Meshfree methods show many advantages over finite element method(FEM) in the class of problems for which the remeshing process is inevitable when the conventional FEM used, such as propagating crack problems, large deformation and so on. One of the promising applications of meshfree methods is the adaptive refinement for problems having multi-scale nature. In this study, an adaptive node generation procedure is proposed and several numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the efficiency of proposed method.
Recently, new functionally graded material(FGM) that has a spatial variation in composition and properties is developed because of its good quality. This material yields the demands for resistance to corrosion and high temperature in turbine blade, wear resistance as in gears and high strength machine parts. Especially coating treatment in FGM surface brings forth a mechanical weak at the interface due to discontinuous stress resulting from a steep material change. It often, leads cracks or spallation in a coating area around an interface. The behavior of propagation cracks in FGMs was here investigated. The interface stresses were reduced because of graded material properties. Also graded material parameter with exponential equation was founded to influence the stress intensity factor. And the resistance curve with FGM coating was slightly increased.
Mode II interlaminar fracture behaviors of carbon fabric/epoxy composites, which are applicable to tilting train carbodies, was investigated by the ENF (End notched flexure) test. The specimens were made of CF3327 plain woven fabric with epoxy and a starter delamination at one end was made by inserting Teflon film with the thickness of 12.5$mu$m or 25.0$mu$m. The equation for mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was suggested based on the effective crack length from the compliance of load-displacement curve. Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was evaluated for several types of the specimens. Also crack propagating behaviors and fracture surfaces were examined through an optical travelling scope and a scanning electron microscope.
A wavelet based approach is proposed for structural damage detection in beams, plate and delamination of composite plates. Wavelet theory is applied here for crack identification of a beam element with a transverse on edge non-propagating open crack. Finite difference method was used for generating a general displacement equation for the cracked beam in the first example. In the second and third example, damage is detected from the deformed shape of a loaded simply supported plate applying the wavelet theory. Delamination in composite plate is identified using wavelet theory in the fourth example. The main concept used is the breaking down of the dynamic signal of a structural response into a series of local basis function called wavelets, so as to detect the special characteristics of the structure by scaling and transformation property of wavelets. In the light of the results obtained, limitations of the proposed method as well as suggestions for future work are presented. Results show great promise of wavelet approach for damage detection and structural health monitoring.
The resistance curves (R-curves) for 381 m crack extension of CLWL-DCB specimens had been determined. The average velocities of the crack extension measured with strain gages were 0.70 and 55 ㎜/sec. The measured rotation angle of the notch faces showed the existence of the singularity at least before 171 and 93 mm crack extensions for the 0.70 and 55 ㎜/sec crack velocities, respectively. The maximum slopes of the R-curves occurred between 25 and 89 ㎜ crack extensions for 0.70 ㎜/sec crack velocity and between 51 and 127 ㎜ crack extensions for 55 ㎜/sec crack velocity During the maximum slopes of the R-curves, the micro-crack localization can be expected, and faster crack velocity may form longer micro-cracking and micro-crack localizing zones. The fracture resistance of 0.70 ㎜/sec crack velocity reached a roughly constant maximum value of 143 N/m at 152 ㎜ crack extension, while that of 55 ㎜/sec crack velocity increased continuously to 245 N/m at 254 ㎜ crack extension and then decreased to the value of 0.70 ㎜/sec crack velocity. The R-curve of 55 ㎜/sec crack velocity was similar to that of the small size three-point bend test, and it showed that small size specimen or fast crack velocity could cause more brittle behavior.

The Newman-Raju formula and contour integral-based finite element analyses(FEAs) have been widely used to assess crack growth rates and residual lives at crack locations in ships or offshore structures, but the Newman-Raju formula is known to be less accurate for the complicated weld details and the conventional FEA-based contour integral approach needs concentrated efforts to construct FEA models. Recently, an extended finite element method(XFEM) has been proposed to reduce those modeling efforts with reliable accuracy. Stress intensity factors(SIFs) from the approaches such as the Newman-Raju formula, conventional FEA-based J-integral, and XFEM-based J-integral were compared for an infinitely long plate with a propagating elliptic crack. It was concluded that the XFEM approach was far reliable in terms of prediction ability of SIFs. Assuming a 25 year-aged coast guard patrol ship had the prescribed cracks at the bracket toes attached to longitudinal stiffeners in way of deck and bottom, SIFs were derived based on the three approaches. To obtain axial tension loads acting on the longitudinal stiffeners, long term hull girder bending moments were assumed to obey Weibull distribution of which two parameters were decided from a reference (DNV, 2014). For the complicated weld details, it was concluded that the XFEM approach could cost-effectively and accurately estimate the crack growth rates and residual lives of ship structures.

Mixed mode interlaminar fracture behaviors of carbon fabric/epoxy composites were investigated through MMF (Mixed Mode Flexural) test by varying mixed mode ratio ranging from 20% to 90%. Mixed mode interlaminar fracture criteria based on NL point and 5% offset point were also suggested in order to predict mixed mode interlaminar fracture behaviors. Fracture surfaces and crack propagating behaviors were examined through a travelling scope and a scanning electron microscope. According to the results, mixed mode interlaminar fracture behaviors can be predicted by mixed mode interlaminar fracture criterion with m=1.5 and n=0.5 on the basis of NL point or mixed mode interlaminar fracture criterion with m=2 and n=3 on the basis of 5% offset point. Fracture surfaces and crack propagating behaviors are sensitive to mixed mode ratios. MMF test can be successfully applicable in evaluating mixed mode interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fabric/epoxy composites.

Cold expansion method is an effective process to retard the crack initiation at a hole and to improve fatigue life by developing the compressive residual stress around the hole. Several researches have been treated for the crack propagating toward a hole around which the residual stress by cold expansion exists. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the fatigue characteristics under the residual stress by cold expansion. Fatigue tests are performed for the plate with a central hole to which cold expansion has been applied, and the effects of the residual stress on the fatigue life are evaluated. Also the fatigue crack growth tests are conducted for the CT specimen in which the residual stress by cold expansion has been generated. The change of fatigue crack growth characteristics by the residual stress is investigated and the effects of cold expansion ratio are evaluated.

The stress and displacement fields at the crack tip were studied during the unsteady propagation of a mode III crack in a direction that was different from the property graduation direction in functionally graded materials (FGMs). The property graduation in FGMs was assumed based on the linearly varying shear modulus under a constant density and the exponentially varying shear modulus and density. To obtain the solution of the harmonic function, the general partial differential equation of the dynamic equilibrium equation was transformed into a Laplace equation. Based on the Laplace equation, the stress and displacement fields, which depended on the time rates of change in the crack tip speed and stress intensity factor, were obtained through an asymptotic analysis. Using the stress and displacement fields, the effects of the angled property variation on the stresses, displacements, and stress intensity factors are discussed.
