Seaweeds represent a widely harnessed marine resource that are valued for their abundant supply of essential nutrients, particularly proteins and amino acids. In Korea, where over 500 species of seaweed thrive and more than 50 are utilized for culinary purposes, seaweed has become a staple in regular diets. In this study, we focused on five of the most commonly consumed seaweed species in Korea: Capsosiphon fulvescens, Hizikia fusiforme, Porphyra yezoensis, Saccharina japonica, and Undaria pinnatifida. We closely examined the amino acid compositions of these five species. High-performance liquid chromatography showed that aspartic acid, glutamic acid, alanine, and leucine were the most abundant amino acids in the seaweeds. Principal component analysis revealed that the five seaweed species could be classified into three clusters according to their amino acid composition, partially corroborating findings from the phylogenetic analysis. Among various amino acids, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and alanine were the primary amino acids driving differentiation. Notably, U. pinnatifida and C. fulvescens, which demonstrated close phylogenetic proximity, exhibited remarkably similar amino acid profiles. Conversely, although P. yezoensis and S. japonica shared a phylogenetic relationship, they displayed distinctly different amino acid compositions. H. fusiforme emerged as a distinct group in both analyses.
We performed the numerical analyses of thirty two morphological characters for twenty four populations of eight Korean Ilex L. taxa. Principal component analyses showed that the first three principal components were related to the total covariance by 67.0%, and the proportions of PCl, PC2 and PC3 were 31.5%, 21.1%, and 14.4%, respectively. And the closely related characteristics to the PCl, PC2 and PC3 were some reproductive characters such as the morphology of sepal, petal, anther, pistil and fruits and vegetative characters such as the morphology of petiol and leaf margin, the trichomes on the twigs, the leaf duration. From the two dimensional plottings by the eigenvalues of PCl, PC2 and PC3, six grouped were clustered as Ilex integra, I cornuta, I x wandoensis, I. rotunda, I. macropoda and I. macropoda for. pseudomacropoda, I. crenata and I. crenata var. microphilla. The numerical analysis was useful for the taxonomy of Korean Ilex because it clearly seperated the populations of taxa included in this study. The identification key was provided with the diagnostic characters.

Elastic and elasto-plastic stress analyses of AlN/Cu and AlN/W pints produced by active-metal brazing method using Ag-Cu-Ti insert-metal were performed with use of Finite-Element-Method(FEM). The results of stress analyses were compared with those from the pint strength tests and the observations of fracture behaviors. It was shown that a remarkably larger maximum principal stress is built in the AlN/Cu pint compared to the A1N/ W joint. Especially, the stress concentration with tensile component was confirmed at the free surface close to the bonded interface of AlN/Cu. The elasto-plastic analysis under consideration of stress relaxation effect of Ag-Cu-Ti insert possessing a so-called 'soft-metal effect' showed that the insert leads to a lowering of maximum principal stress in AlNiCu pint, even though an increase of the insert thickness above 100$\mu\textrm{m}$ could not bring its further decrease. The maximum pint strengths measured by shear test were 52 and 108 MPa for AlNiCu and AlN/W pints. respectively. Typical fractures of AlN/Cu pints occurred in a form of 'dome' which initiated from the free surface of AlN close to the bonded interface and proceeded towards the AlN inside forming a large angle. AlN/W pints were usually fractured at AlN side along the interface of AlN/insert-metal.

To determine whether metabolite fingerprinting for whole cell extracts based on Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy can be used to discriminate and compare metabolic equivalence, standard medicinal parts from four medicinal plants (Cynanchum wilfordii Hemsley, Atractylodes japonica Koidz, Polygonum multiflorum Thunberg and Astragalus membranaceus Bunge) and their in vitro-produced adventitious roots were analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy. The principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) from the FT-IR spectral data showed that the whole metabolic pattern from Cynanchum wilfordii was highly similar to Astragalus membranaceus. However, Atractylodes japonica and Polygonum multiflorum showed significantly different metabolic patterns. Furthermore, adventitious roots from Cynanchum wilfordii and Astragalus membranaceus also showed similar metabolic patterns compared to their standard medicinal parts. These results clearly show that mass proliferation of adventitious roots may be applied to aquire novel supply of standard medicinal parts from medicinal plants. However, the whole metabolic pattern from adventitious roots of Atractylodes japonica and Polygonum multiflorum were not similar to their standard medicinal parts. Furthermore, FT-IR spectroscopy combined with multivariate analyses established in this study may be applied as an alternative tool to discriminate the whole metabolic equivalence from several standard medicinal parts. Thus, we suggest that these metabolic discrimination systems may be applied for metabolic standardization of herbal medicinal resources.
Recent three years of geomagnetic data were analyzed using a method of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Wavelet Based Semblance Analysis to investigate any geomagnetic variation caused by earthquakes. This method predicts the geomagnetic variation using the PCA analysis of geomagnetic data, then compares the predicted geomagnetic field with the observation of finding any significant residual. Although it is well known that geomagnetic variation is related with earthquake, most analyses have been limited to some specific cases reflecting the correlation. In this study, we analyze seventeen cases of earthquakes that occurred in and around the Korean peninsula from 2009 to 2011 and that show the precursory and co-seismic relation between the earthquakes and geomagnetic variations.

