  • An object oriented numerical analysis program of axial-flexural elements and the step-by-step method (SSM) has been developed to analyze concrete long-term behaviors of structures constrained internally and externally. The results of the numerical analysis for simple and continuous prestressed (PS) concrete box and composite girders, pre-cast slab of continuous steel composite girder, and simple preflex composite girder show that the adjusting coefficient decreases by increasing constraint. The loss rates of pre-tension force were not sensitive but those of pre-compression force were increased rapidly by decreasing adjusting coefficient. This indicates that the design based on the loss rate of pre-tension can over-estimate the pre-compression force in a concrete section constrained internally and externally. The adjusting coefficients which satisfy results of the numerical analysis are 0.35~0.95, and it can be used as an index of constraint of concrete long-term deformation. The adjusting coefficient 0.5 of Bridge Design Specifications can under-estimate residual stress of PS concrete slab, and the coefficient 0.7 or 0.8 of LRFD Bridge Designing Specifications can under-estimate the loss rates of continuous PS concrete girders. The adjusting coefficient of hybrid structures should be less then 0.4.

  • The stiffness matrix of circularly curved frame elements including the warping effects is formulated by the solutions of vlasov's differential equations, and the procedure for the elastic static analysis of curved girder systems by the displacement method is presented. The validity of this method has been demonstrated by comparing the analysis results with other solutions. And if the tangential lines of the two frame element axes connected at any nodal point coincide, the transformation to the global coordinate system can be omitted when we analyze the structures consisting of circularly curved elements. The theory introduced in this thesis can be applied with sufficient accuracy to the structures built up with horizontally circular curved frame elements which have closed or open cross sections and are symmetric to the axis perpendicular to the plane of the curvature, such as prestressed concrete box girder bridges.

  • This paper studies the behavior of joints in steel-PSC (prestressed concrete) hybrid beams, which is necessary for the application of hybrid beams to spliced girder bridges, and proposes a new type of joint with improved construction convenience and structural behavior. In the proposed joint, perfobond rib shear connectors are attached to the upper and lower plates, which are expanded from the steel girders and located between the steel girder and the PSC girder. The experimental tests were performed on hybrid beams with the suggested joint. The results showed that all the beams had similar ultimate strengths and failure modes, due to the failure of their PSC parts. The composite action of the perfobond ribs was verified by examining the initial stiffness and cracks of the test beams. In addition, the test beams showed a higher degree of ultimate strength than the beams with stud shear connectors in the joints that had been previously studied. Thus, the proposed joint is effective for the steel-PSC hybrid beam.

  • As the high speed railroad line increases, researches on developing a more economic high speed railroad bridge system have been actively conducted. In this paper, a new type of prestressed concrete girder based on the bi-prestressing technique, which can introduce additional prestress, is presented. The additional prestress can be introduced using a wedge-shaped pin bar into the upper part of the girder section. The applicability of the new girder technique to the high speed railroad bridge is verified via the dynamic stability analysis. Dynamic moving load analyses using the KTX train load are conducted on bridge systems with the span lengths of 30m, 35m, and 40m, respectively. The results of the analysis show that all bridge systems satisfy the limits prescribed in the design specifications to ensure structural stability, driving safety, and ride quality.

  • This study entailed an investigation of a tensile stress measurement method for prestressed concrete (PSC) tendons by utilizing external magnetization. The target of this study are PS structures that have been constructed and in use. An optimal external magnetization based elasto-magnetic (EM) sensor was designed using finite element analysis considering various factors, such as coil arrangement and size, that could influence the PS tendons inside the PSC girder. The residual tensile stress resulting from the external magnetization of the girder was then determined. Further, theoretical verification was performed using the numerical and material data used in the finite element analysis for sensor design. The calculated values of strength of magnetization at the target location were matched with the finite element analysis results. Thus, the designed sensor and the feasibility of magnetizing the tendons inside the PSC I-girder using an EM sensor were validated.

  • Member force, strain and stress distribution of a section are obtained for prestressed steel and concrete(PSSC) composite bridge subjected to dead and live load in order to interpret the effect of prestressing and deformation of tendon. The stress and strain distribution and moment capacity are obtained for both noncomposite and composite section and for allowable stress limit state, yield limit state and strength limit state. Reliability analysis is conducted after assuming limit states for deflection, stress and flexural strength. Comparing that the reliability index for stress is near 0 for example section which is designed to satisfy the allowable stress exactly, the reliability indexes for deflection and flexural strength are high. Reliability of PSSC girder which is designed based on allowable stress of bridge design code is high for deflection and flexural strength.

  • Bursting stress in anchorage zone of post tension girder can be estimated based on Guyon's equation. The major parameters in calculating bursting stress are prestressing force and the distance ratio between concrete edge and anchorage plate. Although Guyon's equation can be applied to calculate bursting stress for rectangular typed as well as circular typed plate, there is some limitation of accuracy due to 2 dimensional analysis. Therefore this study is proposed to suggest a bursting stress equation based on 3 dimensional finite element method.

  • The dynamic responses of a pier-pile-soil system subjected to a barge/flotilla collision are analyzed. A coupled high-speed train and bridge system with a damaged pier after barge/flotilla collision is established by taking the additional unevenness of the track induced by the damaged pier as the self-excitation of the system. The whole process of a CRH2 high-speed train running on the 6×32 m simply-supported PC (prestressed concrete) box-girder bridge with a damaged pier is simulated as a case study. The results show that the lateral displacements and accelerations of the bridge with a damaged pier are much greater than the ones before the collision. The running safety indices of the train increase with the train speed as well as with the number of barges in the flotilla. In flotilla collision, the lateral wheel/rail forces of the train exceed the allowable values at a certain speed, which influences the running safety of the trains.

  • The prestressing force has not been managed after construction nevertheless it is one of the importrant factors that maintain the structural safety of PSC girder bridges. The prestressing force is just measured during construction using jacking device and after that, it can not be managed practically. For this reason, this study investigated the measurements of prestress using embedded sensors that can be available now with an ultimate goal to propose smart prestressed girders that can measure the prestress from the birth to the end of service life. 4 types of sensors were installed on the small prestressed girders, and the applicability and the accuracy of those sensors were tested while the prestress was applied to the girders. The results show that a center-hole type loadcell has a tendency to measure a prestressing force higher than a reference value, especially when it is loaded with an eccentricity. a EM sensor shows several advantages that has a good practical accuracy, that can be installed anyplace along the tendons.

  • Pretension PSC (Prestressed Concrete) members are subjected to a certain limit of size as they are generally produced in the off-site plant and transferred to the site due to the large scale of the product on system. In this study, a portable pretensioning production system has been developed, which allow us to apply the pretension method on site. Considering that a 50m span PSC girder using the pretension method requires a pressing device to endure a large jacking force, the portable pretension production system has to ensure safety against such a large pretension jacking force. In this study, the portable pretensioning system to produce a 50m span pretension girder was manufactured by using CFT (Concrete Filled steel Tube) members. In order to understand the stability of the system and the behavior of the elements, a static loading test was conducted and the stability of the proposed portable pretensioning production system was confirmed. The developed portable pretension system was applied to several construction sites and was investigated the problems on site. During the pretension girder and slab members that was producted by this pretension system in construction site, it has be found the several advantages such as simple fabrication processes, reduction of prestress-loss, and a decrease of 15% compared with the fabrcation cost of post-tension girder. After due consideration of the problems, this portable pretension system will be improved.
