DGGE밴드의 16S rDNA의 염기서열을 결정한 결과 (i) uncultured alpha proteobacterium, uncultured Desulfitobacterium sp., uncultured Rhodobacteraceae bacterium, Cupriavidus necator, Pseudomonas putida 등이 toluene 분해 미생물들이었고 (ii) alpha proteobacterium HTCC396이 TCE 제거미생물이고, (iii) Desulfitobacterium sp.이 PCE 분해에 관여하는 것으로 추정된다.

A new treatment system for animal waste water has been developed as an alternative to the activated sludge process. It consists of two treatments; one is operated with 7 tanks, and the other is soil and plant cultivation bed. Aerobic microorganisms are added to the influent water in the tanks where the water is aerated so that the microbes utilize the pollutants, while sedimentation removes the indigestible solids. In the secondary treatment the water, which has already received a primary treatment, is filtered through soil where it also receives treatment by soil organisms. In addition there is transpiration of water and absorption of minerals by plants. In the primary treatment BOD, SS, coliforms (E. coli), TP and total bacteria were removed 79-99%, but COD and TN were removed only 58% and 36%, respectively. In the secondary treatment removal of nutrients proceeded further, and 93-99% of pollutants were removed. The treated waters met the quality standard of discharge water in Japan except for TN, which was in too great a concentration to meet discharge standards. This problem requires further study.

Processing and smelting of copper containing sulphide concentrates result in the accumulation of impurities into various process streams. All primary copper smelters and refineries around the world produce significant amounts of slag, dust, sludge, residues and others, which contain copper and precious metals. The recovery of these valuable metals is essential to the overall economics of the smelting process. Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization of particular slag and Cottrell dusts from primary smelters and $Dor\'{e}$ furnace (TBRC) slag and Pressure Leached Anode slimes from a copper refinery have been carried out to understand the basic behind the recovery processes. Various process options have been evaluated and adapted for the treatment of slag from different smelting furnaces and Cottrell dusts as well as the intermediate products from copper refineries. Besides the hydro- or pyro-metallurgical treatments, the above mentioned physical separation options such as magnetic, gravity separation, flotation and precipitation flotation processes have been successfully identified and adapted as the possible process options to produce a Cu-rich or precious metal-rich concentrates for in-house recycling and other valued by-product for further treatment. The results of laboratory, pilot plant and production operations are presented, and incorporation of several alternative flowsheet is discussed in this paper.

A long- time aeration method was developed for purification of animal wastewater. Under repeated aereations of 4 hours on and 4 hours off, the higher removal rates were obtained which were in average of 99%, 96%, 92% and 50% for BOD, SS, total nitrogen and phosporous, respectively. In detail, the measured BOD concentrations of the influent and effluent were 2,700ppm and 40ppm while the SS concentrations in the primary chamber and of the effluent were about 3,000 and 110 ppm, respectively. Zeolite and activated carbon, applied for removing the nitrogen and phosphorous, showed a good absorption, especially zeolite for NH$_4$-N and activated carbon for NO$_3$-N and PO$_4$-P. The treatment cost per head by this method amounts to 1,923 won and it comes to 1.6% in the whole production cost. Therefore, this method is economically available with the half cost of the conventional activated sludge process.

This study uses traditional alum coagulation and sedimentation process to treat CMP wastewater from cleaning after polishing. The primary goal is to successfully recycle both solid fines and water for semiconductor manufacturing. Results indicated that CMP wastewater may be successfully treated to recover clean water and fine particles by alum coagulation. The optimum operating conditions for coagulation are as fellowing: alum dosage of 10 ppm, pH at 5, rapid mixing speed at 800 rpm, 5 min rapid mixing time, and long slow mixing time. The treated water with low turbidity and an average residual aluminum ion concentration of 0.23 ppm may be considered for reuse. The settled sludge after alum coagulation contains mainly SiO$_2$particle with a minor content of aluminum (1.7 wt%) may be considered as raw materials for glass and ceramic industry.
An extensive biological nutrient removal pilot plant study of anoxic/anaerobic/ aerobic treatment process was conducted to eastblish an optimum operational mode using primary dffluent. Two operational modes, (1) Qr/Q was 3.0 and maintaining EMLSS of 3100 mg/L in which the best operational results were obtained from previous bench scale study using synthetic wastewater (2) Qr/Q was 0.5 and EMLSS of 2200 mg/L which was compatible with the main plant, were Compared and evaluated for removal of nitrogen and/or phosphorous under field conditions. The nitrogen removal increased with increasing recycle ratios, but the phosphorous removal revealed more consistent results with 83percent removal efficiency in the second mode compared with 80 percent in the first mode. Above all, the two modes equally showed good BOD and nitrogen removals by nitrification-denitrification processes. It was also observed that no scum formed in the pilot plant and the sludge exhibited excellent settling characteristic all the time. The modified biological nutrient removal train can be adopted to the main plant without any major changes of their operational modes.
