Writing Listening Logs and Its Effect on Improving L2 Students' Metacognitive Awareness and Listening Proficiency

  • This study investigated whether writing weekly listening logs could influence college English learners' metacognitive awareness and listening proficiency. In addition, the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ) was applied to examine the learners' knowledge of their listening process. It is process-oriented research conducted by analyzing the MALQ and students' listening logs as to how their metacognitive awareness and listening proficiency have changed during the semester. Eighty-nine students who took an English listening practice course at a university participated in this study. The research findings are as follows. First, it turned out that there was a significant relationship between EFL university students' listening comprehension and some subscales of metacognitive awareness. Second, the students had an opportunity to reflect on learning through regular listening activities, and weekly listening logs, which included important information about listening process and practice. Third, as the students' listening proficiency increased at the end of the semester, it was found that introducing listening logs along with classroom lessons helped the students improve their listening ability. Finally, the high proficiency group students used multiple strategies simultaneously, regardless of the type of listening strategies, while the low proficiency group students used one or two limited listening strategies. However, the low proficiency group students may have had trouble expressing their ideas in English or recognizing the listening strategies they used, not because they did not use a lot of listening strategies. Therefore, teachers should regularly check if students are following their instructions and help them use appropriate strategies for better understanding.

  • Worldwide, air transport demand of this century is expanding rapidly, and each countries' demand is also increasing. Thus a number of low-cost carriers emerged in existing air transportation business sector and airman qualification check work regarding aviation safety management is increasing too. As the remedy for the result of aviation safety audit by ICAO and FAA in 2001 that governmental activity for aviation safety had been performed by a small number of aviation safety inspectors, airman qualification inspection system implemented by airlines was improved and the government has established the system that authorized airman qualification inspectors check airmen qualification with airlines according to the international trend. This study suggests the need of improvement of airman qualification inspection system that existing inspection system as the means of safety management can be transferred to Operations Safety Inspection(OSI) activity which is compliant with international standards.

  • 119 구급대를 이용하여 급성관상동맥증후군을 진단 받은 97명의 환자평가로는 혈압 27.8%, 호흡 23.7%, 맥박 33.0%를 측정하였고, 응급처치로는 산소공급 52.6%, 안정 12.4%, 심전도 체크 4.1%, Nitroglycerin(NTG) Aspirin 정맥로 확보 둥은 0%로 전체적인 수행율이 낮게 확인되어 급성관상동맥증후군 환자의 병원 전 처치가 제대로 이루어지지 못하고 있다. 따라서 구급대인의 질적 향상을 위해서 실무중심의 지속적인 교육, 교육 후에는 반드시 평가를 병행하여 적정수준 미달자에게는 재교육을 받도록 하는 등 구급대원의 자질을 강화시킬 수 있도록 내부적인 초안이 마련되어야 할 것이다.

민간 조종사 전환과정 중 업무안배 능력 향상을 위한 조종역량 요인 분석연구 (A Study on the Determinants of Pilot Competency to Improve Work Management in the Civilian Pilot Transition Course)

  • 조종사의 역할은 항공사의 안전에 절대적으로 중요하다. 초기 비행훈련 단계에서 군과 민간 출신별 실제 비행에 필요한 조종사 역량 습득에 차이가 있는지를 확인하기 위해, 본 연구에서는 배경별 교육훈련의 진행상황과 효과를 분석하여 차별화된 역량기반 교육을 연구하고자 한다. 특히, 업무안배 능력은 다른 조종역량에 대한 이해가 바탕이 되어야 하여, 타 조종역량이 업무안배에 미치는 효과를 분석하여 교육 방안을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해 군과 민간 출신에 따라 ICAO가 정의한 8개 역량 중 정기 숙련도 점검 결과에 차이가 있는지 여부를 판단하며, 군과 민간 출신의 평균 차이 및 두 집단의 업무안배에 미치는 조종역량 요인을 분석하였다. 분석결과 업무안배에 미치는 요인으로서 의사소통 능력과 상황인식 능력이 중요한 요인으로 분석되었으며, 군출신의 경우는 상황인식 능력이 뛰어날수록 업무안배 능력이 높은 것으로 나타나는 반면, 민간출신의 경우 의사소통 능력이 뛰어날수록 업무안배 능력이 높아지는 것으로 나타남에 따라 업무안배 교육에 출신에 따른 차별화된 교육이 필요한 것으로 나타났다.

