  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of space fabric type air insole pressure differences on young adults' dynamic balance ability. Method: The subjects of this study were 17 young female adults without musculoskeletal system disease. Balance ability was measured by dividing the subjects into three groups: an experimental group which did not wear an air insole (insole-off group), an experimental group which wore an air insole to which air pressure of $0.55kg/cm^2$ was applied (insole-0.55 group), and an experimental group which wore an air insole to which air pressure of $0.75kg/cm^2$ was applied (insole-0.75 group). For dynamic balance, the subjects stood on a balance pad, and perimeter length and medium speed were measured three times. The averaged values were recorded and statistically processed. Result: There were significant differences in average speed, and the insole-0.75 group's average speed decreased compared to the insole-off group and the insole-0.55 group. Although the total movement distance did not statistically differ, the insole-75 group's movement distance decreased compared to the insole-off group and the insole-0.55 group. Conclusion: Application of a space fabric type air insole, in particular insole-0.75, was helpful in improving balance ability. This is considered to occur because the space fabric structure was conducive to decreasing sway and producing balance.

  • Verotoxin non-producing E coli O157 strains have been isolated from cattle feces and compared in particular regard to biochemical properties and genotypes with verotoxin-producing E coli (VTEC). E coli O157 : nonH7 strains had different phenotypes in sorbitol fermentation and ${\beta}-glucuronidase$ activity from E coli O157 : H7. Regardless of verotoxin production ability of E coli O157 : H7, uidA gene was uniquely detected from sorbitol and ${\beta}-glucuronidase$ negative E coli O157 : H7. Forty five fecal samples from 6 dairy farms were obtained and VTEC was detected as 15.6% (7 strains) of the samples. Most VTEC isolates were positive for sorbitol fermentation and ${\beta}-glucuronidase$ activity but negative for eaeA gene. This study suggested that cattle could be a reservior for VTEC. However, absence of eaeA gene in VTEC isolates from most of healthy cattle suggested that they might be less virulent than eaeA-positive E coli against human health.

  • The growth inhibition of enteropathogenic Escheriohia coli $A_2$and Escherichia coli G$_7$, causing the diarrhea in piglets, by the organic acid producing bacteria was studied in vitro. The metabolites of the organic acid bacteria, such as lactic acid, acetic acid inhibited the growth of E. coli $A_2$and E. coli G$_7$ in BL medium. The more the organic acid producing bacteria have ability to produce the organic acids, the higher these bacteria excelled the inhibitory efficacy against enteropathogenic E. coli. Among the strains examined, Lactobacillus casei Y and Streptococcus faecium C showed relatively strong growth inhibition against enteropathogenic E. coli.. When the organic acid producing bacteria and the enteropathogenic E. coli were incubated simultaneously in BL medium, bacteriostasis of E. coli was observed when the pH of BL culture was lowered to 5.0, and bacteriocidal effect was observed when the pH became Bess than 4.5, E. coli. $A_2$was more resistant to the organic acid bacteria than E. coli G$_7$.

  • The patulin producing capicity of Penicillium crustosum, an isolate from Korean apple, in various broth culture media, was investigated, and compared with patulin production by the standard strain P. griseofulvum(ATCC 46037). The maximal patulin production capacity of the P. griseofulvum ATCC 46037 was 2,029-2,829 ppm in 5-GYEP, SY and MEB broth media. The patulin-producing capacity of the isolated fungus(P. crustosum) attained 2,794 ppm in a 5-GYEP broth medium, but was only 324 and 11 ppm in SY and MEB media, respectively. There were no significant correlations between mycelial growth levels and patulin-producing ability in either P. crustosum or P. griseofulvum. The patulin production of P. griseofulvum was induced in the wide pH range of pH 3.0-11.0, while that of P. crustosum was induced in the acidic pH range pH 3.0-5.0. Patulin production levels were dependent on the carbon sources in the media and maximal patulin production by P. griseofulvum and P. crustosum was observed in media containing glycerol and fructose, respectively.

  • In this study, a total of more than 1,000 bacteria, including 739 species of aerobic bacteria, 80 species of urease producing bacteria and 303 species of photosynthetic bacteria, were isolated from red-pepper field soils located in the Gyeongsan Province of the Republic of Korea. Amongst these, 158 species of aerobic bacteria, 70 species of urease producing bacteria and 228 species of photosynthetic bacteria were found to be auxin producing soil bacteria through quantification analysis with the Salkowski test. The latter groupings were then tested for antifungal activities to ${\beta}$-Glucanase and siderophore using CMC congo red agar and CAS blue agar media. In addition, the selected strains were examined for antifungal activity against various phytopathogenic fungi on PDN agar media. Six strains; BCB14, BCB17, C10, HA46, HA143, and HJ5, were noted for their ability to both produce auxin and act as antifungal substances. 16S rDNA sequence comparison analyses of these six strains identified them as Bacillus subtilis BCB14, B. methylotrophicus BCB17, B. methylotrophicus C10, B. sonorensis HA46, B. subtilis HA143, and B. safensis HJ5.

