The surge in the oil prices, increasing global population, climate change, and waste management problems are the major issues which have led to the development of biofuels from lignocellulosic wastes. Cellulosic or second generation (2G) bioethanol is produced from lignocellulosic biomass via pretreatment, hydrolysis, and fermentation. Pretreatment of lignocellulose is of considerable interest due to its influence on the technical, economic and environmental sustainability of cellulosic ethanol production. In this study, furniture waste sawdust was subjected to alkaline peroxide (H2O2) for the production of reducing sugars. Sawdust was pretreated at different concentrations from 1-3% H2O2 (v/v) loadings at a pH of 11.5 for a residence time of 15-240 min at 50, 75 and 90 ℃. Optimum pretreatment conditions, such as time of reaction, operating temperature, and concentration of H2O2, were varied and evaluated on the basis of the amount of total reducing sugars produced. It was found that the changes in the amount of lignin directly affected the yield of reducing sugars. A maximum of 50% reduction in the lignin composition was obtained, which yielded a maximum of 75.3% total reducing sugars yield and 3.76 g/L of glucose. At optimum pretreatment conditions of 2% H2O2 loading at 75 ℃ for 150 min, 3.46 g/L glucose concentration with a 69.26% total reducing sugars yield was obtained after 48 hr. of the hydrolysis process. Pretreatment resulted in lowering of crystallinity and distortion of the sawdust after the pretreatment, which was further confirmed by XRD and SEM results.
The aim of this study was to examine optimal induction method for carpospore release from Agarophyton vermiculophyllum cystocarps for seedling production. We tested the effects of environmental factors on carpospore release by using five different induction methods; spontaneous, desiccation, low temperature, desiccation+low temperature, and osmotic shock. Also, carpospores release was estimated at three temperatures (20, 25, and 30℃), and then under combinations of three day lengths (8, 12, and 16h) and two irradiances (30 and 60 μmol photons m-2 s-1), after pretreatment at desiccation+low temperature for 2 hr. The number of carpospores released was between 113 ~ 682 spores /cystocarp/day and it was maximal in the desiccation+low temperature treatment. Optimal environmental conditions for carpospore release of A. vermiculophyllum were 25℃, 16 h, and 60 μmol photons m-2 s-1. The present results suggest that massive carpospores for seedling production of A. vermiculophyllum could be obtained under a combination of 25℃, 16 h, and 60 μmol photons m-2 s-1 after pretreatment in the desiccation+low temperature.
Lignocellulosic biomass has recalcitrant characteristics against chemical and biological conversion due to its structural heterogeneity and complexity. The pretreatment process to overcome these recalcitrant properties is essential, especially for the biochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass. In recent years, pretreatment methods using ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as the green solvent has attracted great attention because of their advantages such as easy recovery, chemical stability, temperature stability, nonflammability, low vapor pressure, and wide liquids range. However, there are some limitations such as high viscosity, poor economical feasibility, etc. to be solved for practical use. This paper reviewed the research activities on the pretreatment effect of various ILs including DESs and their co-solvents with organic solvents on the enzymatic saccharification efficiency of lignocellulosic biomass and the nanocellulose preparation from the pretreated products.
Pretreatment of wastepaper using aqueous glycerol under high pressure was studied to enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis. The pretreatment was conducted over a wide range of conditions including temperatures of $150{\sim}170^{\circ}C$, sulfuric acid concentrations of 0.5~1.5%, and reaction times of 30~90 minutes. After the effect of glycerol concentration on the pretreatment performance was investigated, 70% glycerol was selected. As glycerol concentration was increased, higher digestibility was achieved due to higher lignin removal. The optimum condition was found to be around $160^{\circ}C$, 1%, and 60 minutes. At this condition, 60% and 35% of hemicellulose and lignin, respectively, were removed, while only 5% of cellulose was lost. The enzymatic digestibility was 76%, meaning that 73% of the glucan present in the initial substrate was recovered as glucose after enzymatic hydrolysis. Also, it was found that the temperature and acid concentration than the reaction time were more strongly related to the compositional removals and enzymatic digestibility.
In this work, the effect of hybrid salts precipitation-nanofiltration (SP-NF) process on the scale deposits in thermal and membrane desalination processes has been studied. The analysis was carried out to study the scale formation from the Arabian Gulf seawater in MSF and RO reference processes by changing the percentage of pretreatment from 0 to 100%. Four different SP-NF configurations were suggested. A targeted Top Brine Temperature (TBT) of $130^{\circ}C$ may be achieved if 30% portion is pretreated by SP and/or NF processes. As a rule of thumb, each 1% pretreatment portion increases the reference TBT of $115^{\circ}C$ by $0.6^{\circ}C$. For both MSF and RO, parallel pretreatment of certain percentage of the feed by SP and the rest by NF, showed the lowest scale values. The case showed the best values for sulfate scale prevention and the highest values of increasing the monovalent ions relative to the divalent scale forming ions. Sulfate scale is significant in MSF process while carbonate scale is significant in RO. Salt precipitation was suggested because it is less costly than nanofiltration, but nanofiltration was used here because it is efficient in sulfate ions removal.
