  • In this paper, an integrated document input/output system is developed which constructs the graphic document from a text file, converts the document into encoded facsimile data, and also recognizes printed/handwritten alphanumerics and Korean characters in a facsimile or graphic document. For an output system, we develop the method which generates bit-map patterns from the document consisting of the KSC5601 and ASCII codes. The binary graphic image, if necessary, is encoded by the G3 coding scheme for facsimile transmission. For a user friendly input system for documents consisting of alphanumerics and Korean characters obtained from a facsimile or scanner, we propose a document recognition algirithm utilizing several special features(partial projection, cross point, and distance features) and the membership function of the fuzzy set theory. In summary, we develop an integrated document input/output system and its performance is demonstrated via computer simulation.

  • An effective algorithm for implementation of unmanned surveillance system which detects moving object from image sequences, predicts the direction of it, and drives the camera in real time is proposed. Outputs of proposed algorithm are coordinates of location of moving object, and they are converted to the values according to camera model. As a pre- processing, extraction of moving object and shape discrimination are performed. Existence of the moving object or scene change is detected by computing the temporal derivatives of consecutive two or more images in a sequence, and this result of derivatives is combined with the edge map from one original gray level image to obtain the position of moving object. Shape discri-mination(Target identification) is performed by analysis of distribution of projection profiles in x and y directions. To reduce the prediction error due to the fact that the motion cha- racteristic of walking man may have an abrupt change of moving direction, an order adaptive lattice structured linear predictor is proposed.

  • Sampling rates become inconsistent when spatial data in spherical coordinate are re-sampled with respect latitudinal or longitudinal degree for mathematical processes such as Fourier Transfrom, and this results in the distrtions of the processed data in the wavenmber domain. This distortions are more evident in the polar regions. An example is presented to show such distortions during the recovery process of free-air gravity anomalies from ERSI radar atimeter data in Russian Arctic Barents Sea, and a method is present to minimize the distortion using Lambect Conformal Conic map projection.

  • Let ℜ be a *-algebra with unity I and a nontrivial projection P1. In this paper, we show that under certain restrictions if a map ψ : ℜ → ℜ satisfies $$\Psi(S_1{\diamond}S_2{\cdot}{\cdot}{\cdot}{\diamond}S_{n-1}{\bullet}S_n)=\sum_{k=1}^nS_1{\diamond}S_2{\diamond}{\cdot}{\cdot}{\cdot}{\diamond}S_{k-1}{\diamond}{\Psi}(S_k){\diamond}S_{k+1}{\diamond}{\cdot}{\cdot}{\cdot}{\diamond}S_{n-1}{\bullet}S_n$$ for all Sn-2, Sn-1, Sn ∈ ℜ and Si = I for all i ∈ {1, 2, . . . , n - 3}, where n ≥ 3, then ψ is an additive *-derivation.

  • This paper contains a Hough transform based projection method derived from Radon transform for tracking dim unresolved(sub-pixel) moving targets that move along straight line parths across a time sequential image data. In contrast to several recently presented Hough transform methods using a compressed image referred to as the track map our proposed technique utilizing a set of projections taken along arbitrary orientations effectively increases the changes of target detection, and creates a robust track estimation environment by incorporating all the available knowledge obtained from the projections. Moreover, in order to quantitatively assess the estimation capability of the projection-based Hough transform algorithm, the analytical bounds on the Hough space parameter errors introduced by image space noise contamination are derived. The simulation yielded promising results of estimating the track parameters even under low signal to noise rations when our technique was tested against the time sequential sets of real infrared image data referred to as the HiCamps.

  • In this paper, a depth estimate method is proposed using GPU(Graphics Processing Unit) in monocular image. a monocular image is a 2D image with missing 3D depth information due to the camera projection and we used a monocular cue to recover the lost depth information by the projection present. The proposed algorithm uses an energy function which takes a variety of cues to create a more generalized and reliable depth map. But, a processing time is late because energy function is defined from the various monocular cues. Therefore, we propose a depth estimate method using GPGPU(General Purpose Graphics Processing Unit). The objective effectiveness of the algorithm is shown using PSNR(Peak Signal to Noise Ratio), a processing time is decrease by 61.22%.

