  • In this paper, a power loss analysis technique of a high-frequency transformer of a bidirectional DAB (Dual Active Bridge) converter is reported. To miniaturize the transformer of the dual active bridge converter, a resonant inductor was designed with an air gap included low-coupled rate state core to combine leakage inductor with the resonant inductor which is required for soft-switching. In this paper, leakage inductance and magnetizing inductance, core material, type of winding and winding method are included in the dual active bridge transformer loss analysis process to enable optimal design at the initial design stage. Transformer loss analysis for dual active bridge with a switching frequency of 200 kHz and maximum output of 5 kW was executed, and elements necessary for design based on the number of turns on the primary side were graphed while maintaining the transformer turns ratio and window area. In particular, it was possible to determine the optimal number of turns and thickness of the transformer, and ultimately, the total loss of the transformer could be estimated.

  • This paper deals with charging and persistent-current mode operating characteristics of BSCCO magnet load using high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power supply. The HTS power supply consists of two heater-triggered switches, an iron-core transformer with the primary copper winding and the secondary BSCCO solenoid, and a BSCCO magnet load. The magnet load was fabricated by double pancake winding and its inductance is about 21 mH. A hall sensor was installed at the middle of the magnet load to measure the current in the load. In order to investigate the efficient pumping characteristics, operating tests of heater-triggered switch with respect to dc heater current were carried out, and the electromagnet current was determined by considering saturation characteristics of its iron core. The saturation characteristics of charged current in the magnet load were observed with respect to various pumping periods: 12 s, 14 s, 24 s and 32 s. After charging the magnet load, the persistent current was measured. The operating characteristics of the persistent current mode were mainly determined by joint resistance and magnet load.

  • When the characteristics of a linear induction motor (LIM) are analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA), it is desirable to set the voltage source as an input. If the voltage source is set as an input in FEA, the leakage inductance and primary resistance of the equivalent circuit must be entered by direct calculation, and the magnetizing inductance and secondary reaction effects are directly considered in FEA. Exact calculation is necessary because the primary winding resistance and leakage inductance directly entered will have a significant effect on the LIM output. Therefore, in this study, we accurately calculated the primary leakage inductance and analyzed the resulting LIM characteristics. We calculated the leakage inductance using an analytical equation and FEA, and we confirmed the accuracy by comparing the results with the value experimentally calculated using a manufactured model. We also analyzed the instrument performance and thrust of the LIM as a function of the difference in the leakage inductance. Finally, we present the conclusions on the precise analysis based on the calculation of the leakage inductance.

  • Capsule endoscopes generally use primary cells as a power source due to its limited space. However, the primary cells have several limitations such as high cost, limited power and no reuse. To solve these problems, a new wireless energy transmission method is proposed. The proposed approach uses air-gap transformer concepts and LC resonance to transmit energy from transmitter(primary side) to capsule endoscopes(secondary side). The ferrite core with 3-axis winding is used to increase energy transfer efficiency regardless of direction and location. The experimental results show that the proposed method stably supplies 30mW power to secondary circuit.

  • In this paper, in order to support the peak current limiting function depending on the intensity of the fault current at the early stage of failure, a two magnetically coupled type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is proposed, which includes high-Tc superconducting (HTSC) element 1, where the existing primary and secondary coils are connected to one iron core in parallel, and HTSC element 2, which is connected to the tertiary winding using an additional iron core. The results of the experiments in this study confirmed that the two magnetic coupling type SFCL having coil 1 and coil 2 connected in parallel using dual iron cores is capable of having only HTSC element 1 support the burden of the peak current when a failure occurs. The reason for this is that although HTSC element 1 was quenched and malfunctioned because the instantaneous factor of the initial fault current was large, the current flowing to coil 3 did not exceed the critical current, which would otherwise cause HTSC element 2 to be quenched and not function. In order to limit the peak current upon fault through the sequential HTSC elements, the design should allow it to have the same value as the low value of coil 1 while having coil 3 possess a higher self-inductance value than coil 2. In addition, a short-circuit simulation experiment was conducted to examine and validate the current limiting and recovery characteristics of the SFCL when the winding ratio between coil 1 and coil 2 was 0.25. Through the analysis of the short-circuit tests, the current limiting and recovery characteristics in the case of the additive polarity winding was confirmed to be superior to that of the subtractive polarity winding.

