  • The purpose of this study was to examine the periodontal care of dental clinic patients. The subjects in this study were 213 patients who visited four different dental clinics in the region of Geoje. After a survey was conducted, the following findings were given: 1. In regard to the prevention of periodontal diseases, 52.1 percent of the patients investigated received treatment at a dental clinic when their gums were swollen or bleeding, and the way they responded to their swollen or bleeding gums was significantly different according to age, occupation(p<.01) and academic credential(p<.001). 31.0 percent got their teeth scaled to take care of their gums, and how to take care of the gums differed significantly with age, occupation, academic background(p<.001) and monthly income(p<.01). As to yearly preventive treatment frequency for periodontal diseases, 22.5 percent received treatment to prevent any possible periodontal diseases once a year, and age, educational background(p<.01) and occupation(p<.05) made a significant difference to that. By occupation, the company employees received more preventive treatment. As many as 66.7 percent intended to receive education on the prevention of periodontal diseases if there would be any chance, and gender and age(p<.001) made a significant differences to that. 2. As for oral health care habits, 52.1 percent brushed their teeth in a mixed way, up and down and right and left, and the women did that up and down more than the men. Those who were in their 30s did toothbrushing in the mixed way the most, and gender(p<.05), age(p<.05) and academic credential(p<.001) made a significant difference to that. Concerning daily mean toothbrushing frequency, 43.7 percent did that three times a day, and the women who did that three times outnumbered the men who did. The daily mean toothbrushing frequency varied significantly with gender(p<.01). By occupation and education, the professionals and better educated patients were significantly different from the others in that regard(p<.01). As to the use of an interdental brush, 57.3 percent had ever used it, and those who were better educated, who had a larger monthly income(p<01) and who were professionals(p<.001) were significantly different from their counterparts in that aspect. As to scaling experience, as many as 68.5 percent had ever had their teeth scaled, and those who were in their 30s had done that the most. Age made a significant difference to that(p<.01), and the professionals, larger income earners and better educated patients were significantly different from their counterparts in that regard(p<.001). The findings of the study justified the necessity and importance of periodontal care, and the prevention of periodontal diseases, regular dental checkup and the development of oral health education programs were required.

  • Saliva have many important functions in the maintenance of oral health. Saliva contains protective components, antibacterial enzymes, and other rubricating glycoprotein elements. When the salivary flow decreases of the salivary composition changes, a normally healthy mouth can become susceptible to caries, periodontal disease, and mucositis, and other diseases. Salivary peroxidase system acts as an antimicrobial factor in the oral cavity, having a role in the prevention of dental plaque accumulation, dental caries and gingivitis. Recently, this enzyme system has been introduced by many researchers in the form of toothpaste, mouthwash or moisturizing gel for use in patients with various disease states . The author prescribed the peroxidase system containing gel (Oralbalance) to the 18 Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) patients for 1 week and investigated the changes of the subjective symptoms, $HOSCN/OSCN^-$ levels of unstimulated whole saliva, and the salivary flow rates. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The patients reported decrease in all symptoms of BMS after the use of peroxidase system containing gel, particulary, a significantly higher decreases of dry mouth and burning symptoms. 2. Decreased $HOSCN/OSCN^-$ levels of unstimulated whole saliva were detected in the patients with BMS after the use of perosidase system containing gel for 1 week. 3. There was no difference between the flow rates of unstimulated whole saliva before and after uses of peroxidase system containing gel for 1 week.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effect of the low temperature atmospheric plasma device with needle tip designed for easy approach to the oral cavity and root canal against Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans. The antibacterial activities evaluated by measuring clear zone of agar plate smeared with each bacteria after plasma treatment. To quantify antibacterial effects, dilution plate method was used. In addition, scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used for observation of changes in bacterial morphology. As treatment time of plasma increased, the clear zone was enlarged. The death rate was more than 99%. The SEM results showed that the globular shape of bacteria was distorted. These results suggest that needle tip plasma could be an innovative device for prevention of dental caries, and treatment of apical infection and soft tissue diseases.

