In this study, a statistical investigation was carried out for the evaluation of any relationship between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHss) associated with ambient aerosols and other air quality parameters under varying meteorological conditions. Daily measurements for PAHs and air quality/meteorological parameters were selected from a data-base constructed by a comprehensive air monitoring in London during 1985-1987. Correlation coefficients were calculated to examine any significant relationship between the PAHs and other individual variables. Statistical analysis was further Performed for the air quality/meteorological data set using a principal component analysis to derive important factors inherent in the interactions among the variables. A total of six components were identified, representing vehicle emission, photochemical activity/volatilization, space heating, atmospheric humidity, atmospheric stability, and wet deposition. It was found from a stepwise multiple regression analysis that the vehicle emission component is overall the most important factor contributing to the variability of PAHs concentrations at the monitoring site. The photochemical activity/volatilzation component appeared to be also an important factor particularly for the lower molecular weight PAHs. In general, the space heating component was found to be next important factor, while the contributions of other three components to the variance of each PAHs did not appear to be as much important as the first three components in most cases. However, a consistency for these components in their negative correlations with PAHs data was found, indicating their roles in the depletion of PAHs concentrations in the urban atmosphere.
A procedure to predict the fatigue life of rubber components based on the signed principal strain method was proposed. A tension-compression rubber specimen with Jang-gu shape was designed and principal strain distribution was obtained by using the nonlinear finite element analysis. Finite element analysis and fatigue test of strut rubber mount were conducted to evaluate the fatigue life prediction procedure proposed. A procedure was employed to predict the fatigue life of strut rubber mount. Predicted fatigue lives have a good agreement with tested lives within a factor of 3.
Twenty two varieties of pecan including wild types were classified based on 6 characters measured by principal component analysis score distance. The results are summarized as fellow. Twenty two varieties were classified into 5 groups based in PCA score distance. Five groups were distinctly characterized by many morphological characters. Total variation could be explained by 51%, 95%, 99% with first, third and fifth principal components respectively. Varimax rotation of the factor loading of the first factors indicated that the first component was highly loaded with leaf characters, the second component with fruit characters, but fruit length was negative loaded. The second, the third and the fourths groups of cultivars had very close genetic parentage similarity.
The changes in volatiles of the model system were analyzed by GC and GC-MS before and after retorting. The GC data were analyzed statistically by applying the analysis of variance, and 42 peaks were selected at 5% significance level. Multivariate statistical analysis was performed with these 42 peaks as independent variables. Through the stepwise discriminant analysis, 8 peaks, which corresponded to the compounds such as 2-heptanone, cis-3-hexenal, 2-pentyl-furan, 1-methyl-trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol, 2-hexanone, 3-octanone, trans, trans-nona-2,4-dienal and 1-octen-3-ol, were obtained in sequence to distinguish the samples with and without retorting. The principal component analysis of a set of 8 independent variables resulted in 3 principal components which accounted for 96.1% of the variance, while the first principal component (PC 1) explained 76.5% of the total variance. In addition, through the factor analysis of the principal components, the peaks 11, 20 and 21 could be grouped togather in accordance with the direction and the size while the peaks 9, 33 and 39 constituted the second group in the direction.
Thirty-eight glutinous rice varieties were classified into nine groups on the scatter diagram by the upper two principal components (56% contribution to the total information) based on eleven physicochemical characteristics including the viscograms and physical properties of cooked rice. The first principal component was the factor mainly associated with the viscogram characteristics of rice flour emulsion and the second was the factor chiefly related to the physical properties of cooked rice and water absorbability of rice grain. Indica glutinous rices were clearly distinguished from japonica ones by the first principal component score. Javanica glutinous rices were widely distributed on the intermediate zone between indica and japonica or on several japonica rice groups. Significant positive or negative correlations were found among water absorption rates of rice grain, physical properties of cooked rice, and viscogram characteristics of rice flour. Especially in japonica glutinous rices, the breakdown and setback viscosities of rice flour were closely associated with the alkali digestion value of milled rice and the stickiness of cooked rice. The frequency ratio of short glucose chains (A-chain) to intermediate glucose chains (B-chain), the ratio of B- chains to long glucose chains (C-chain) and the relative frequency of A- or B-chain fractions representing the amylopection structure of rice starch was closely associated with the breakdown and setback viscosities of rice flour.