This research was to investigate the polyester preparation using waste ethylene glycol (EG) generated from the wastepaper pretreatment process. Waste EG was obtained from using EG five times repeatedly in the pretreatment of wastepaper. The hydroxyl value of the waste EG was 441 mg KOH/g and its composition was 0.68% cellulose, 6.5% hemicellulose, 6.1% lignin, and 86.7% EG. Maleic acid was used as carboxylic acid. The effect of reaction temperature and time except carboxyl group/hydroxyl group ratio on the crosslinkage of the prepared polyester was marginal. Citric acid, lithium hydroxide and dicumyl peroxide were used as additive or catalyst to enhance the crosslinkage of polyester. Among them, 10% of citric acid was found to be most effective. The crosslinkage was 86% when the polyester was prepared at an optimum condition such as $130^{\circ}C$ and 15 minutes, 1.5 of C/H ratio, and 10% of citric acid, and its insoluble percentage in boiling water for 6 hours was 47%. The weight loss of the prepared polyester was approximately 40% when it was buried in damp soil for 5 months, indicating that it is readily biodegradable. This results can provide some information for future development of wastepaper pretreatment by organic solvent.
In this study, dilute acid pretreatment was operated using small-diameter Quercus mongolica for evaluating the yield change of furfural and levulinic acid depending on pretreatment factors. The dilute acid pretreatment was conducted depending on reaction temperature ($140-180^{\circ}C$), reaction time (10-30 min), and sulfuric acid concentration (0-2%, w/w). Then, glucose, XMG (xylose + mannose + galactose), furfural, and levulinic acid contents in the liquid hydrolyzate were measured and analyzed after pretreatment. Glucose content increased to 16.02% as reaction temperature, reaction time, and sulfuric acid concentration increased, but it decreased at the sulfuric acid concentration of 2% (reaction temperature: > $170^{\circ}C$, reaction time: > 20 min). On the other hand, reaction temperature had a strong influenced on XMG content, and XMG content decreased to 1.63% through increasing of reaction temperature and sulfuric acid concentration, but XMG content was less affected by changes of reaction time. Furfural content increased with the increase of reaction temperature, reaction time, and sulfuric acid concentration, and maximum furfural content was 7.61% (reaction temperature: $180^{\circ}C$, reaction time: 20 min, sulfuric acid concentration: 1%) based on a weight of raw material, while furfural content was dropped in more severe condition than in maximum furfural content condition. Levulinic acid content also increased with higher reaction temperature, reaction time, and sulfuric acid concentration. Especially, the sharp increase of levulinic acid content was observed above $170^{\circ}C$, and maximum levulinic acid content was 10.98% (reaction temperature: $180^{\circ}C$, reaction time: 30 min, sulfuric acid concentration: 2%). However, less than 1% of furfural and levulinic acid content was obtained in non-acidic catalyst condition that in whole conditions of reaction temperature and reaction time.
The green algae have cellulose as a main structural component of their cell wall and the cellulose content in green algae is much higher than other marine algae such as brown algae and red algae. Furthermore, green algae do not contain lignin in their cell wall and store starch as food in their plastids. Thus, it was investigated that the effect of hydrothermal pretreatment process utilizing microwave irradiation for Ulva pertusa Kjellman, a division of green algae, which is expected to be utilized for bioenergy production, on the enzymatic hydrolysis. The hydrothermal temperature have an effect on the pretreatment of Ulva pertusa Kjellman, but the effect of power of microwave irradiation is negligible. The rate of enzymatic hydrolysis was increased as the hydrothermal temperature increased until $140^{\circ}C$. The enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated Ulva pertusa Kjellman under the optimum pretreatment conditions (50 W of microwave irradiation power and $150^{\circ}C$ of hydrothermal temperature) with cellulase, ${\alpha}$-amylase, and Novozyme 188 having ${\beta}$-glucosidase acitivity resulted in the saccharification of 96 wt% of total carbohydrate in Ulva pertusa Kjellman during 3 hrs, while it took 24 hrs for the enzymatic hydrolysis of untreated Ulva pertusa Kjellman. It confirmed that the hydrothermal pretreatment was effective on Ulva pertusa Kjellman for the enzymatic hydrolysis.
This study was conducted to elucidate extraction efficiency by microwave technique in comparison with sonication technique for extraction of insecticide residue in pear. In the analysis of the extraction efficiency of microwave for a pear spiked with imidacloprid, the extraction efficiency by microwave power of 300 W with extraction temperature of $80^{\circ}C$, heating time of 1 to 3 minute was shown to be similar with the extraction time 20 minutes by sonication. The optimal condition. in consideration of economical condition and treatment time, for microwave extraction of imidacloprid in the pear were 300 watts of power supply, $100^{\circ}C$ of extraction temperature, 1 minute of heating time and 10 mL of acetone volume. A new microwave vessel was developed to rapidly process the sample of the insecticide imidacloprid residues in the pear. This vessel was designed to include a reaction chamber and a filtration equipment, and a gathering chamber. The system could curtail a pretreatment time to 21 minutes than sonication and 7.9 minutes than the previous microwave vessel.
Studies were carried out to investigate physicochemical properties of taro during the pretreatment process of making Toranbyung. Seventeen kinds of amino acids were found in taro. Aspartic acid and glutamic acid were most plentiful among those amino acids. Essential amino acids were about 42.7% of the total amino acids. Sulfur containing amino acids, mehtionine and cystine were about 2.7% The amylograph indicated that the initial temperature triggering gelatinization of both rice flour mixed with taro and glutinous rice flour mixed with taro increased as the amount of taro increased. But the maximum viscosity of rice flour mixed with taro did not increase as the amount of taroincreased while the maximum viscosity of glutinous rice flour mixed with taro increased as the amount of taro increased. And the peak temperature of both rice flour mixed with taro and glutinous rice flour miced with taro increased as the amount of taro increased. The alkali degree of insoluble ash was higher than that of soluble ash. Glutinous rice dough had more total sugar than rice dough. Yellowness of rice dough was higher than that of glutinous rice dough.
