  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether attachment to primary caregivers and family interaction affect rural children's social competence through self-regulation ability. To achieve this, a survey was conducted with 345 students aged 11-13 attending elementary schools in a rural area of Gyeongsang Province. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and path analysis using the AMOS 23.0 program. The main result was that rural children's self-regulation had an indirect effect on attachment with primary caregivers and family interaction through social competence. The findings of this study will contribute to designing a variety of programs that can promote the positive development of social competence among rural children.

Attitudes toward the Elderly among Nursing Students in Korea

  • Purpose. The primary purpose of this study was to reexamine underlying dimensions of attitudes toward the elderly held by undergraduate nursing students. A secondary purpose was to investigate characteristics of nursing students associated with attitudes toward elders. Methods. A survey was performed using self-report questionnaire completed by nursing students from a total of 10 nursing schools or departments each selected randomly from one province of Korea. Students' responses (N=366) were analyzed using factor analysis, correlation coefficients, t-test, and ANOVA. Results. Three attitudinal dimensions explaining $35.29\%$ of the variance were extracted: vitality, generosity and flexibility. From a neutral point of 4.0 in the range of 1 to 7, only generosity (4.47) was evaluated positively, whereas vitality (3.31) and flexibility (2.91) were evaluated negatively. The mean scores of the vitality and generosity dimensions were significantly different by students' level of communication with the elderly, experience living with the elderly, and interest in elders or in issues related to elders. Interest in elders/elder issues was the only characteristic affecting significant mean score difference in flexibility. Conclusion. Educational process should increase students' exposure to healthy elderly to modify negative attitudes toward the elderly among nursing students.

환경친화적 행동과 실천 장벽에 관한 학생과 교사의 인식 비교 (A Comparative Study on Awareness of Environment Friendly Behavior and Barriers to Implementing the Actions between Students and Environment Teachers)

  • This study was motivated to understand ways in which actors (students) perceived internal and external conditions of actions in determining responsibility of so-called environment friendly actions. To understand hidden reasons by which students conduct specific environmental actions more or less frequently may be more important and meaningful for environment teachers than to measure and know the frequency that their students do such actions. This study has been implemented by applying questionnaire survey to 752 ruddle school and high school students and 211 environment teachers. To test the hypothesis of this study that there would be significant differences in awareness of environment friendly actions and barriers to implementing those actions between students and environment teachers, frequency analysis and f-test have been conducted. Primary results of this study can be summarized as follows; It has been found that there were a number of evidences showing significant differences in awareness of environment friendly behavior between students and teachers. In term of action frequency, significant differences have been observed in 11 of the listed 20 actions. Similar resulted have been found in terms of perceived difficult, perceived effectiveness, and perceived guilty. These results seem to support an argument that the current list-making and checklist style of connecting students to so-called environment friendly actions need to be reviewed in a critical manner.

Assessing Students' Satisfaction in Public Universities in Bangladesh: An Empirical Study

  • This study aims to examine the level of students' satisfaction toward the services (i.e. accommodation facilities, transportation facilities, and recreation and sports facilities) provided by the public universities in Bangladesh. The study also aims to identify the major service factors that influence students' satisfaction in public universities in the country. A cross-sectional survey was conducted at six public universities to obtain primary data. A standardized questionnaire was distributed to a total of 500 randomly selected students to collect the data. Several statistical tools, namely, reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were employed to analyze the data. The findings revealed that recreation and sports facilities have the strongest impact on students' satisfaction in the public universities in Bangladesh. Transportation facilities also have positive and significant impact on student's satisfaction. However, the study found a negative correlation between accommodation facilities and students' satisfaction indicating that students are not satisfied with the accommodation facilities provided by the public universities. The findings of this study provide an insight about students' satisfaction that might be useful to authorities of the public universities and other higher educational institutions in designing policies for various services and facilities to be provided to their students.