  • Yellow mutants of the astaxanthin producing red yeast Phaffia rhodozyma were obtained by nitrosoguanidine mutagenesis. The carotenoid composition of the yelow mutants, Yan-1 and Ny-1, was mainly $\beta$ -carotene (> 95$%$) and torulene (< 5$$). Therefore, the yellow mutants are carotene oxygenation deficient mutants (CODMs). CODMs produced decreased quantities of carotenoids compared to their red parents and this indicated that carotene may regulate its synthesis. CODMs, Yan-1 and Ny-4, on plates containing 50 $\mu$ M antimycin, showed highly pigmented vertical papillae. Antimycin-induced mutants purified from the papillae showed increases in carotenoid content (up to 1 mg $\beta$-carotene/g yeast). CODMs, Yan-1 and Ay-1, were more sensitive to antimycin than red strains, Ant-1 and 67-385. This was probably due to lower antioxidant activity of $\beta$-carotene than that of astaxanthin. Light increased torulene and light+antimycin further increased the torulene. Yan-1 and Ny-4 could grow with succinate, though their red parents, Ant-1 and Anf-1p, could not. However, antimycin induced mutation of Yan-1 or Ny-4 destroyed the ability to grow with succinate.

  • Microbial cellulose has many potential applications due to its excellent physical properties. The production of cellulose from Acetobacter xylinum in submerged culture is, however, beset with numerous problems. The most difficult one has been the appearance of negative mutants under shaking culture conditions, which is deficient of cellulose producing ability. Thus genetic instability of Acetobacter xylinum under shaking culture condition made developing a stable mutant major research interest in recent years. To find a proper type of bioreactor for the production of microbial cellulose, several production systems were developed. Using a reactor system with planar type impeller with bottoms sparging system, it was possible to produce 5 g/L microbial cellulose without generating cellulose minus mutants, which is comparable to that of static culture system.

  • Shape Memory Alloy(SMA) actuators, which have the ability to return to a predetermined shape when heated, have many potential applications such as aeronautics, surgical tools, robotics and so on. Although the conventional PID controller can be used with slow response systems, there has been limited success in precise motion control of SMA actuators, since the systems are disturbed by unknown factors beside their inherent nonlinear hysteresis and changes in the surrounding environment of the systems. This paper presents a new development of a SMA position control system by using a self-tuning fuzzy PID controller. This control algorithm is used by tuning the parameters of the PID controller thereby integrating fuzzy inference and producing a fuzzy adaptive PID controller, which can then be used to improve the control performance of nonlinear systems. The experimental results of position control of SMA actuators using conventional and self-tuning fuzzy PID controllers are both included in this paper.

  • An actinomycetes, KT-10 isolated from ginseng field in Kyongpook, Korea was selected based on its ability to produce a lysosomal cathepsin B inhibitor. The inhibitor purified from the culture supernatant of the isolate KT-10 showed strong inhibitory effects against cathepsin B as well as against papain when the activities were measured using synthetic substrate, ${\alpha}$-N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-Iysine p-nitrophenyl ester (CLN) or ${\alpha}$-N-benzoyl-D,L-arginine 2-naphthylamide (BANA). The isolate KT-10 was identified as a species of Streptomyces based on its morphological characteristics and chemotaxonomic data. The TAXON program of Ward was used to identify Streptomyces sp. KT-10 as a strain of Streptomyces luteogriseus belong to cluster 18 of the genus Streptomyces with a Willcox probability 0.999388. The cathepsin B inhibitor was presumed to a novel material composed of a polyhydroxylamine.

  • S-Adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) is an important metabolic intermediate in living organisms and participates in many reactions as a methyl group donor. SAM has been used as a dietary supplement and is proposed to have beneficial effects on the liver and brain. The aim of this study was to find lactic acid bacteria with high SAM-producing ability to be used as SAM enhancing probiotics. We used high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to quantify the amount of SAM produced, and found that Bifidobacterium bifidum BGN4 produced a significantly higher amount of SAM than other Bifidobacterium or Lactobacillus strains. The effect of various carbon and nitrogen sources on SAM production was examined. This study confirmed that Bifidobacterium may be utilized as a source of SAM in the functional food industry.