We compared two different zooplankton data sets simultaneously obtained at the same place with different mesh-sized nets. Smaller mesh-sized net yielded less diverse zooplankton taxa. However, it was difficult to generalize the relationship between the size of the mesh of the net used and the length of the species list observed. It was not only because the sample sizes obtained by smaller mesh net were relatively smaller due to the clogging problem but also because smaller mesh net usually collected more tiny animals that were difficult to identify at lower taxonomic categories. In terms of abundances, on the other hand, the smaller and the larger mesh-sized nets collected smaller and larger-sized animals more effectively, respectively. The abundances of small sized animals were usually greater than those of large-sized animals by about an order of differences. Due to this different catchability of the nets, the community analyses based on Principal Component Analysis led to different results for the same community.
This paper discusses quantitative analyses of patents published for cathode active materials for lithium secondary batteries based on layer structure. Numbers of the patents analyzed were 356, 1628, 2915, 439, and 611 for Korea, USA, Japan, Europe, and PCT (WO), respectively. Trends of improved technologies and alternative technologies concerning lithium cobalt, from 1991 to 2012 were examined and the patent shares distribution of each principal countries about lithium secondary battery technologies were also scrutinized. The number of patents for the mixed structure technology and next-generation lithium secondary battery technology increased numerously in 2000. Particularly in 2005, lots of patents were also published and SANYO (34.5%), SONY (17.5%), LG (7%), and SAMSUNG (5.5%) possessed leading patent applicants. Finally, the research focus on cathode active materials for lithium secondary batteries was confirmed by bubble chart distributions for component-by-step process.
Background: In order to achieve the goals of community pharmacy practice, its legal, labour-related, and economic barriers need to be identified. This study examined pharmacists' perceptions of constraints on providing optimal pharmacy services in order to identify underlying factors and analyse the associations between barriers and pharmaceutical services in community pharmacies. Methods: A survey targeting pharmacy owners was conducted from May to June 2012 using a structured questionnaire including nine pharmaceutical service items. According to the service provision level, we classified pharmacists as inactive (fewer than 5 items among the listed 9 service items) and active providers (5 or more items). Principal component analysis was used to group significant factors for barriers into four thematic components. Associations between the participants' demographics and pharmacy characteristics and the services provided were explored by logistic regression analyses. Results: Participants were 402 pharmacists. Over 60% provided disease management services for hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidaemia. Variables that affected pharmaceutical services included the lack of separate areas for patient counselling (OR: 2.12, 95% CI: 1.18-3.80), and clinical knowledge and information-related barriers (OR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.36-0.97). Conclusion: Strategies for improving clinical knowledge and providing expeditious information are necessary in order to improve community pharmacy services.
There are several existing reports of microarray chip use for assessment of altered gene expression in different diseases. In fact, there have been over 1.5 million assays of this kind performed over the last twenty years, which have influenced clinical and translational research studies. The most commonly used DNA microarray platforms are Affymetrix GeneChip and Quality Control Software along with their GeneChip Probe Arrays. These chips are created using several quality controls to confirm the success of each assay, but their actual impact on gene expression profiles had not been previously analyzed until the appearance of several bioinformatics tools for this purpose. We here performed a data mining analysis, in this case specifically focused on ovarian cancer, as well as healthy ovarian tissue and ovarian cell lines, in order to confirm quality control results and associated variation in gene expression profiles. The microarray data used in our research were downloaded from ArrayExpress and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and analyzed with Expression Console Software using RMA, MAS5 and Plier algorithms. The gene expression profiles were obtained using Partek Genomics Suite v6.6 and data were visualized using principal component analysis, heat map, and Venn diagrams. Microarray quality control analysis showed that roughly 40% of the microarray files were false negative, demonstrating over- and under-estimation of expressed genes. Additionally, we confirmed the results performing second analysis using independent samples. About 70% of the significant expressed genes were correlated in both analyses. These results demonstrate the importance of appropriate microarray processing to obtain a reliable gene expression profile.

The study was conducted to analyze the spatio-temporal changes in water quality of the major 36 sampling stations of Nakdong River, depending on each station, season using the 17 water quality variables from 2000 to 2010. The result was verified to interpret the characteristics of water quality variables in a more accurate manners. According to the Principal component analysis (PCA) and Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) results; the results of these analyses were identified 4 factors, Factor 1 (nutrients) included the concentrations of T-N, T-P, $NO_{3}-N$, $PO_{4}-P$, DTN, DTP for sampling station and season, Factor 2 (organic pollutants) included the concentrations of BOD, COD, Chl-a, Factor 3 (microbes) included the concentrations of F.Coli, T.Coli, and Factor 4 (others) included the concentrations of pH, DO. The results of a Cluster analysis indicated that Geumhogang 6 was the most contaminated site, while tributaries and most of the down stream sites of Nakdong River were mainly affected by each nutrients (Factor 1) and organic pollutants (Factor 2). The verification consequence of Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) from Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) result can be summarized as follows: we could find additional relations between variables besides the structure from EFA, which we obtained through the second-order final modeling adopted in CFA. Nutrients had the biggest impact on water pollution for each sampling station and season. In particular, It was analyzed that P-series pollutant should be controlled during spring and winter and N-series pollutant should be controlled during summer and fall.
