  • In this paper, we present a Web-enabled product data sharing system for the support of RPD (Rapid Product Development) process by incorporating STEP (STandard for the Exchange of Product model data) with Web technology such as VRML (Virtual Reality Markup Language), SGML (Structured Generalized Markup Language) and Java. Extreme competition makes product life cycle short by incessantly deprecating current products with a brand-new one, and thus urges enterprises to devise a new product faster than ever. In this environment, an RPD process with effective product data sharing system is essential to outstrip competitors by speeding up the development process. However, the diversity of product data schema and heterogeneous systems make it difficult to exchange the product data. We chose STEP as a neutral product data schema and Web as an independent exchange environment to overcome these problems. While implementing our system, we focused on the support of STEP AP 203 UoF (Units of Functionality) views to efficiently employ STEP data models that are maximally normalized, and therefore very cumbersome to handle. Our functionality-oriented UoF view approach can increase users'appreciation since it facilitates the modular usage of STEP data models. This can also enhance the accuracy of product data. We demonstrate that our view approach is applicable to the configuration control of mechanical assemblies.

  • The product data exchange between heterogeneous CAB and PDM systems is a crucial issue for the integration of product development systems. STEP offers an efficient mechanism of product data exchange between heterogeneous systems. This paper introduces a UML-based mapping methodology for the product data models. The suggested mapping method has been applied to exchange the product structure data between CAD and PDM systems. Based on the STEP methods, we developed an interface module between a CAD system and a PDM system.

  • CAD systems have been developed with network technology and it is needed to exchange product data among them. STEP becomes world-wide international standard to exchange CAD data among various heterogeneous CAD systems in manufacturing industrial fields. We report results to test errors that can happen when exchanging STEP files of product model through the STEP translator of different commercial CAD systems. Also the tests of Korean Character, Hangul, have been carried out. And also we report the STEP rallies held twice in Korea and several rounds abroad, and their testing results are shown as tables and graphs. The tested results can be used for exchanging product models to the next domestic STEP Rally and extended to Northeastem Asian STEP rally by steadily contacting with the organizations for Asian STEP centers such as JSTEP(Japan) and CSTEP(China). Finally we expect that the result can be used to specify STEP standardization in the field of managing product data.

  • This research proposes an Integrated Product Information Model (IPIM) using STEP (Standard for the Exchange of product model data) for Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) of Concurrent Engineering (CE). IPIM is based on Geometry and Topology (STEP Part 42), Form Feature (STEP Part 48), and Tolerance (STEP Part 48) for representing the integrated information of mechanical parts. For the IPIM, 1) new entities are developed for integration of existing entities, and 2) the existing entities are restructured and modified for a special application protocol. In CIM or CE, the advantages of using IPIM having integrated form of geometry, feature and tolerance are 1) integration of product design, process design and manufacturing sequentially or concurrently. 2) keep the product data consistency, modified by different domain, and 3) automatic data exchange between different application software and different hardware. The prototype system is composed of CAD, Data Probe, DBMS and SDAI (Standard Data Access Interface), and the generated STEP data is stored in a step file of DBMS for other applications.

  • Even though we have greater chances to accomplish successful collaborative design by utilizing recent proliferation of networks, current practices do not fully take advantage of the information infrastructure. There are so much data over the networks, but not enough knowledge about the data is available to users. The main objectives of the product data interface system proposed in this paper are to capture more knowledge on managing product data and to provide users effective search capability. We define the metadata model for product data defined in STEP AP 203 and manage the metadata from product data in a repository system. Because we utilize the standard formats such as STEP for product data and RDF for metadata, the proposed approach can be applied to various fields of industries independently on commercial products.

  • ㆍ STEP is an International Standard (ISO 10303) - that defines the methodology to create computer interpretable product data models. ㆍ STEP Implementation - allows exchange and sharing of product data while retaining semantics throughout the product life cycle. ' STEP is in deployment - PDM data exchange at Boeing and others - Geometry data exchange at GM and others ㆍ The STEP community overcomes obstacles - “They will never finish the standard” (done 1994) - “They will never be able to transfer solids” (done 1995) - “They will never make solids transfer reliable” (done 1997) - “They will never implement all those Application Protocols”(TBD)(omitted)

  • Life cycle product data is very important yet difficult to handle for manufacturing companies. Shoring and exchanging product data over world-wide-web is a part of key technology to implement PDM or CALS. STEP is widely accepted as a standard to represent the life-cycle product model data. Described in this paper is a web browser plug-in that can graphically display and explore product data represented by STEP over internet. By the use of the plug-in (named "npSTEP"), a product model data stored in STEP format on a web server can be displayed on a commonly used web client (browser), such as Netscape navigator, without any format conversion process. Furthermore one can explore the components or attributes of the product model data in hierarchical manner.

  • An information sharing system, namely World Design View, is developed for browsing product design data on the World Wide Web environment. For the last few years information sharing has been rapidly emerging as an important research issue in the areas of concurrent engineering, product data management, virtual manufacturing, and so on. Since we are mainly concerned with product development, the key information that needs be communicated and shared is product data. The developed system puts the major advantages of STEP, OODB, and VRML together. The STEP standard provides a consistent data exchange format and application interfaces among different CAD/CAM systems. OODB is efficient and effective in dealing with complex data structures often found in engineering applications. Virtual worlds for 3-D product models can be created by VRML which is networked via the global Internet and hyperlinked with WWW. The World Design View system can support for members of virtual design teams, possibly distributed all over the world, to share 3-D shape information quickly and easily.

  • This paper addresses the issues related to the development of product model and applications fer nuclear power plants based on STEP and PLIB standards. The ISO standards which can be applied are; STEP(Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data) AP(application protocol) 221/231, AP 230/225, AP 227, ISO 13584 PLIB, ISO 15926 RDL. The data models of the AP's and ISO 15926 RDL are reviewed and an application system is proposed to exchange and share the design data of the nuclear power plant.

  • The objective of STEP is to provide neutral mechanism capable of describing product data through the life cycle of a product, independent form any particular systems. This paper describes an STEP application program that can display the three-dimensional shape based on b-spline surface and the data which defines configuration of the product. The developed program is based on the STEP part 203 “Configuration controlled design”.
