  • In this paper, the miniaturization of a chipless RFID tag using an interdigital-capacitor-shaped slot was studied. The proposed interdigital-capacitor-shaped slot was appended on the rectangular conductor plate printed on one side of a 20 mm × 50 mm FR4 substrate with a thickness of 0.8 mm. The resonant dip frequency of the bistatic RCS for the proposed interdigital-capacitor-shaped slot was compared with the cases when the H-shaped and modified bent H-shaped slots were added, respectively, on the conductor plate. The simulated resonant dip frequencies for H-shaped and modified bent H-shaped slots were 5.907 GHz and 3.741 GHz, respectively. When the proposed interdigital-capacitor-shaped slot was added, the resonant dip frequency was decreased to 2.889 GHz, and, therefore, the slot length was reduced by 51.1% compared to the H-shaped slot case. Experiment results show that the resonant dip frequency of the fabricated nterdigital-capacitor-shaped slot was 3.07 GHz.

  • In this letter, we propose a novel printed helix antenna for RFID reader in UHF band. The printed strip line of the antenna is first wound up outside a polygonal shaped layer and then the winding continues on an inner layer to control the overall gain and the radiation pattern. In addition, the winding pitch angles on each layer have either negative or positive values resulting in the broad CP bandwidth. The detail structure of the antenna was optimized using Pareto genetic algorithm(GA), so as to obtain excellent performances for RFID reader antennas. The optimized two-layered polygonal helix was fabricated on the cardboard of a flexible substrate and the performances were measured and compared with the simulations. The fabricated antenna was made up of copper tape which can adhere to a flexible cardboard and had 21.4 % matching bandwidth, 31.9 % CP bandwidth, readable range of $5.5m^2$ with kr=3.2. Also based on the current distribution of the strip line of the antenna and sensitivity of the antenna bents points, we confirmed that the antenna has the quarter-wave transformer near the feed for the broad matching bandwidth and radiates the traveling wave for the broad CP bandwidth using the bent strip line.

  • RFID printing technology has emerged recently as an important tool for leading future IT. Therefore, many manufacturers concerning on low cost and mass production of the related products pay close attention to the printing technology. In order to realize printed electronics, the technologies for fine line-width/gap printing and registration are essential work. This study proposes a precise Roll to Roll control system that is capable of tilting two posts. Two controllable tilting posts can adjust film position at traverse direction for the precision registration. A mathematical model for representing the geometric features of each posts in Roll to Roll printing system is established first. Then an operating program is built to implement the system and to control film movement. For experimental test, a hard ware system is fabricated which is consisted of two AC servo motors, two posts tilting mechanisms, several guide rolls, and so on. The test results show the proposed system can control the film position precisely at transverse direction.

  • In this paper, we present a two-element circularly-polarized antenna array for UHF-band RFID reader applications. The antenna element in the array is a comer-truncated rectangular patch placed on a thick plastic-foam dielectric. The patch is fed on one of its edges by a microstrip line printed on a separate thin substrate. The array antenna is fed by a microstrip power divider. Parametric studies on the patch are carried out, from which an optimum design of a single antenna element is derived. The element spacing and the feed network of the array are investigated. A commercial electromagnetic software is employed in the analysis and design of the antenna. The designed array is fabricated and tested. Measurements show good performance characteristics of the fabricated antenna: a 11.2-dBi gain, a reflection coefficient of - 14 dB, an axial ratio less than 3 dB over 3-dB beamwidths of 40 and 60 degrees on two principal planes.

  • In hospitals and pharmacies, the distribution of medicines is an important part. Any mistakes, misses, fake medicines and expired medicines can cause medical accidents. With the widespread application of the Internet of Things technology (IoT), traditional drug distribution methods need to be upgraded. This article proposes a drug distribution management scheme based on the Internet of Things technology. In the production of drugs, a flexible RFID tag was printed on the packaging box, which stored a series of information such as drug name, dosage, raw materials, efficacy, production date, expiration date, and manufacturer. The use of a drug distribution management system combined with RFID readers can identify drug information and effectively prevent the occurrence of erroneous, missed, counterfeit, and expired drugs. It can also improve management efficiency, reduce management costs, and control management risks. Through the circuit design and software system development, the test results show that this solution is effective and feasible, the proposed method can achieve the expected results.