한국어능력시험 고급 쓰기 문항 연구 (A Study on High-Level Essay Writing Questions in TOPIK)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether high-level(level 6) essay-writing questions in Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) have been presented appropriately so as to enable foreign test-takers to display their Korean writing ability properly, and to provide some suggestions on how those questions need to be changed. To accomplish this purpose, all the essay-writing questions were collected from the 33 TOPIK tests, from the 2nd in 1998 to the 35thin 2014, and analyzed from the perspectives of their topics and formats. The results are that high-level TOPIK essay-writing questions showed a strong tendency to take as their topics Korean sociocultural structures and phenomena, or current issues in Korea, and that they frequently employed guided writing formats by providing preset ideas or/and contexts for test-takers to write in a guided way; such tendencies were analyzed to shed a negative influence on test-takers displaying their writing ability and creativity, because those topics and preset ideas or contexts provided do not allow them to express their own opinions or positions freely. It is suggested that TOPIK essay-writing questions should be changed to deal with objective and general topics which enable test-takers to write freely and logically in Korean based on their experience, because TOPIK is not a test to check whether they have enough background knowledge about the Korean society and culture, but a test to assess their Korean proficiency.

The effects of pause in English speaking evaluation

  • The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of utterance internal pause in English speaking evaluation. To avoid possible confusion with other errors caused by segmental and prosodic inaccuracy, stem utterances with two different length obtained from a native speaker were manipulated to make a set of stimuli tokens through insertion of pauses whose length and position vary. After a total of 90 participants classified into three proficiency groups rated the stimuli, the scored data set was statistically analyzed in terms of the mixed effects model. It was confirmed that predictors such as pause length, pause position and utterance length significantly influence raters' evaluation scores. Especially, a dominating effect was found in such a way that raters gradually deducted scores in accordance with the increase of pause duration. In another experiment, a tree-based statistical learning technique was utilized to check which of the significant predictors played a more influential role than others. The findings in this paper are expected to be practically informative for both the test takers who are preparing for an English speaking test and the raters who desire to develop more objective rubric of speaking evaluation.

Comparison of Antenna Parameters of R-/S-Band Standard Gain Horn Antennas

  • A comparison of the antenna parameters for R-band (1.7-2.6 GHz) and S-band (2.6-3.95 GHz) standard gain horn antennas has been performed by the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), together with seven domestic participants from private companies and public institutions. Its purpose, as a proficiency test program of the 'Antenna Measurement Club' of KRISS, was to check equivalences in antenna parameter measurements between KRISS and the participants, particularly in the R-/S-band, to support antenna manufacturers and end users in Korea. The measurement parameters of this comparison are the power gain, radiation pattern, and reflection coefficient of the traveling standards for R-/S-band pyramidal standard gain horn antennas. The comparison used a gain comparison method and an extrapolation method to measure the power gain of the two traveling standards; the radiation patterns were measured in the far-field region of the transmitting and receiving antennas.

Benzo[a]pyrene 분석용 토양 숙련도 표준시료 개발에 관한 연구 - 후보 표준물질의 인증을 위한 균질성, 안정성 평가를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Development of Soil-based PTMs for Analysis of Benzo[a]pyrene - Focusing on the Evaluation of Homogeneity and Stability for the Certification of Benzo[a]pyrenecandidate Reference Materials -)

