracy of the aeroelastic responses also satisfies the engineering requirements. According to the case of a high-aspect-ratio composite wing, the GA is better at global optimization.

This paper is concenred with a finite volume time domain (FVTD) method for the analyses of transmission efficiency of electromagnetic wave propagation in tunnels with bend and fold. This method is gased on the volume integratio sof the maxwell's equation with respected to arbitrary shaped small polyhedron cells. The advantages of the present mehtod are that the algorithm is very simple since the coordinate system is restricted only to the cartesian, and so the arbitrary shaped boundaries can easily be dealt with since the fields at every center point of the cells are assigned in an average fashion.
We investigate the efficiency of an optical intensity modulator based on an electrically tunable $LiNbO_3$ reflection grating. Assuming a grating coupling coefficient and the waveguide propagation loss, waveguide length is varied to find its effect on the modulator slope efficiency and the device capacitance. With the low propagation loss of the $LiNbO_3$ waveguide, a very efficient optical intensity modulator can be achieved for a low frequency (${\sim}1GHz$) as long as the requirement for the grating coupling coefficient is satisfied.

Wave propagation in gyrotropic or anisotropic medium is analyzed in terms of the eigenmodes of the medium, which are admixture of TE and TM waves. The field composition and the phase velocity of the modes are also determined. The results of the analysis are applied to thin film optical waveguide using such medium as substrate and/or film. Based on the characteristic equations for phase constants of the waveguide, the condition for TE-TM mode convection is derived, and wave propagation in the guide is represented in the form of Jones matrix, which allows a new interpretation in the conversion efficiency of the thin-film optical waveguides.
The waveguide structure effects of a spot-size converter (SSe) of a $1.3\mu{m}$ FP(Fabry-Perot)-LD(Laser Diode) were investigated. Its coupling efficiency and alignment tolerance with a single-mode fiber (SMF) were carefully examined by using a 3dimensional BPM (Beam Propagation Method). It was shown that the fOlmation of enough length of straightened waveguide around the end of the sse region can substantially improve the optical coupling efficiency for a vertically tapered sse. In contrast, a down-taper structure for a laterally tapered sse has superior characteristics to an up-tapered one. We suggested good sse structures which can provide a high coupling efficiency as well as a large alignment tolerance with an .SMF. .SMF.
Concrete's compressive strength is widely studied in order to understand many qualities and the grade of the concrete mixture. Conventional civil engineering tests involve time and resources consuming laboratory operations which results in the deterioration of concrete samples. Proposing efficient non-destructive models for the prediction of concrete compressive strength will certainly yield advancements in concrete studies. In this study, the efficiency of using radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) which is not common in this field, is studied for the concrete compressive strength prediction. Complementary studies with back propagation neural network (BPNN), which is commonly used in this field, have also been carried out in order to verify the efficiency of RBFNN for compressive strength prediction. A total of 13 input parameters, including novel ones such as cement's and fly ash's compositional information, have been employed in the prediction models with RBFNN and BPNN since all these parameters are known to influence concrete strength. Three different train: test ratios were tested with both models, while different hidden neurons, epochs, and spread values were introduced to determine the optimum parameters for yielding the best prediction results. Prediction results obtained by RBFNN are observed to yield satisfactory high correlation coefficients and satisfactory low mean square error values when compared to the results in the previous studies, indicating the efficiency of the proposed model.

In this study, it was investigated about endurance limit and fatigue behavior of load carrying fillet welded cruciform joints according to welding methods of SMAW, SAW, MIG and FCAW commonly using for welding structures in present. Endurance limit carried omit highly in the order of SMAW, MIG, SAW, FCAW and fatigue crack propagation ratio carried out lowly in the order of SMAW, MIG, FCAW, SAW. By these results, it is needed to use SMAW or MIG welding methods for welding structures with small welding capacity and SAW or FCAW methods for large welding structures after due consideration about economic gains and operation efficiency of welding. Fatigue crack propagation ratio is more effected by strength of welding materials than endurance limit of welding materials according to welding methods.
Natural gas possesses several characteristics that make it desirable as an engine fuel; 1)lower production cost, 2)abundant commodity and 3)cleaner energy source than gasoline. Due to the physics characteristics of natural gas, the volumetric efficiency and flame speed of a natural gas engine are lower than those of a gasoline engine, which results in a power loss of $10-20{\%}$ when compared to a normal gasoline engine. This paper describes the results of a research to improve the performance of a natural gas engine through the modification and controls of compression ratio, air/fuel ratio, spark advance and supercharging and method of measuring flame propagation velocity. It emphasizes how to improve the power characteristics of a natural gas engine. Combustion characteristics are also studied using an ion probe. The ion probe is applied to measure flame speed of gasoline and methane fuels to confirm the performance improvement of natural gas engine combustion characteristics.