대학생들의 성교육 경험에 관한 내용분석 (Content Analysis of the Experiences and the Unmet Needs for Sex Education of University Students During their Primary and Secondary Education)

  • The purpose of the study was to analyze the experiences of and the unmet needs for sex education of university students during their primary and secondary education. Development and refinement strategies of the sex education curriculum were constructed using the words of university students. The study was conducted during the second trimester of 1998 and the first trimester of 1999. and 356 male and female students were asked to submit weekly descriptive reports on the proposed issues related to sex education. The data were collected and analyzed by the researcher to present and summarize the in-depth meanings . The results were as follows: 1) The problems of the present sex education of primary and secondary education curriculum : it was revealed as too superficial and conventional: it brought about adverse effects because it was not efficient: also it was insufficient and not appropriate to the level of the students. The erroneous stereotypes of our society towards the sexuality act as barriers to effective sex education. 2) The abstract needs for sex education revealed on the analysis of adjectives used by the students were: 'honest, interesting, easy, useful, and correct' 3) The concrete needs for the sex education were: correct understanding of sexuality, establishment of the right sense of values towards sexuality, understanding of male and female sex psychology, knowledge of solutions for sexual problems 4) The developmental strategies for the sex education curriculum were structural, comprehensive, broad, and sufficient education content, concrete and honest explanations about sexuality : provision of early sex education; sex education provided by the parents ; establishment of an open environment for the sex education, graded education reflecting the developmental stages of the youngsters ; up-to-date sex education; preservation of the perspectives of the youngsters; provision of the same sex education opportunities for both girls and boys; practical use of audiovisual aides; open discussion; development of novel education methods like field trips 5) The change of knowledge, attitudes, and values towards sexuality after finishing the sex education course were: establishment of right sense of value towards sexuality ; reconfirmation of the concepts and value for life; belief of the necessity of sex education; change of attitudes towards womanhood; reinforcement of the self-conceit, consolidation of filial piety; and acquisition of the practical knowledge.

CASE 프로그램에 의한 초등학생들의 인지가속 효과 (Effects of a Cognitive Acceleration Program on Primary School Students)

  • 과학교과 내용이 요구하는 인지수준과 학생들의 인지수준이 맞지 않아 생기는 문제점을 극복하는 적극적인 대처 방안으로 학생들의 인지발달을 촉진시켜 과학교과 내용의 이해를 도모하기 위해 구안된CASE 프로그램의 효과를 조사했다. 초등학교 5학년(11세) 420명의 학생들이 연구에 참가하였으며, 같은 분량의 시간동안 실험반에서는 교육과정에 따른 과학교과 수업과 '생각하는 과학' 활동을 병행하였고, 통제반에서는 과학교과 수업만을 수행하였다. 연구 초기에 논리적 사고력 검사(SRT ll)를 이용하여 집단의 동질성을 비교하고, 2년 동안 실험반에 CASE 프로그램을 처치한 후 처치별, 성별, 인지수준별 인지가속 효과를 조사했다 2년간 지도한 결과 CASE 프로그램이 인지가속에 매우 효과적인 것(MS=16.883, F=10.360, p=.001; ES=0.40)으로 확인되었다. 특히 초기 1년 동안 인지가속에 매우 효과적인 것(MS=10.491, F=9.302, p=.002; ES=0.41)으로 나타났다 학생들의 성별에 따라 CASE 프로그램의 효과를 비교한 결과 남학생들 보다 여학생들이(ES 남:여=0.27:0.59) 좀 더 나은 효과를 보였다. 학생들의 사전 인지수준에 따른 CASE 프로그램의 효과를 분석한 결과, 전기 구체적 조작기(2A) 학생들은 중간검사에서 인지발달이 있는 것(ES=0.23)으로 나타났으며, 이러한 효과가 꾸준히 증가하여 사후검사에서는 인지발달이 아주 현저하게(ES=0.70) 나타났다 중기 구체적 조작기(2A/2B)와 후기 구체적 조작기(2B) 학생들에게서도 인지가속 효과가(ES=0.30,0.23) 나타났으나, 과도기(2B/3A)와 전조작기((2A) 학생들에게는 CASE 프로그램의 효과가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 학생들의 사후 인지수준이 형식적 조작기(3A 이상)로 상향 변화된 비율이 실험반(21.8%)이 통제반(8.6%)보다 2.5배나 높았다. 이와 같은 인지가속은 초기, 중기, 그리고 후기 구체적 조작기 학생들에게서 명백하게 나타났다. 우리나라 과학 교과내용이 요구하는 인지수준과 생들의 실제 인지수준과의 격차로 인해 생기는 과학교육의 문제점을 좀 더 적극적으로 대처하는데 CASE 프로그램과 관련된 여러 가지 자료가 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

한국과 중국의 초등영재교육의 분석 및 고찰 (A Comparative Study on Primary Gifted Education Systems in Korea and China)

