  • The job shop scheduling problem has been a major target for many researchers. And, most of the past studies did not consider setup time. In many cases of real manufacturing environment, however, there exists a setup time for each operations. The setup can be divide into two parts, one can be done after job arrival. The setup time based on the latter can be summed together with processing time, but that based on the former can not be. We propose an approximation method based on shifting bottleneck procedure for solving the job shop scheduling problem with sequence independent setup time. It schedules the machines one by one, taking a bottleneck machine among the machines not yet scheduled. Every time after a new machine is scheduled, all schedules previously established are updated. Both the bottlenck search and the schedule updating procedure are based on solving a single machine scheduling problem with ready time, setup time and delivery time iteratively.

  • The Enriched Free Mesh Method (EFMM) is a patch-wise procedure in which both a displacement field on an element and a stress/strain field on a cluster of elements connected to a node can be defined. On the other hand, the Superconvergent Patch Recovery (SPR) is known to be an efficient post-processing procedure of the finite element method to estimate the error norm at a node. In this paper, we discuss the relationship between solutions of the EFMM and those of the SPR through several convergence studies. In addition, in order to solve the demerit of the smoothing effect on the fracture mechanics fields, we implement a singular stress field to a local patch in the EFMM, and its effectiveness is investigated.

  • For the past decades, advances in computational devices have propelled mathematical modeling to become an effective tool for solving the black box of complex biological systems because of its prominent analytical power and comprehensive insight. Nevertheless, modeling is still limitedly used in the fields of agriculture and food which generally concentrate on producing experimental data rather than processing them. This study, hence, intends to introduce modeling in terms of its procedure types of structure, formulation, analyses, and software, with reviews of current notable studies from micro to macro scales so as to propose the modeling technique as a novel approach in discerning conundrums in agriculture and food systems. We expect this review to provide an eligible source for researchers who are willing to apply modeling techniques into the unexplored fields related to bio-systems that comprehensively include biology, nutrition, agriculture, food, animal science, and ecology.

  • We consider the customer order scheduling problem with job capacity restriction where the number of jobs in the shop at the same time is fixed. In the customer order scheduling problem, each job is part of some batch (customer order) and the composition of the jobs (product) in the batch is pre-specified. The objective function is associated with the completion time of the batches instead of the completion time of the jobs. We first summarize the known results for the general customer order scheduling problems. Then, we establish some new properties for the problems with job capacity restriction. For the case of unit processing time with the objective of minimizing makespan, we develop a polynomial-time optimal procedure for the two machine case. For the same problem with a variation of no batch alternation, we also develop a polynomial-time optimal procedure. Then, we show that the problems with the objectives of minimizing makespan and minimizing average batch completion time become NP-hard when there exist arbitrary number of machines. Finally, We propose optimal solution procedures for some special cases.

  • A thinning algorithm -based image analysis technique was developed to measure corn root lengths. The root length measurement method was evaluated by comparing thread lengths measured by the image analysis system with actual thread lengths. The length measurement method accurately estimated actual thread lengths (less than 2% calculated error). Also, a rapid root length density measurement procedure, which utilizes the above root length measurement method, was developed to estimate corn root length density without washing the roots. Root length densities estimated from the cut soil surface of core samples taken from the field were paired with the root length densities determined from washed roots from the same soil core sample. A linear relationship between these two values was expected and was found. Eliminating the root washing procedure reduces the time required for measuring corn root length density substantially.

  • In this paper, in other to analyze the performance of efficient key distribution protocol, we evaluate the key distribution processing method of push model like the Kerberos and pull model such as X.9.17 used in wired network. Also, we evaluate the procedure of key distribution protocol in satellite network. Besides, we analyze the performance of key distribution protocol procedure in view of delay and throughput in the case that key distribution protocol is processed based on Inband/Outband channel.

  • This paper introduces a prosodic phrasing method in Korean to improve the naturalness of speech synthesis, especially in text-to-speech conversion. In prosodic phrasing, it is necessary to understand the structure of a sentence through a language processing procedure, such as part-of-speech (POS) tagging and parsing, since syntactic structure correlates better with the prosodic structure of speech than with other factors. In this paper, the prosodic phrasing procedure is treated from two perspectives: dependency parsing and prosodic phrasing using dependency relations. This is appropriate for Ural-Altaic, since a prosodic boundary in speech usually concurs with a governor of dependency relation. From experimental results, using the proposed method achieved 12% improvement in prosody boundary prediction accuracy with a speech corpus consisting 300 sentences uttered by 3 speakers.

  • Parallel procedure and performance of two-step Eulerian code have not been reported sufficiently yet even though it was developed and utilized widely in the impact simulation. In this study, parallel strategy of two-step Eulerian code was proposed and described in detail. The performance was evaluated in the self-made linux cluster computer. Compared with commercial code, a relatively good performance is achieved. Through the performance evaluation of each computation stage, remap is turned out to be the most time consuming part among the other part such as FE processing, communication, time marching etc.

  • In order to improve trial-and-error based conventional practices for optimizing forming processes, a direct design method to guide iterative design practices, called the ideal forming theory, has been previously developed. In the theory, material elements are required to deform following the minimum Plastic work Path. The theory can be used to determine the ideal initial blank shape needed to best achieve a specified final shape while resulting in optimum strain distributions. In this work, the direct design method based on the ideal forming theory was applied to design initial design shape for VCR deck chassis. Based on the solution of the ideal forming theory, FEM analysis was utilized to evaluate an optimum blank shape to be formed without tearing. Simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data. It was shown that the proposed sequential design procedure based on direct design method and FEM can be successfully applied to optimize the die design Procedure of sheet metal forming processes.

  • Many new radar techniques have appeared on the electronic scene in recent years, such as a variety of automatic computer processing. However, even with the advent of these sophisticated radar techniques, an old problem continues to plague all radars: the problem of transmission line losses. With the higher performance required today, the Waveguide testing and trouble-shooting techniques remain essentially unchanged in principle. This paper dealt with the rf pulse "Time-domain Reflectometry" to inspect radar wave-guide system and compared with the conventional methods. During the investigation, it was verified that the pulsed TDR for wave-guide is superior to the conventional methods; 1. Disassembling is not needed to locate the discontinity points and measure the reflections of trobled points. 2. The results of the data are more precise. 3. The condition of individual component is able to the photographed and recorded permanently. 4. Since rf pulse TDR is based on the well-known basic radar principle, such a test set requires the minimum of training to operate. With the level of transmission line problems, the prospect of increasing complexity of equipment, and no relief in sight, the benifits must be emphasizied to adopt such a testing procedure.procedure.
