  • The economic crisis in North Korea has reduced its capacity to invest in the energy industries. The country is going through a vicious cycle of decreased investment in the energy industries and reduced energy production. This suggests that the energy industries would come to the top priority of investment once the economy improves. This paper calculated the economic ripple effect of the investment on North and South Korean economies based on the assumption that 390 billion won was invested in the construction of a natural gas combined-cycle power plant in Gaesong Industrial Complex. In order to analyze the economic ripple effect of the investment on North Korean economy, we constructed the inter-industry relation table of North Korea for year 2014 and used the input-output model. The ripple effect of the investment in the natural gas industry turned out to be 1.012 billion dollars. In order to analyze the effect of the investment on South Korean economy, we constructed the inter-industry relation table of South Korea for year 2013 and used the demand-driven model for inter-industry analysis. As a result, production, added-value and employment inducement coefficients of the investment in the natural gas industry were calculated as 2.02073, 0.62697 and 8.99409 respectively.

  • Farm land is considered the most important production factor in farm production. Land is not only one of the most scarce resource but also the size of land holding is the key factor in determining the size of farm income in Korea. To increase farm productivity by accepting bio-chemical and mechnical technology, the qualitative improvement of farm land through land consolidation and on-farm development have been carried out by the Korean government. Land consolidation with water resource development makes possible the high-tech-capital intensive farming, internal expansion of farm land and hightening the rate of land intensity in connection with UR problems. This paper contained the present status of farm land base development, allocation of investment by types of farm land development and the econome-trical analysis on the effects of the investment on rice productivity during the past 27 years since 1965. The rate of irrigated paddy area had been increased from 42% in 1965 to 74% in 1991. Land consolidated area out of the total paddy area had been achieved 44.9% and the improved rate of poor drained paddy area was shown 43.5% in 1991. To carry out the above farm land base development projects, the government had procured financial budgets consisting of the G't subsidy, long term loan, foreign loan, the provincial G't subsidy, WFP counter fund and farmer's burden.

  • In today's uncertain economic environment, the evaluation of safety for investment alternatives is of practical importance in manufacturing companies. This paper examines a method of quantitatively evaluating profitability and risk for multiple alternatives using the total-cost unit-cost domain. The paper assumes such factors as unit sales price, sales and production volume, unit variable cost, fixed cost, and yield for each alternative. The paper incorporates the relationship between production capacity and demand, distinguishing between cases of production capacity surplus and shortage for each year over the entire planning horizon. The paper investigates the case in which the values of each factor independently move in the direction of decreasing profit each year, and clarifies the procedure of comparing safety among multiple investment alternatives on a single consolidated total-cost unit-cost domain. The difficulty of the problem lies in the method of consolidating multiple total-cost unit-cost domains into a single domain since the combination of years of capacity surplus and shortage depends upon the change values in each factor under consideration. A systematic method of evaluating profitability as well as risk is presented, and the validity of the proposed method is verified using a numerical example.

  • This study found that introduction of environmental systems and increased environmental investment have a major impact on K company's sustainable development. The analysis indicated that the environmental investment variable has a close relationship with production quantity, sales, and the amount of sludge treatment variables in K company. However, all other variables including the cost of disinfection chemicals, and the expenditure of sludge treatment have no relationship with the environmental investment variable. Additionally, short-term results show that the company's environmental expenditure variable is conversely related with the environmental performance variable.

  • In this paper, we present a case study of a new emerging business startup involved in smart house appliances. The irreversible investment concept and real-option theory are introduced as the fundamentals of the model. By using games theory we show that the startup's actions can trigger reactions from other firms. The first part covers initial the research and development stage, while the second part covers production and commercialization. The findings of this study suggest that, given a certain amount of initial investment, an open and shared innovation may lead to hurting a firm's investment while strengthening the competitors' position in the market. However, given the sensitivity analysis, when volatility and demand grow favorably, sharing R&D investment is not a bad option for a new player to adjust its position in the market while still maintaining positive returns.

  • Authorities of the major industrialized countries infer that technological advances have a greater contribution to economic growth compared to traditional factors of production such as labor and capital and are actively pursuing investment in research and development. We have examined quantitatively the effect of R & D investment on exports in the IT sector in this study. Based on that results, how much of R & D investment in the IT sector should be made in order to reach trade surplus of two trillion dollars, which Korea government has aimed in 2020, is also to be analyzed.

  • Overseas direct investment is constantly on the rise, while domestic investment has been slowing and has led to concerns that the expansion of overseas investment may be weakening domestic investment. Considering the change of environment as economic growth, this paper analyzes the relationship between domestic and overseas investment using a regression tree. The result shows that overseas investment substituted domestic investment in the past (before 1985); however, they compensated for each other during the rapid growth period based on exports (1986-1997). The relationship turns out to be insignificant after the Asian currency crisis(after 1998). In addition, this paper also examines the factors determining domestic facilities investment and overseas direct investment at each stage of the changes in their influence due to globalization. Taking into account the results, we need to re-evaluate the current pattern of corporate investment apart from the past restricted point of view to help domestic enterprises efficiently utilize the international production network and resources.