  • We propose a 2.4-GHz CMOS power amplifier (PA) with a bypass structure to improve the power-added efficiency (PAE) in the low-power region. The primary winding of the output transformer is split into two parts. One of the primary windings is connected to the output of the power stage for high-power mode. The other primary winding is connected to the output of the driver stage for low-power mode. Operation of the high power mode is similar to conventional PAs. On the other hand, the output power of the driver stage becomes the output power of the overall PA in the low power mode. Owing to a turning-off of the power stage, the power consumption is decreased in low-power mode. We designed the CMOS PA using a 180-nm RFCMOS process. The measured maximum output power is 27.78 dBm with a PAE of 20.5%. At a measured output power of 16 dBm, the PAE is improved from 2.5% to 12.7%.

  • Instrument transformers are a safe measurement device designed to measure high voltage and large current. A current transformer(CT) is a type of instrument transformer designed to provide a current in its secondary winding proportional to the current flowing in its primary. It is commonly used in metering and protective relaying in the electrical power industry where it facilitates the safe measurement of large current. But, care must be taken that the secondary of a current transformer is not disconnected from its load while current is flowing in the primary, as this will produce a dangerously high voltage across the open secondary, and may permanently affect the accuracy of the transformer. Especially, industrial disaster such as an electric shock and/or a burn accident occurs occasionally by disregard of warning or attention. In this paper, we developed the detector for open of current transformer secondary terminal, and which was tested by the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute. Test results show that Current Transformer secondary Open Detector(CTOD) interrupted within one second electronically when the 2nd terminal of current transformer opened.

  • This paper presents the structure and performance of a new Integrated magnetics-based transformer, which can be readily adapted to zero-voltage switching full bridge dc-to-dc converters. The proposed transformer features with two paralleled primary windings and a center-tapped secondary winding. The transformer can be fabricated on standard EE or EI cores where the primary and secondary windings are placed on the outer legs while the output filter inductor is wound on the middle leg. The performance of the proposed transformer is demonstrated with a 100 kHz 720 W experimental dc-to-dc converter which recorded a 92% conversion efficiency at 12 V output voltage.

  • We have analyzed operating characteristics of hybrid-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) according to the parallel connection of secondary windings with $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}$ (YBCO) films. The turn ratio between the primary and secondary windings of each reactor was 63:21. Hybrid-type SFCL using a transformer with parallel reactors could reduce the unbalanced quench caused by differences of the critical current density between YBCO films. We found that hybrid-type SFCL having parallel connection induced simultaneous quench between the superconducting elements. The quench-starting point at this time was almost same. When the applied voltage was 200V, the limiting current in the hybrid-type SFCL with a serial connection was lowered to 34 percent than that in the SFCL with a parallel connection. In the meantime, when the voltage generated in the superconducting elements was the same, the current value in the parallel connection was 60 percent less than in the serial connection. The voltage generated in the primary winding also showed the similar behavior. In conclusion, we found that the fault current was limited more effectively in the SFCL with the serial connection but the power burden of the superconducting elements was reduced in the parallel connection.

  • A voltage transformer (VT) is used to transform a high voltage into a low voltage as an input for a metering device or a protection relay. VTs use an iron core which maximizes the flux linkage. The primary current of the VT has non-fundamental components caused by the hysteresis characteristics of the iron core. It causes a voltage drop in the winding impedances resulting in the error of the VT. This paper describes a compensation algorithm for the VT. The proposed algorithm can compensate the secondary voltage of VT by calculating the primary current from the exciting current of the hysteresis loop in the voltage transformer. In this paper, the exciting branch was divided into a non-linear core loss resistor and a non-linear magnetizing inductor. The performance of the proposed algorithm was validated under various conditions using EMTP generated data. Test results show that the proposed compensation algorithm can improve the accuracy of the VT significantly.