This study was based on water quality data of the Lake Doam watershed, monitored from 2010 to 2013 at eight different sites with multiple physiochemical parameters. The dataset was divided into two sub-datasets, namely, non-rainy and rainy. Principal component analysis (PCA) and factor analysis (FA) techniques were applied to evaluate seasonal correlations of water quality parameters and extract the most significant parameters influencing stream water quality. The first five principal components identified by PCA techniques explained greater than 80% of the total variance for both datasets. PCA and FA results indicated that total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, total phosphorus, and dissolved inorganic phosphorus were the most significant parameters under the non-rainy condition. This indicates that organic and inorganic pollutants loads in the streams can be related to discharges from point sources (domestic discharges) and non-point sources (agriculture, forest) of pollution. During the rainy period, turbidity, suspended solids, nitrate nitrogen, and dissolved inorganic phosphorus were identified as the most significant parameters. Physical parameters, suspended solids, and turbidity, are related to soil erosion and runoff from the basin. Organic and inorganic pollutants during the rainy period can be linked to decayed matters, manure, and inorganic fertilizers used in farming. Thus, the results of this study suggest that principal component analysis techniques are useful for analysis and interpretation of data and identification of pollution factors, which are valuable for understanding seasonal variations in water quality for effective management.
The number of variables exceeds the number of samples in microarray data. We propose a nonparametric local linear logistic classification procedure using orthogonal components for classifying high-dimensional microarray data. The proposed method is based on the local likelihood and can be applied to multi-class classification. We applied the local linear logistic classification method using PCA, PLS, and factor analysis components as new features to Leukemia data and colon data, and compare the performance of the proposed method with the conventional statistical classification procedures. The proposed method outperforms the conventional ones for each component, and PLS has shown best performance when it is embedded in the proposed method among the three orthogonal components.

The study of water environment system in Changnyeong-Haman weir section using a statistical analysis has been conducted. Statistical analyses used in this study were the correlation analysis, the principal components, and the factor analysis. The purpose of the study is to establish better understanding of relationships between water quality factors in the Changnyeong-Haman weir section which can provide useful information to manage Nakdong river. According to correlation analyses on COD and TOC, it revealed that the value of correlation coefficient was 0.844. Furthermore, the results from the principal component analysis categorized the water quality factors into three factor groups, the first principal factor group included COD, TOC, BOD, pH, water temperature (WT). And, it was observed that the concentration of cyanobacteria in the water body decreased, while the concentrations of the diatoms and the green algae increased after the events of rainfall.
The objective of this study was to identify the sources and to estimate the source contributions to the atmospheric TSP(total suspended particulate matter) and PM-10(particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters less than 10$\mu\textrm{m}$) concentration in Taegu area. A total of 84 samples was collected during the January to December 1999. TSP and PM-10 were collected on filters by portable air sampler, and heavy metals in TSP and PM-배 were analyzed by ICO(Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometery) after preliminary treatment. The results were follow as : First, annual average of TSP and PM-10 concentration was 123 and 69$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ respectively. The concentration of TSP and PM-10 were highest in winter season compared to other seasons. Second, the concentration of Al, Fe, Mn were higher in TSP than in PM-10, indicating that these heavy metals are generally associate with natural contributions. Third, metal combinations showed that a high correlation among concentrations of heavy metals were follows: As Al, Fe and Mn in TSP ; Ni, Cr, Cd and Pb in PM-10. Finally, Statistical analysis was performed using Principal Components Analysis(PCA) in order to find possible sources of the pollutants. The factor analysis was permitted to identify four major sources(soil/road dust resuspension, waste incineration, furl combustion, vehicular emission) in each fraction. These source accounted for at least 83, 85% of variance of TSP and PM-10 concentration in Taegu area.

To apply TMAH-based Py-MS to a field biological detection system for real-time classification of cell-type, reproducible patterns of the TMAH-based Py-MS spectra was known as a critical factor for classification but was seriously disturbed by quantity of cells injected into pyro-tube. This factor is an exterior variable that could not be complemented by improving the performance of the TMAH-based Py-MS instrument. One of idea to solve the knotty problem has been flashed from "Top-down proteomics for identification of intact microoganisms". That is, biomarker peaks are selected from complicate Py-MS spectra for intact microoganisms by tracing out their origins, based on Py-MS spectra for the featured components of different cell-types, in Top-down approach. This idea has been tested in classification of different Gram-type microoganisms. Through the analyses of spectra for the featured components - peptidoglycan and lipoteichoic acid for Gram-positive cells and lipopolysaccharide and lipid A for Gram-negative cells - with comparing to the spectra the corresponding Gram-type cells in the Top-down approach, biomarker peaks were selected to carry out PCA(Principal Component Analysis) in order to see classification of different Gram-types, resulting in significant improvement of their classification. Furthermore, weighting biomarker peaks on intact cell's spectra, based on the data for the featured components of the Gram-types, contributed to elevate classification performance.
