  • In this paper, chitosan was suggested for using as a replacement for sodium alginate in the pretreatment print paste for digital ink-jet printing for cotton fabric. Pretreatment print pastes prepared from the mixture of chitosan and acetic acid with the appropriate viscosity gave satisfactory prints on the cotton fabric. Chitosan-treated cotton fabrics were digitally ink-jet printed with four different colors and the color fastness rating of the printed fabrics was satisfactory. Experimental results revealed the possibility of pre-treating the cotton with chitosan to replace the sodium alginate normally present in the pretreatment print paste recipe.

  • This study was conducted to find the optimum pretreatment method to improve the quality of Pleurotus eryngii pickled with the fermented soybean paste. Blanching(70 , 10min), salting(5%, 20 , 72hr) and drying(50 , 3hr) were used as pretreatment methods. The moisture loss of the mushrooms during pickling was accelerated more by salting and drying. Salinity increase was retarded by salting. Surface and internal browning of the mushrooms were suppressed by blanching. Hardness tended to increase sharply until 20 days of pickling and then slowly decreased. In the sensory evaluation, mushrooms pickled for 40 days were scored as the highest. Blanching was a superior treatment compared to the others in term of color, taste, flavor, texture and overall acceptability.

  • Fernbraken is a popular and well-known wild grass, but the physiochemical properties of Korean Traditional pickling (Jangachi) during aging have been little reported. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the physiochemical properties of Fernbraken Jangachi treated with a soybean sauce mixture for 6 weeks (1st pretreatment) as well as fermented with soybean paste, red hot pepper paste and soybean sauce for 7 weeks. Total polyphenol contents, acidity, salinity, sweetness (Brix), and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol of Fernbraken Jangachi all increased with aging period. On the other hand, pH and total acidity of Fernbraken Jangachi did not change much. Among the three kinds of Jangachies, Jangachi fermented with soybean sauce showed 2 fold higher salinity and total acidity levels compared to the others. Therefore, the physiochemical properties of Fernbraken Jangachi were dependent on the pickling properties, such as soybean paste, hot pepper paste or soybean sauce, and these properties maintained a certain level after 5~6 weeks of aging. Further, proper aging period for Fernbraken Jangachi was suggested as 10 weeks.

  • This study examined the effect of pretreated sandfish Arctoscopus japonicus meat as a surimi complex for preparing sandfish flavored fish paste. To prepare the sandfish-flavored paste, fine chopped sandfish meat including backbone was added in a ratio of 0 to 50 wt.% to thawed Alaska pollock Theragra chalcogramma surimi to make a mixed surimi gel. To prepare the sandfish-flavored paste, the mixed surimi was ground with salt using a silent cutter, mixed with starch and stabilizers 0.2% transglutaminase and gluconolactone 0.3%, stuffed in a rectangular container, left for 3 h at $25^{\circ}C$, cooked in hot water for 30 min at $90^{\circ}C$, and finally chilled for 20 min at $4^{\circ}C$. The effects of the pretreatment of sandfish meat were investigated by analyzing the quality of the paste produced. The proximate composition of FP (fish paste containing 40% steam-cooked sandfish meat and 0.3% gluconolactone) was moisture 76.1%, crude protein 12.0%, crude fat 3.8%, carbohydrate 6.1%, and ash 2.0%. The major minerals in FP were Na (23.77 mg/L), Mg (1.46 mg/L), Zn (1.04 mg/L), and Fe (0.41 mg/L), and the major free amino acids were taurine, anserine, alanine, and glutamic acid. The monounsaturated fatty acid content of FP was 566.22 mg%, and the polyunsaturated fatty acid content was 498.43 mg%. The n-3 fatty acid content was 398.01 mg%, and C20:5n-3 (218.85 mg %) was a major component.