  • This study was carried out to analyze primary gifted education systems in Korea and China. The results of the research are as follows : (1) The objectives of the gifted children education of two countries are same. They intend to dig out hidden talent and giftedness of gifted children. They emphasize the development of creativity in the gifted children through the various special teaching methods. (2) Korea has been doing the gifted education limitedly focused on the 4th grade students in elementary school after regular school curriculum, but China has performed gifted education from primary school to university quite systematically. (3) Korea tend to select the students based on the objective sources such as teachers' observation, recommendation, school scores, but this has limit to find out the real potential genius. China has the similar problems, but they consider of the comprehensive talented and abilities in students at school unit level. (4) Both countries have the teacher training systems for study to make more efficient programs and methods in gited education. It has been emphasized the necessity of gifted education to expand the range and target. Most of all it is very essential to train the teachers to manipulate the gifted education programs. The government should be persue the multiplicity and professionality now. So there are so many things to learn from China since they managed the gifted education in a regular curriculum of the school.

자막을 활용한 영어수업이 초등학생의 문자인지 능력과 어휘력에 미치는 효과 (Effects of Caption-Utilized English Classes on Primary School Students' Character Recognition and Vocabulary Ability)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 자막을 활용한 영어수업이 초등학생의 문자인지 능력과 어휘력에 미치는 효과를 실험연구를 통해 살펴보는 것이다. 연구 대상은 전북 지역, G 도시에 위치한 2개의 초등학교 학생으로, 자막이 포함된 동영상을 활용한 영어 수업을 받은 실험반과 자막 없이 동영상을 접한 비교반으로 구분하였다. 각 집단은 2달간 10차시의 수업을 받았으며, 이들을 대상으로 문자인지 능력과 어휘력 검사지를 통해 사전/사후 검사를 실시하고, 자막 활용이 효과를 독립표본 t-검정과 대응표본 t-검정을 통해 살펴보았다. 그 결과 문자인지 능력과 어휘력에 있어 두 집단 사이에 통계적으로 유의한 차이는 발견되지 않았으나, 실험집단의 사전, 사후 검사 결과 사이에는 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 발견되었다. 마지막으로, 연구 결과를 근거로 영어교육의 교육적 함의와 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 논의하였다.

간정격 치료가 초등학교 근시학생에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Ganjeonggyeok to Myopia Students in Primary School)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Ganjeonggyeok and eye exercise therapy in primary school students who have myopia. Methods : 76 primary school students were divided into 2 groups. Experimental group was treated with eye exercise therapy along side with Ganjeonggyeok, while control group was treated with only eye exercise therapy. We compared and analyzed the rate of recovery of eyesight after 3 months. Results & Conclusions : 1. Right eyesight of the experimental group was improved from $.59{\pm}.41$ to $.70{\pm}.48$ and it was statistically significant. Left eyesight was improved from $.63{\pm}.40$ to $.66{\pm}.45$, but it was not statistically significant. In case of control group, right eyesight was improved from $.98{\pm}.33$ to $.99{\pm}.34$, and left eyesight, from $.66{\pm}.34$ to $1.04{\pm}.44$. In both cases, the variation was not statistically significant. 2. We compared VFQ scores of each group before and after the treatment. In experimental group, the score changed from $61.54{\pm}6.8$ to $61.83{\pm}6.3$, and in control group, the score changed from $61.74{\pm}4.0$ to $60.50{\pm}.11.9$. However, there were no statistical significance in both cases. 3. Eye exercise therapy alone can help recovering eyesight. However, Ganjeonggyeok in parallel with eye exercise showed significant recovery of myopia.

제7차 초등학교 과학과 교육과정 내용의 적정성 분석 및 평가 (Analysis and Evaluation of the Content Relevance in the 7th National Primary Science Curriculum)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the content relevance of the 7th national primary science curriculum and textbooks. To fulfill the purpose of the study, we 1) analyzed the 7th national science curriculum of Korea, Californian science standards, the national science curriculum of England and Japan, and current Korean and Japanese science textbooks, 2) conducted a nationwide survey to gather opinions from students, teachers, and professors of teachers colleges about the relevance of the science curriculum and textbooks. Main findings of this study are as follows: First, the science contents at each grade level should be determined by the students' characteristics, not by an equal portion rule among physics, chemistry, biology and earth science. Second, the excessive overlapping and repetition of contents due to the spiral curriculum should be avoid. Third, the number of topics at each grade level should be reduced, and the similar topics and themes should be integrated for students' deeper understanding. Fourth, the number of science concepts and activities should be reduced to an appropriate level considering the time allotment for science classes, teachers workload, laboratory conditions, etc. Fifth, differentiated curriculum, such as in-depth and supplementary course, should be described not in science contents, but in teaching and learning strategy.
