  • Density Probability Distribution Functions (PDFs) are a classic statistical way to study properties of Interstellar Medium (ISM) turbulence. In our three-dimensional MHD simulations, density PDFs of the position-position velocity (PPV) spaces are close to a log-normal distribution. the PDF widths depend on the plasma parameters such as magnetic strength and sonic Mach number. Futhermore, we compare these simulations results to Galactic molecular clouds observed by Jackson et. al (2006). By fitting of the velocity dispersion in the spectral line observation, volume density PDFs of the defined molecular clouds indicate that the sound speeds of the turbulences seem to have a few times larger than the simulation results. In order to understand the inconsistency with general characteristics of turbulence, we consider other simulations inducing the turbulent flow randomly at small driving scales. We find that the density PDF width decreases at more smaller driving scale. Finally, the simulations suggest that sources of ISM turbulence in Galactic molecular clouds can be important on small scales.

  • Theoretical models that can be used to predict the range of main lobe widths and the probability distribution of the peak sidelobe levels of two-dimensionally sparse arrays are presented here. The arrays are considered to comprise microphones that are randomly positioned on a segmented grid of a given size. First, approximate expressions for the expected squared magnitude of the aperture smoothing function and the variance of the squared magnitude of the aperture smoothing function about this mean are formulated for the random arrays considered in the present study. By using the variance function, the mean value and the lower end of the range i.e., the first I percent of the mainlobe distribution can be predicted with reasonable accuracy. To predict the probability distribution of the peak sidelobe levels, distributions of levels are modeled by a Weibull distribution at each peak in the sidelobe region of the expected squared magnitude of the aperture smoothing function. The two parameters of the Weibull distribution are estimated from the means and variances of the levels at the corresponding locations. Next, the probability distribution of the peak sidelobe levels are assumed to be determined by a procedure in which the peak sidelobe level is determined as the maximum among a finite number of independent random sidelobe levels. It is found that the model obtained from the above approach predicts the probability density function of the peak sidelobe level distribution reasonably well for the various combinations of two different numbers of microphones and grid sizes tested in the present study. The application of these models to the design of random, sparse arrays having specified performance levels is also discussed.

  • The objective of this study was to assess the flood probability based on temporal distribution of forecasted-rainfall in Cheongmicheon watershed. In this study, 6-hr rainfalls were disaggregated into hourly rainfall using the Multiplicative Random Cascade (MRC) model, which is a stochastic rainfall time disaggregation model and it was repeated 100 times to make 100 rainfalls for each storm event. The watershed runoff was estimated using the Clark unit hydrograph method with disaggregated rainfall and watershed characteristics. Using the peak discharges of the simulated hydrographs, the probability distribution was determined and parameters were estimated. Using the parameters, the probability density function is shown and the flood probability is calculated by comparing with the design flood of Cheongmicheon watershed. The flood probability results differed for various values of rainfall and rainfall duration. In addition, the flood probability calculated in this study was compared with the actual flood damage in Cheongmicheon watershed (R2 = 0.7). Further, this study results could be used for flood forecasting.

  • We present a new version of the first return time test for pseudorandomness. Let $R_n$ be the first return time of initial n-block with overlapping. An algorithm to calculate the probability distribution of the first return time $R_n$ for each starting block is presented and used to test pseudorandom number generators. The standard Z-test for log $R_n$ is applied to test the pseudorandom number generators.

  • Detailed analyses have been presentd for a basic single-electron-logic-cell consisting of two single-electron-transistors (SETs) in series. The interconnection between two SETs has been treated as a coulomb island and the joint probability density function of all three coulomb islands (two from the SETs and one form the interconnection) has been exactly calculated. The average number of electrons in each coulomb island and the steady-state ouptut voltage have been calculated and analyzed.

  • Extreme environments and freak wave characteristics in the coastal waters of Korean Peninsula are analyzed using the observed wave data. Freak wave has been intensely emphasized as an important environmental force parameter in several recent research works. However, the mechanism and occurrence probability of freak wave are not clarified. The aims of this study we: to summarize the distribution of extreme environment for wind waves, and to find occurrence probability of freak wave in the coastal waters of Korean Peninsula. These extreme sea conditions are discussed by applying extreme value analysis method, and the statistic characteristics are summarized which can be used to the design and analysis of coastal structures. The mechanism and the occurrence probability of freak wave are also discussed in detail using wave parameters in considered with wave deformation in the coastal waters. Key Words : extreme wave, freak wave, extreme analysis, design wave, probability density.

  • The relative frequency of order statistics is investigated for independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables. Specifically, it is shown that the probability $Pr\{X_{[s]}=x\}$ is no less than the probability $Pr\{X_{[r]}=x\}$ at any point $x{\geqq}x_0$ when r$X_{[r]}$ denotes the r-th order statistic of an i.i.d. discrete random vector and $x_0$ depends on the population probability distribution. A similar result for i.i.d. continuous random vectors is also presented.

  • Let {$X_n$, $n{\geq}1$} be a sequence of i.i.d. random variables with absolutely continuous cumulative distribution function(cdf) F(x) and the corresponding probability density function(pdf) f(x). In this paper, we give characterizations of Pareto and Weibull distribution by considering conditional expectations of record values.

  • Let {$X_{n},\;n\;\geq\;1$} be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables with absolutely continuous cumulative distribution function (cdf) F(x) and probability density function (pdf) f(x). Suppose $X_{U(m)},\;m = 1,\;2,\;{\cdots}$ be the upper record values of {$X_{n},\;n\;\geq\;1$}. It is shown that the linearity of the conditional expectation of $X_{U(n+2)}$ given $X_{U(n)}$ characterizes the lomax, exponential and pareto distributions.

  • The DC dielectric breakdown of epoxy composites used for transformer was experimented and then its data were simulated by Weibull distribution equation in this study. The more hardener increased the stronger breakdown strength at low temperature because of cross-linked density by the virtue of ester radical, and the breakdown strength of specimens with filler was lower than it of non-filler specimens because it was believed that the adding filler formed interface, charges were accumulated in it, the molecular mobility was raised, the electric field was concentrated, electrons were accelerated and then electron avalanche was early accomplished. From the analysis of Wei bull distribution equation, it was confirmed that as the allowed breakdown probability was· given by 0.1[%], the value of 'applied field was needed to be under 17.20[kV/mm].
