  • In order to investigate the characteristics of flow around the intake around the intake valve exit, discharge coefficient and the velocity near the valve exit in steady state were measured using X-type hot-wire. Valve and valve seat insert used in experiment were constructed as the same shape of production engine and the flow characteristics at various flow rates and valve lifts were investigated. From the results of discharge coefficient measurements, it is observed that there exists a similarity between the flow characteristics around the production engine valve and the typical poppet valve. Measurement of the velocity at the valve exit shows that the normalized radial velocity between the primary direction of flow and the valve angle is large, but the difference becomes smaller as the flow rate increases.

  • In this paper, the test results of the combustion for 2 IAFR lean fuel models are described. The need for the low emission combustor has been issued from the concern on the increase of green house and the destruction of ozone layer. To evaluate the flow and combustion performance of newly designed 21AFR lean modules, the hydraulic tests in stereolithographic airflows models, the low pressure combustion tests in three injectors model for weak extinction and ignition and the high pressure combustion tests in single sector for NOx, SAE and efficiency are performed. The low pressure tests reveal that the governing parameters in weak extinction and ignition at atmospheric condition are prefilmer length, swirl flow rotation direction, secondary swirl angle and flow split. As a result of combustion test at high pressure, the efficiency and smoke level are satisfied with performance targets, but EINOx of 17.8 is higher than target value of 13.1 The high pressure tests show that the main parameters influenced on NOx are primary swirl angle, swirl flow rotation direction, heatshield exit angle and liner mixing hole location.

  • This paper presents some fundamental results on the dynamics of the periodic Karman wake behind a circular cylinder. The wake is treated like a dynamical system. External forcing is then introduced and its effect investigated. The main result obtained is the following. Perturbation of the wake, by controlled cylinder oscillations in the flow direction at a frequency equal to the Karman vortex shedding frequency, leads to instability of the Karman vortex structure. The resulting wake structure oscillates at half the original Karman vortex shedding frequency. For higher frequency excitation the primary pattern involves symmetry breaking of the initially shed symmetric vortex pairs. The Karman shedding phenomenon can be modeled by a nonlinear oscillator. The symmetrical flow perturbations resulting from the periodic cylinder excitation can also be similarly represented by a nonlinear oscillator. The oscillators represent two flow modes. By considering these two nonlinear oscillators, one having inline shedding symmetry and the other having the Karman wake spatio-temporal symmetry, the possible symmetries of subsequent flow perturbations resulting from the modal interaction are determined. A theoretical analysis based on symmetry (group) theory is presented. The analysis confirms the occurrence of a period-doubling instability, which is responsible for the frequency halving phenomenon observed in the experiments. Finally it is remarked that the present findings have important implications for vortex shedding control. Perturbations in the inflow direction introduce 'control' of the Karman wake by inducing a bifurcation which forces the transfer of energy to a lower frequency which is far from the original Karman frequency.

  • In the present, various methods have been employed to obtain the lesser thrust loss. Numerical simulations have been carried out for optimizing the thrust vector control system. Thrust vector control based on coflowing shear layer is an effective method to control the primary jet direction in the absence of moving parts. Thrust vector in symmetric nozzles is acquired by secondary flow injections that result to boundary layer separation. The pressure in secondary flow inlet was varied to check the deflection angle of jet flow.

  • This study aims to enhance the understanding of the surface pressure distribution around rectangular bodies, by considering aspects such as the suction pressure at the leading edge on the top and side faces when the body aspect ratio and wind direction are changed. We carried out wind tunnel measurements and numerical simulations of flow around a series of rectangular bodies (a cube and two rectangular bodies) that were placed in a deep turbulent boundary layer. Based on a modern numerical platform, the Navier-Stokes equations with the typical two-equation model (i.e., the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model) were solved, and the results were compared with the wind tunnel measurement data. Regarding the turbulence model, the results of the $k-{\varepsilon}$ model are in overall agreement with the experimental results, including the existing data. However, because of the blockage effects in the computational domain, the pressure recovery region is underpredicted compared to the experimental data. In addition, the $k-{\varepsilon}$ model sometimes will fail to capture the exact flow features. The primary emphasis in this study is on the flow characteristics around rectangular bodies with various aspect ratios and approaching wind directions. The aspect ratio and wind direction influence the type of wake that is generated and ultimately the structural loading and pressure, and in particular, the structural excitation. The results show that the surface pressure variation is highly dependent upon the approaching wind direction, especially on the top and side faces of the cube. In addition, the transverse width has a substantial effect on the variations in surface pressure around the bodies, while the longitudinal length has less influence compared to the transverse width.