  • A few of polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) membranes and PTFE fine powders were analyzed to chooce an optimum resin. The bi-axial stretching process was developed to set up the foundation of the preparation process and control the pore size and porosity of PTFE membrane. The pretreatment of PTFE fine powder used in the preparation process for PTFE was needed. The mixing of additives, the ripening of mixture, paste extrusion process of ripening powder, calendering process and the bi-axial process were conducted for controlling pore size, porosity and thckness of membrane. The aftertreatment which strengthened the mechanical properties was necessary. The control of pore size and porosity of the membrane were determined. The ratio of PTFE fine powder and additives at the paste extrusion process, the ripening time, the ripening temperature and the parameters of temperature and pressure at the paste extrusion process were optimized.

  • A single use, screen-printed sensor for the measurement of liquid phase ethanol was developed and its electrochemical performance was investigated. Disposable type edthanol sensor was fabricated by serially screen printing the carbon paste, silverd pasted and insulator inlon a polyester substrate to pattern working and reference electrode sites and electrical contact. Alcohol dehydrogenase(ADH) or alcohol oxidase(AOD) together with appropriate electron transfer mediators was immobilized on the working electrode. To improve the sensitivity and reproducibility of carbon paste electrode, some pretreatment procedures were applied and their resultant electrochemical performance was examined. The disposable type electrochemical ethanol sensor developed in this study conveniently determines the ethanol in liquid samples such as blood and in fermentation process.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the microleakage of a pit and fissure sealant at the tooth-restoration interface. One hundred and sixty-seven extracted permanent and deciduous teeth were used and some simple mechanical pretreatment were done before etching. The degree of microleakage was assessed by $Ca^{45}$ after 24 hours, and 2 months. The results were as follows: 1. Among total 167 teeth, 53 teeth (32%) were demonstrated the microleakage. 2. After 2 months the leakage was increased from 22 percent to 35 percent in permanent teeth, and from 32 percent to 43 percent in primary teeth. 3. The group treated by fluoride paste was demonstrated the largest leakage, 50 percent in primary teeth and 33 percent in permanent teeth. There are more leakage in primary teeth (38%) than permanent teeth (28%).

  • A mercury ion-sensitive carbon-paste electrode (CPE) was constructed with l-sparteine. Mercury (II) ion was chemically deposited by the complexation with l-sparteine onto the CPE. The surface of CPEs was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and anodic stripping voltammetry in an acetate buffer solution, separately. Exposure of CPEs to acid solution could regenerate surface and reuse it for deposition. In 5 deposition/measurement/regeneration cycle, the response was reproducible and in licnear up to $2.0\;{\times}\;10^{-6}$ M with linear sweep voltammetry. In case of using the differential pulse technique, we have obtained the linear response up to $7.0 {\times}10^{-7}$ M with relative standard deviation of ${\pm}5.1$%. The detection limit was $5.0{\times}10^{-7}$ M for 20 minutes of the deposition. We have investigated the interference effect of various metal ions, which are expected to form the complex with ligand. Silver (I) ion of these has interfered with the analysis of Hg (II) ions. However, pretreatment of the silver (I) ion with potassium chloride led to no interference on the analysis of mercury ions in aqueous solution.

  • A method of detecting lead was developed using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) with DNA-carbon nanotube paste electrode (CNTPE). The results indicated a sensitive oxidation peak current of lead on the DNA-CNTPE. The curves were obtained within a concentration range of 50 $ngL^{-1}-20mgL^{-1}$ with preconcentration time of 100, 200, and 400 sec at the concentration of $mgL^{-1}$, ${\mu}gL^{-1}$, and $ngL^{-1}$, respectively. The observed relative standard deviation was 0.101% (n = 12) in the lead concentration of 30.0 ${\mu}gL^{-1}$ under optimum conditions. The low detection limit (S/N) was pegged at 8 $ngL^{-1}$ ($2.6{\times}10^{-8}M$). Results showed that the developed method can be used in real-time assay in vivo without requiring any pretreatment and pharmaceutical samples, and food samples, as well as other materials requiring water source contamination analyses.