  • This study was implemented as a part of the experiment to develop two kinds of soil-based Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) proficiency testing materials (PTMs) for soil analysis. A test was carried out for the check of solubility of the reference material (high purity reagent) using several solvents. Another test was also conducted for the evaluation of homogeneity and stability of two kinds of candidate soil reference materials. The test analysis of BaP in terms of the candidate materials was conducted according to the Standard Soil Analytical Methods by Ministry of Environment. Dissolution of the reference material was shown to vary depending on solvent type and was higher in the order of Dichloromethane > Acetone > Acetone/MeOH (9 : 1) > N-hexane. In addition, the slope on calibration curve for BaP standard solutions was largest on BaP standard solutions prepared with dichloromethane of the tested solvents. Such tendency appeared egually in the commercial BaP standard solution. Therefore, it is thought to be reasonable to use dichloromethane as the solvent in case of the standard stock solution that is used for the measurement of BaP concentration in soil. ISO 13528 and IUPAC protocol were used for verification of homogeneity on the two kinds of soil candidate materials, Both candidate materials were sufficiently homogeneous. Stability assessment of the two candidate materials was made according to ISO Guide 35 and the result showed that both batches did not have any long-term and short term stability issues that might occur during shipping. However, monitoring results of BaP concentration in soil showed that BaP concentration of the two batches measured at 15 days after the sample preparation was reduced by about 24~37% compared with that of the samples measured on 0 day of the sample preparation. Identification was done with several treatments such as irradiation and sterilization etc. The major cause was shown to be irradiation to the samples.

자작문제 발표방식이 수학과 학력신장에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of the Presentation of Self-Made Problems on the Enhancement of Scholastic Achievement in Mathematics and Logicial Thinking)

  • The purpose of this study is to check out whether the method that students make problems and anouence them to both students and teacher in the next class influence on the students' intersts, attitudes, logical thinking ability and lerning achievement in mathematics. The following is the experimental design and procedure. First, the author divided students into two groups. One is the experimental group and the other is the control group. These two groups' students consist of the advanced level, the intermediate level and the elementary level according to the students' learning proficiency Second, the author used the different teaching method between the experimental group and the control group. The author gave the experimental group's students the learning assignment problems according to their three levels and made students present the problems to the instructor and classmates in the next class. On the other hand, the author gave the control group's students learning assignment problems according to their three levels, and made them only submit their assingment to the instructor. The results of this study are as follows : 1)The method of solving and presenting the self-made problems on the basis of the informations to solve the given preceding model learning problems according to students' levels made students' learning attitudes more positive even though the method couldn't enhance the students' interests in mathematics. 2)The method of solving and presenting the self-made problems was effective to improve the logical thinking ability for especially the intermediate level's students among the three levels. In addition, the intermediate level's students showed great positive changes in their improvements of the learning achievment. It is assumed that this result is caused by two major factors(reasons). One is students' confidence that they can solve the fundamental problems without difficulty. And the other is students' desire to solve the problems of the intermediate level or more advanced level.

스포츠조종사 자격증명의 국내 적용에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Legal Application for Sport Pilot Certificate in Korea)

  • In september 2004, a new pilot certificate scheme referred to as Sport Pilot Certificate was declared official and standardized in the US. The designation of Light-sport aircraft and the details of the relevant pilot certificate policy was announced out of the perception that a new regulation is required to be applied whereby the limitations on the manufacturing process enhancements and current aviation rules are considered the triggering factors. US Federal Aviation Regulation retains a comprehensive range of airworthiness certificates and aircrafts are managed systematically in accordance with FAR 21, 103. The airworthiness are further segregated into sub categories, which allows differentiated management. Korean Aviation Law classify aircraft into five different categories and powered air vehicle that weighs more than 150kg(19liters fuel capacity) for one seat, 225kg for two seats(38liters fuel capacity) while the systems that fall under a specific mass threshold level are known as ultralight vehicle. The research discusses the policy of the sport pilot certificate and the light-sport aircraft ratings announced official by the Federal Aviation Administration in an intuitive fashion with the analysis of the operations providing the evidence as to the viability of adopting the policy in local grounds. Based on the findings, the report discusses the case for introducing the light-sport aircraft and make recommendation on a strategy of applying the policy in Korea with respect to the pilot certificates, safety agenda, and the written test for the pilot certificate, and operating efficiency.
