  • In a diesel engine, air-fuel mixture formation and ignition delay period have great influence on the performance of engine. Their main factors are combustion chamber shape, fuel injection system. air volume, air flow and so on. So, the combustion process in the cylinder is complex because of many factors which have direct and indirect effects on it. In this study, we take into consideration of scavenging pressure and scavenging temperature that are hewn as the main factor to the combustion process of two-stroke D.1. diesel engine. It is taken a picture of the combustion flame process for combustion chamber of re-entrant type and cylindrical type. So, it is applied to the basis data of combustion chamber design from an image analysis.

  • The paper is concerned with the process design and the die design for manufacturing the preform of a large pressure vessel. The cold-working processes are introduced to improve the fatigue strength and to simplify the manufacturing process. By the finite element simulation, the parameter design is carried out, which is subjected to constraints such as the blank sire, press capacity and other minor limitations. The proposed design results are verified by the model experiments, in which the model is scaled down to one tenth of the original size.

  • Carbon nanotubes(CNTs) are expected to be ideal reinforcements of metal matrix composite materials used in aircraft and sports industries due to their high strength and low density. In this study, a high pressure torsion(HPT) process at an elevated temperature(473K) was employed to achieve both powder consolidation and grain refinement of aluminummatrix nanocomposites reinforced by 5vol% CNTs. CNT/Al nanocomposite powders were fabricated using a novel molecular-level mixing process to enhance the interface bonding between the CNTs and metal matrix before the HPT process. The HPT processed disks were composed of mostly equilibrium grain boundaries. The CNT-reinforced ultrafine grained microstructural features resulted in high strength and good ductility.

  • In order to investigate the influences of process parameters on the shape of lead frame, experimental study has been carried out. In the experiment, dimensional accuracy of the die sets, measurement accuracy has been managed carefully enough to simulate actual lead frame blanking process. With the blanking of square-shaped specimen, the effects of clearance, strip holding pressure and bridge width on the shape of blanked profile have been investigated. Experimental results show that the burnish ratio is increased as the clearance decreases. the strip holding pressure increases, and bridge width increases. Although the results seems to be similar to the ordinary blanking, the lead frame blanking shows a subtle different characteristics to the ordinary blanking due to the narrow bridge width.

  • As important mechanical elements, gears have been used widely in power transferring systems such as automobile transmission and there have been several researches trying to make gear parts with cold or warm forging in order to reduce cost and time required to gear manufacturing process. Although forging processes of spur and bevel gears have been developed as practical level owing to active previous researches in Korea, the manufacturing of helical gear has been still depended on traditional gear cutting processes such as hobbing, deburring and shaving. In order to manufacture helical gears with cold forging process, a research project supported by government has been conducted by Daegu university, KIMS and TAK and this paper deals with effects of back pressure forming technique to cold forging of helical gear as a fundamental research.

  • In recent years, many researches on new storage media with high capacity and information are developing. For manufacture of optical storage with high capacity, the injection molding process is generally used. In order to increase the filling ratio of the injection molding structure, the injection molding process required for high injection pressure, packing pressure and temperature control of the mold. However, conventional injection molding process is difficult to increase the filling ratio using injection master with the range of several nanometers and high aspect ratio. In order to improve and increase filling ratio of nano-structure with high aspect ratio, the active temperature control of injection mold was used. Experimental conditions were used injection pressure, time and temperature. Consequently, by using the peltier device into injection mold, we carried out the efficient and active temperature control of mold at low cost.

  • Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) refers to a material removal process done by rubbing a work piece against a polishing pad under load in the presence of chemically active and abrasive containing slurry. CMP process is a combination of chemical dissolution and mechanical action. The mechanical action of CMP involves hydrodynamic behavior. The liquid slurry is trapped between the work piece and pad forming a hydrodynamic film. For the first step to understand material removal mechanism of the CMP process, the hydrodynamic analysis is done with semiconductor wafer. Three-dimensional Reynolds equation is applied to get pressure distribution of the slurry film. Shear stress distributions on the wafer surface are also analyzed

  • Because an injected spray development process consists of impinging and free spray in the diesel engine, it is needed to analyze the impinging spray and free spray, simultaneously, in order to study the diesel spray behavior. To dominate combustion characteristics in diesel engine is interaction between injected fuel and ambient gas, that is, process of mixture formation. Also it is very important to analyze liquid and vapor phases of injected fuel on the investigation of mixing process, respectively and simultaneously. Therefore, in this study, the behavior characteristics of the liquid phase and the vapor phase of diesel spray was studied by using exciplex fluorescence method in high temperature and injection pressure field. Finally, it can be confirmed that the distribution of vapor concentration is more uniform in the case of the high injection than in that of the low injection pressure.

Effects of Air Compressibility on the Hydrodynamic Forces of a Bag

  • The hydrodynamic problem when the pressurized bag submerges partially into water and oscillates was formulated by Lee(1992), and the solution method was given, In his formulation, however, the compressilbility of air was neglected and the pressure inside the bag was assumed to be constant. In this paper, the formulation was done including the air compressibility and the wall to block fling around phenomenon. The compression process was assumed to be a isothermal process for a static problem, isentropic process for a dynamic problem. And the stability was analyzed for the static problem. Through the various numerical calculations, the forces and the shape of the bag were compared with those of a rigid body case, constant pressure case, and variable pressure case.

Burst pressure estimation of Alloy 690 axial cracked steam generator U-bend tubes using finite element damage analysis

  • This paper presents numerical estimation of burst pressures of axial cracked U-bend tubes, considering the U-bending process analysis. The validity of the FE simulations is confirmed by comparing with published experimental data. From parametric analyses, it is shown that existing EPRI burst pressure estimation equations for straight tubes can be conservatively used to estimate burst pressures of the U-bend tubes. This is due to the increase in yield strength during the U-bending process. The degree of conservatism would decrease with increasing the bend radius and with increasing the crack depth.