  • Numerical analysis has been conducted to simulate pedestrian flow in the model of two-storied subway station. Because almost all the subway stations are two or three storied structure, simulations are conducted for the passengers those who get off the train and pass the wicket. Passenger flow analysis is very important factor to design the station and also to manage the operation of subway system. In the subway station, pedestrians move to the horizontal directions as well as vertical ones. Therefore, to consider the movement of pedestrians is necessary for the guarantee of safety and conveniency. As the up and down floors are connected with step, escalator and elevator, the entire movements in the multi-storied station should be simulated as like a 3-dimensional flow. Numerical schemes for the directional sweeping are developed to prevent the dependency on physical structure of station and to determine primary direction and secondary one. By using the developed program, we compared the simulation results of the effects of the location and size of exit and elapsed time.

  • Large Eddy Simulation(LES) has been conducted to insight interaction effects of turbulent flow and chemical reaction of a lean-Premixed swirl combustor. The unsteady turbulent flame is carefully simulated so that the motion of flow and flame can be characterized in detail. Fuel lumps escaping from the primary combustion zone move downstream and consequently produce local hot spots conveying large vortical structures in the azimuthal direction. The correlation between pressure oscillation and unsteady heat release is examined by the spatial and temporal Rayleigh parameter.

  • This study conducted numerical simulations with the purpose of analyzing the impact of variations in outlet pressure conditions under extreme temperature conditions on the fluid dynamics and performance of a check valve utilized in hydrogen refueling systems. Under the extreme temperature conditions, changes in outlet pressure conditions of the check valve were investigated to analyze velocity distributions, pressure distributions, and temperature distributions in the operational and connection regions. The analysis results indicated that changes in outlet pressure had a significant influence on the internal temperature variation of the check valve. Furthermore, due to density variations in the connection region caused by the cooling effect of excessively cooled hydrogen, a bias in the primary flow direction towards the lower part of the valve outlet was observed in the outlet area. Through a comparison of the results of the valve's inherent flow performance, represented by the flow coefficient, it was observed that when the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet was below 0.37 MPa, sufficient flow was not ensured.

  • The present study investigates the convective heat/mass transfer characteristics in wavy ducts of a primary surface heat exchanger. The effects of duct aspect ratio and flow velocity on the heat/mass transfer are investigated. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the corrugated duct sidewall are determined using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The aspect ratios of the wavy duct are 7.3, 4.7 and 1.8 with the corrugation angle of $145\Omega$. The Reynolds numbers, based on the duct hydraulic diameter, vary from 300 to 3,000. The results show that at the low Re(Re $\leq$ 1000) the secondary vortices called Taylor-Gortler vortices perpendicular to the main flow direction are generated due to effect of duct curvature. By these secondary vortices, non-uniform heat/mass transfer coefficients distributions appear. As the aspect ratio decreases, the number of cells formed by secondary vortices are reduced and secondary vortices and comer vortices mix due to decreased aspect ratio at Re$\leq$1000. At Re >1000, the effects of corner vortices become stronger. The average Sh for the aspect ratio of 7.3 and 4.7 are almost same. But at the small aspect ratio of 1.8, the average Sh decreases due to decreased aspect ratio. More pumping power (pressure loss) is required for the larger aspect ratio due to the higher flow instability.

  • In this paper, current limiter using a magnetic switching which is based on magnetic flux change in the case of fault is proposed. This current limiter consists of iron-core and three parts of coils. One is the primary coil connected to the power system. Another is the secondary coil wound to the opposite direction of the primary coil's winding. The other is the secondary of the secondary coil which is a movable copper plate winding and located below the secondary coil. In the normal state, the magnetic flux produced in the primary and secondary coils flows to the opposite directions each other and becomes to be canceled out. Therefore the voltages induced between the coils are zero. In the case of a fault, at the moment of a fault occurrence recognition, the switch connected to a secondary coil is opened and the secondary of the secondary coil is pulled out to the outside of the iron-core. Then, magnetic flux becomes to flow through the iron-core. Accordingly, the voltage is induced between the both ends of the primary coil and makes the current reduced. Therefore it is possible to cut off the circuit breaker easily with the proposed current limiter. This paper analyzes the current limiting effects and the detailed results are given.