  • Ameloblastoma is the most common epithelial odontogenic tumor. It may show locally invasive behavior resulting in recurrence and malignancy. Therefore, appropriate diagnosis of this tumor is necessary. The aim of this study was to evaluate clinicopathological characteristics of ameloblastomas in an Iranian population. We present a 40-year retrospective study of patients diagnosed from 1971 to 2010 in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Faculty of Dentistry, Mashhad, Iran. Information gathered from patient records included age, gender, tumor location and histologic type. The frequency of odontogenic tumors among all lesions was 2.08% and ameloblastoma with 88 samples demonstrated the greatest prevalence (41.5%). Regarding gender, 60% of samples occurred in males. The mean age of studied patients was $33.02{\pm} 15.74years$ with a peak of occurrence in the third decade of life. The most frequent location of tumor was the mandibles (93.2%). Eighty five (96.6%) tumors were recorded as benign and 3 (3.4%) as malignant. Of benign tumors, 62 (72.9%), 20 (23.5%) and 3 (3.6%) cases were of conventional, unicyctic and peripheral types, respectively. In contrast to most previous studies, the most common histologic subtype in the present study was plexiform. Knowledge of the incidence of ameloblastoma and its clinicopathologic features including most common location, gender and age distribution in different ethnogeographic backgrounds is necessary for accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation is an acute paintful condition that causes severe functional limitation. So, manual reduction is the treatment of choice and should be performed as early as possible. Long-term dislocation of the TMJ that has persisted for more than 1 month is comparatively rare. This may include severe illness, neurological diseases and prolonged intensive care hospitalization with oral intubation and sedation. A joint that remains prolonged dislocated undergoes morphological change which is also true for periarticular tissue, especially in ligaments and muscles. Treatment of long-term TMJ dislocation should be different from acute TMJ dislocation, as simple reduction is difficult to achieve and it's likely to redislocate. The prevention of redislocation after reduction should be considered. This is a case report of about manual reduction of temporomandibular joint long-standing dislocation under general anesthesia.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors related to dental caries and periodontal disease in Korean adults. Methods: The subjects were 5,149 adults over 19 years old who participated in the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2012. Data were analyzed by chi-square test and logistic regression analysis using SPSS 18.0 statistical package program. The questionnaire consisted of 17 questions of independent variables and 2 kinds of dependent variables including dental caries and periodontal diseases by direct interview. The independent variables included 5 questions of general characteristics, 3 questions of health behavior, 5 questions of oral health behavior, and 4 questions of chronic diseases diagnosed by the doctors. Results: The prevalence rate of dental caries was higher in those who did not regularly work out and did not receive regular checkups including dental floss and dental brush use. The prevalence rate of periodontal diseases was higher in male adults, smokers, and those who were obese and had diabetes mellitus, poor oral health care habit without using dental floss and inter-dental brush. Conclusions: In order to prevent the dental caries in the adults, it is very important to do regular exercise and regular dental checkup. The best ways of dental caries prevention include tooth brushing after meal with use of dental floss and inter-dental brush. This study suggests that dental health promotion can be enhanced by smoking cessation, ideal body weight maintenance, timely tooth brushing after meal, and use of dental floss and inter-dental brush.

  • Background: Oral frailty is defined as the functional decline of the oral function due to aging, and it is associated with frailty and chronic disease. Most of the frailty intervention is for adults aged 65 years and older. However, early intervention for preventive disorder is most important. The objective of this study was to identify the age at which oral frailty surpass the "normal" range. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 719 adults (aged 30~89 years) residing in Gangwon province in May 2023. Risk of oral frailty was assessed using criteria from The Korean Academy of Geriatric Dentistry including oral function such as swallowing and mastication, and frailty. Frailty was assessed using the Kihon Checklist. To determine when oral frailty surpass the "normal" status, statistical analysis including chi-squared tests and multiple logistic regression analysis were performed using R (ver. 4.3.1). Results: There were 388 (54.0%) individuals who had a "normal" status risk of oral frailty. The risk of oral frailty was higher in the 50~54 age group compared to the 30~34 age group (odds ratio [OR] 0.50, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.28~0.91), after adjusting for gender, education, income, occupation, and frailty (OR 0.46, 95% CI 0.22~0.94). This means that from 50~54 years old, regardless of gender, education, income, occupation, or frailty condition, there is a distinction from the "normal" status. Conclusion: We found that intervention for oral frailty is needed starting from age 50 years. This is the stage where early indications of oral frailty become apparent. Early intervention for oral frailty can lead to a decrease in the prevalence of diseases and medical expenditure. Therefore, early intervention in middle-aged adults of oral frailty is necessary to improve the quality of life related to oral health.

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to identify the oral care status and periodontal disease of middle aged daibetic patients in Korea. Methods: The primitive data were taken from 238 diabetic people in the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES) in 2010 - 2012. The variables included general profiles(gender, age, occupied area, education, and smoking), oral care status(brushing time, brushing time, use of oral hygienic supplies, availability of oral hygienic supplies, oral examination, and recognition of oral health state), and diabetes management(morbidity period, treatment, education, and glycosylated hemoglobin levels). Results: Most of the subjects took gargling more than twice a day and it accounted for 73.5%. Oral hygienic supply users accounted for 24.8%, and most of them used floss brush. Oral examination was done in 19.3% of the respondents and 55.0% thought that their oral health status were very poor. The prevalence rate of the periodontal diseases was 46.6%. Female tended to have a higher rate of periodontal disease than the male. Oral hygienic supply users had lower rate of periodntal disease than those who did not use. Those who had poor subjective oral health status had higher prevalence rate of periodontal disease than those who did not. Conclusions: Periodontal disease is closely related to good oral care of middle aged diabetic patients. It is necessary to develop the program for the prevention of the periodontal disease for the diabetic patients.