  • Recently, there is a need for automatic recognition of a variety of symbols on roads because of activation of information services using digital maps on the Web or mobile devices. This paper proposes a method which automatically recognizes 11 kinds of symbolic road markings on the road surface with HOG-SP(Histogram of oriented Gradients-Split Projection) descriptor and shows improvement of lane position detection with recognized symbolic road markings. With the proposed method, recognition rate of 81.99% has been proven on NAVER road view images and the experiments proves the superiority of proposed method by comparisons with other existing methods. Moreover, this paper shows 7.64% higher lane position detection rate by recognizing road surface marking beforehand than only detecting lanes' positions.

  • Algorithm which can analyze the slope failure behavior utilizing the comprehensive information of the dense point of joint poles and the joint set orientations, both of which are obtained statistically, and the defect pattern of pole distribution has been developed. This method overcomes the potential incorrectness of the hemispheric projection method utilizing the joint set orientations only and also enhances the reliability of slope failure analysis. To this end a method capable of calculating the joint dispersion index directly from the joint pole distribution, instead of contour map, has been devised. The representative orientations for the slope failure analysis has been determined by considering the number and orientations of cone angle-dependent joint sets as well as the joint dispersion index. By engaging these representative orientations to the hemispheric projection analysis more reliable slope failure examination has been carried out. Sensitivity analysis for the potentially unstable slope of plane failure mode has been performed. Significance of joint strength index and the external seismic loading on the slope stability has been fully analyzed.

  • Quality assessment ai s to evaluate if a distorted image or video has a good quality by measuring the difference between the original and distorted images or videos. In this paper, to assess the visual qualify of a distorted image or video, visual features of the distorted image are compared with those of the original image instead of the direct comparison of the distorted image with the original image. We use edge projections from two images as features, where the edge projection can be easily obtained by projecting edge pixels in an edge map along vertical/horizontal direction. In this paper, edge projections are obtained by using vertical/horizontal directions of gradients as well as the magnitude of each gradient. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed quality assessment through the comparison with conventional quality assessment algorithms such as structural similarity(SSIM), edge peak signal-to-noise ratio(EPSNR), and edge histogram descriptor(EHD) methods.

  • Purpose: SPECT using a fan-beam collimator improves spatial resolution and sensitivity. For the reconstruction from fan-beam projections, it is necessary to implement direct fan-beam reconstruction methods without transforming the data into the parallel geometry. In this study, various fan-beam reconstruction algorithms were implemented and their performances were compared. Materials and Methods: The projector for fan-beam SPECT was implemented using a ray-tracing method. The direct reconstruction algorithms implemented for fan-beam projection data were FBP (filtered backprojection), EM (expectation maximization), OS-EM (ordered subsets EM) and MAP-EM OSL (maximum a posteriori EM using the one-step late method) with membrane and thin-plate models as priors. For comparison, the fan-beam protection data were also rebinned into the parallel data using various interpolation methods, such as the nearest neighbor, bilinear and bicubic interpolations, and reconstructed using the conventional EM algorithm for parallel data. Noiseless and noisy projection data from the digital Hoffman brain and Shepp/Logan phantoms were reconstructed using the above algorithms. The reconstructed images were compared in terms of a percent error metric. Results: for the fan-beam data with Poisson noise, the MAP-EM OSL algorithm with the thin-plate prior showed the best result in both percent error and stability. Bilinear interpolation was the most effective method for rebinning from the fan-beam to parallel geometry when the accuracy and computation load were considered. Direct fan-beam EM reconstructions were more accurate than the standard EM reconstructions obtained from rebinned parallel data. Conclusion: Direct fan-beam reconstruction algorithms were implemented, which provided significantly improved reconstructions.
