  • Shoplifting causes serious losses to not only stores but also to consumers and society as a whole. There need to be effective society-wide measures to control shoplifting due to its characteristic of playing the role as a stepping stone to induce more serious crimes. However, there is a lack of research on shoplifting in Korea, especially the research analyzing situational factors to suggest effective alternative measures for shoplifting prevention. Therefore, the current study surveyed teenagers, the group known to be the most frequent shoplifters, to see their perception of effectiveness of the situational crime prevention methods used in stores. The result showed that the teenagers found only some of the prevention methods effective, including CCTV, Electronic Article Surveillance(EAS), minimization of blind areas, and watchful clerks. However, factors such as the number of doors and their accessibility and presence of security guards were not perceived to be very effective. Using the result of the survey, this study suggests ways to utilize situational crime prevention methods more effectively to deter shoplifting.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted how people work, resulting in a massive shift towards working from home or remotely. Work from home has played a critical role in reducing the transmission of COVID-19 by limiting in-person interactions and reducing the density of people in office buildings. It also enabled businesses and organizations to continue operating while keeping their employees safe and healthy. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of work from home in business and organizational sectors worldwide, and it is likely to continue as a preferred mode of work even after the pandemic is over. This shift towards working from home has not only impacted the way people work but also has significant implications for urban development, transportation, and the environment. This study intends to develop measures for addressing potential physical and mental health issues among remotely working employees. Additionally, it identifies the major influencing factors of home workers' health hazards and proposes improvement measures that can be applied to working from home, along with existing laws and prevention methods.

  • With the recent diversification and complication of buildings, the functions of building are also developing. As much as the development of buildings, the machine or equipment used for them is also developing. Thus, all sorts of domestic/foreign industrial facilities and fire stations in the whole nation are using the electric shutter that could meet the insulation just like the exterior wall of general buildings, for bringing-in/storage and crime prevention/fire prevention. Currently, various types of electric shutters are used. Such wrong operation and poor management are causing many panel-falling accidents. This study researched the reduction of electric shutter panel-falling risk by reviewing the domestic/foreign laws and standards, and researching the new safety equipment. First, the causes for falling and accident types were drawn by analyzing the cases of electric shutter accidents. After that, a checklist as the measures for reducing the falling of electric shutter in building was suggested by analyzing the items for the inspection of electric shutter.

  • Breast cancer is the most common in women worldwide, with some 5-10% of all cases due to inherited mutations of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Obesity, hormone therapy and use of alcohol are possible causes and over-expression of leptin in adipose tissue may also play a role. Normally surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy allow a good prognosis where screening measures are in place. New hope in treatment measures include adjuvant therapy, neoadjuvant therapy, and introduction of mono-clonal antibodies and enzyme inhibitors.

  • Tobacco is a well known cause of death worldwide. With existing comprehensive laws and various other measures for tobacco control, the mortality and morbidity due to tobacco usage have unfortunately not been reduced. A large number of tobacco users have altered their pattern of tobacco use after the gutka ban. Traditional gutka is sold in the open market in a pre-mixed format. Manufacturers are supplying pan masala and tobacco in separate pouches as there is no restriction for sale of pan masala and tobacco individually in many states. Although most of the population is aware of the health hazards of tobacco, it is necessary to develop an effective structured strategy. Tobacco control programs need to be strengthened by separate tobacco control measures at various levels.

  • It has been generally accepted that nuclear power (NPP) is suiable for power supply in korea because of its economical profits and pollution-free energy. When designing or operating a NPP. The main points to be home in mind are the hazards of and protection against an uncontrolled release of the large quantities of radioactiv substances which are always generated in a nuclear reactor while it is in iperation. Multiple independent safety systems are provided which should prevent this from occurring. Thus fire prevention measures in NPP follow the “Defense-in-depth” concept. This study aims to suggest the fire prevention measures and to demonstrate information which is needed for NPP planning and its safety assessment. The findings of this study can be used as useful data for fire protection plannings at the first phase of NPP design.