  • This paper introduces development process and results of HF & UHF band(13.56 MHz, 920 MHz) tag antennas using a single-side printing method on a PE film. The size of tag antenna is designed in the area of $80mm{\times}50mm$, little bit smaller than a credit card. The UHF tag antenna, $76mm{\times}44mm$, is located at the outside of the card size tag antenna, and the HF tag antenna, $40 mm{\times}42 mm$, is located at the center of the UHF tag antenna. The UHF and HF tag antennas are designed with consideration of coupling effects. The single-side printing method with a jumper structure without using a via is used to make a loop antenna of HF tag antenna. The reading range of UHF tag antenna is about 6m, and the reading of HF tag antenna is about 5 cm. The designed tag antennas have long enough reading ranges for both bands. The tag is applicable to logistics and authentification.

  • U-Publication, the Tag-Embedded publication, is one of U-Media. U-Media is defined as a media where human creates and consumes content through not only human cognitive and perceptual processes but also through the interactions between surrounding digital systems. U-Media provides information by generating, collecting, and attaching the content itself and the related information based on the interaction of the bio-systems incorporating digital information and devices embedded in humans, and surrounding objects including external digital devices. Using U-Publication, readers consume its content not only in offline but also online through a mobile RFID reader which touches and connects the URLs embedded in the RFID tags attached to it. Readers can consume the additional content though the hyperlinks attached to U-Publication and perform commercial activity as well as consumer the printed content. This paper defines the RFID-Tagged publication, proposes its related business models, and evaluates the alternative business models through a simulation study.

  • Roll-to-roll process is an emerging mass production method for printed and flexible electronics such as touch screen panel, RFID tag, thin film solar cell, and flexible display due to its high throughput. High precision in printing and coating is required to apply functional materials onto substrate. For such reason, every part of the roll-to-roll equipment needs to be precisely fabricated and to retain its precision under regular operation. In this article, the precision of cantilever type idler roller and a novel method to mitigate its deflection under web tension loading are discussed and the method is verified using both the numerical and the experimental works. The proposed method improves the structural rigidity of cantilever type roller whose advantages, such as low capital cost and high web path configurability, are maintained.

  • Printing technology has begun to get into the spotlight in many ways due to the low cost effectiveness to existent semi-conductor process. It also has very useful application areas, not only paper printing but also patterning for LCD color tilter, Photovoltaic patterning, RFID antenna, OLED, and so on. In this study, an apparatus of gravure offset printing was developed for fine line width printing. The pattern was composed of $20{\mu}m$ size of continuous lines of which pitch size was $40{\mu}m$. The printed pattern shows that it is possible to make around $20{\mu}m$ line-width printing pattern. The roll-to-roll printing system for fine line-width printing based on primary experiment is presented. For testing of multi-layer printing, the system was designed to be capable of printing two different materials from each printing unit using gravure-offset printing method and have a function of alignment of two printed materials.

  • This research is about the drying and curing characteristic of conductivity metallic ink on-line curing device in order to improve the curing time for productivity in RFID Gravure printing. The curing process is carried out to increase the electric conductivity after the metallic ink is printed on the substrate. The metal ink is composed of nano-sized silver or copper particles. In this research, the combined IR and Hot air curing system is used and its results is compared with those of oven, IR and Hot Air type respectively. Generally the curing time in the past is about 3 minutes. But the combined system (IR+Hot Air) in this research shows that curing time is less than 30 seconds. These results is much faster than those of other system. This study can be help to make Roll-to-Roll drying and curing process for mass and continuous production on-line.
