  • This paper describes design procedure of suboptimal control to minimize a performance index which is represented as sum of square output error and the heat input power in arc welding process. Heat input and temperature of a fixed point on the surface of the material are concerned as input and output of the process, repectively. The suboptimal control law considered here in is a proportional plus integral type and is implemented by using only the output variables available from sensor which is also optimally located in a fixed point w.r.t. a moving weld touch.

  • The solidification process in a cylinder with finite thickness in studied by explicit finite difference method. The temperature distribution, the solidification front profile and the dischrged latent heat for the process are obtained. It is found that the solidification front profile is almost linear except in the vicinity of the initation of phase change. This result motivates us to use linear relations between the position of solidification and time for approximate calculations.

  • Induction heating is a process that is accompanied with magnetic and thermal situation. When the high-frequency current flows in the coil, induced eddy current generates heat to conductor. To simulate an induction heating process, the finite element analysis program was developed. A coupling method between the magnetic and thermal routines was developed. In the process of magnetic analysis and thermal analysis, magnetic material properties and thermal material properties depending on temperature are taken into consideration. In this paper, to predict the angular deformation, temperature difference and the shape of heat affected zone were discussed. Also appropriate coil shape for maximum angular deformation were proposed.

  • Film absorption involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the gas-liquid system. While the non-absorbable gas does not participate directly In the absorption process. its pretence does affect the overall heat and mass transfer. An experimental study was performed to investigate the heat and mass transfer characteristics of LiBr-H$_2$O solution flow ing over 6-row horizontal tubes with the water vapor absorption in the pretence of non-absorbable gases. The volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gas, air, was varied from 0.17 to 10.0%. The combined effects of the solution flow rate and its concentration on the heat and mass transfer coefficients were also examined. The presence of 2% volumetric concentration of air resulted in a 25% reduction in the Nusselt number and 41% reduction in the Sherwood number Optimum film Reynolds number was found to exist at which the heat and mass transfer reach their maximum value independent of air contents. Reduced Nusselt and Sherwood numbers. defined as the ratio of Nusselt and Sherwood numbers at given non-absorbable gas content to that with pure water vapor, were correlated to account for the reduction in the heat and mass transfer due to non-absorbable gases in a falling film absorption process.

  • In order to examine the availability of heat treatment for color developing in persimmon dyeing, the rayon fabrics dyed with persimmon extract from unripe persimmon which was used after stock and fermentation. Dyed fabrics were heated at various temperature and time by contacting press heat and drying heat. Color developing results were influenced by the difference of heating method. Press heating method is more available than drying heat method. Effect of temperature and time on ${\Delta}Ea^*b^*$ and color values of dyed rayon fabrics was considerable. Considering the practical aspect, The temperature around $140{\sim}160^{\circ}C$ and the time no longer 40 minutes can be reach the region of the full color developing by press heating process. It was very shortened than any other method(drying air heat, xenon radiation, sunlight). The dyed rayon fabrics with heat treatment have darker and deeper red-yellow color than which by sunlight and xenon radiation.

  • An 1 lbf of NASA standard monopropellant thruster, MRE-1, is used for KOMPSAT (Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite) which is launched in 2006 and provides reliable and cost-effective means for attitude and maneuvering control system. The monopropellant thruster obtains required thrust by thermal decomposition process of propellant through catalyst bed. During firing, the decomposition plays a role of a heat source that may occur an excessive radiation heat transfer to peripheral structures and electronics in relatively low temperature condition. Therefore, the radiation heat shield is needed to prevent the critical radiative heat exchange between thruster and satellite during firing. This paper summarizes an overall development process of radiation heat shield from the design engineering up to the manufacturing.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of the micro-fin tubes before and after the tube-expansion process. Test tubes are single-grooved micro-fin tubes made of copper with an outer diameter of 9.52 mm before the tube-expansion. The direct heating method is applied in order to make the refrigerant evaporated in the micro-fin tubes. The test ranges of the heat flux, mass flux, and the saturation pressure are 5 to 15kW/$m^2$, 100 to 200 kg/$m^2s$ and 540 to 790 kPa, respectively. The effects of the mass flux, heat flux, and the saturation pressure of the refrigerant on the pressure drop and the heat transfer are presented for the refrigerant R22. In the test conditions of this study, the heat transfer coefficient for the micro-fin tube after the tube-expansion is about 16.5% smaller than that before the tube-expansion because the fin height of micro-fin is reduced and the fin shape becomes flatter. The micro-fin tube after the tube-expansion has about 7.7% greater average pressure drop than that before the tube-expansion process.

  • This study is on wear damage of the material for a molding machine that be used at finally cutting of metal beam made in roll forming process of vehicle bump beam process line. SKD11 steel was used with the material for cutting mold jig. In the cutting mold jig, Ti diffusion heat treatment after vacuum heat treatment was carried out for upgrade of surface hardness and anti-wear. Also, the heat treatments by various methods were performed to compare the wear damage degree against above the existing heat treatment. Wear loss and friction coefficient were obtained from wear test. And, micro Vickers hardness values were compared with damaged parts or not of cutting mold jig. Micro Vickers hardness value appeared higher at the undamaged part by Ti diffusion heat treatment. The micro Vickers hardness well followed a two-parameter Weibull probability distribution.

  • An experimental study on evaporative heat transfer characteristics in micro-fin tubes before and after expansion process has been performed with R-22. Single-grooved micro-fin tubes with outer diameter of 9.52 mm were used as test sections, and it was uniformly heated by applying direct current to the test tubes. Experiments were conducted at mass flow rates of 20 and 30 kg/hr. For each mass flow rate condition, evaporation temperature was set at 5 and $15^{\circ}C$and heat flux was changed from 6 to 11 kW/$m^2$ The evaporative heat transfer coefficient of micro-fin tubes after expansion is decreased because of the crush of fins and enlargement of inner diameter compared to that before expansion. Convective boiling effect decreased remarkably at higher quality range in the micro-fin tube after expansion, and the difference of the heat transfer coefficient in micro-fin tubes before and after expansion was greater for higher quality region. The evaporative heat transfer coefficient of the micro-fin tube after expansion was 19.9% smaller on the average than that before expansion.

  • The purpose of this study was to numerically analyze the heat flow characteristics of an automotive radiator. Heat flow analyses were conducted on the cooling water and outdoor air of the radiator, as well as the temperature distribution of the cooling water after heat transfer. The results of the study revealed that neither heat transfer nor radiator volume was affected by the position of the inlet of cooling water. However, temperature distribution was affected by the position of both the inlet and outlet. In case of heat transfer, three models underwent about 158 kW of heat transfer. The difference in cooling water temperature was about $10^{\circ}C$. In case of pressure drop, the core external air side was reduced to about 1,375 Pa, and the internal cooling water side about 14,570 Pa.
