Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has been popularly applied and used in the last several decades to simulate turbulent boundary layer in the numerical domain. A fully developed turbulent boundary layer has also been applied to predict the complicated wake flow behind bluff bodies. In this study we aimed to generate an artificial turbulent boundary layer, which is based on an exponential correlation function, and generates a series of realistic three-dimensional velocity data in two-dimensional inlet section which are correlated both in space and in time. The results suggest its excellent capability for high Reynolds number flows. To make an effective generation, a hexahedral mesh has been used and Cholesky decomposition was applied to possess suitable turbulent statistics such as the randomness and correlation of turbulent flow. As a result, the flow characteristics in the domain and fluctuating pressure near the wall are very close to those of fully developed turbulent boundary layers.

The piezoelectric bimorph film, which, as an actuator, can generate more effective displacement than the usual PVDF film, is used to control the turbulent boundary-layer flow. The change of wall pressures inside the turbulent boundary layer is observed by using the multi-channel microphone array flush-mounted on the surface when actuation at the non-dimensional frequency $f_b^+$:=0.008 and 0.028 is applied to the turbulent boundary layer. The wall pressure characteristics by the actuation to produce local displacement are more dominantly influenced by the size of the actuator module than the actuation frequency. The movement of large-scale turbulent structures to the upper layer is found to be the main mechanism of the reduction in the wall- pressure energy spectrum when the 700$700{\nu}/u_{\tau}$-long bimorph film is periodically actuated at the non- dimensional frequency $f_b^+$:=0.008 and 0.028. The biomorph actuator is triggered with the time delay for the active forcing at a single frequency when a 1/8' pressure-type, pin-holed microphone sensor detects the large-amplitude pressure event by the turbulent spot. The wall-pressure energy in the late-transitional boundary layer is partially reduced near the convection wavenumber by the open-loop control based on the large amplitude event.

This paper investigated the characteristics of the turbulent incompressible flow past the orifice ring in an axi-symmetric pipe. The flow field was the turbulent pulsatile flow for Reynolds number of $2{\times}10^{5}$ which was defined based on the maximum velocity and the pipe diameter at the inlet, with oscillating frequence $(f_{os})=1/4{\pi}$ which was considered as quasi-steady state frequence. In the present investigation, finite analytic method was used to solve the governing equations in Navier Stokes and turbulent transport formulations. Particularly at high Reynolds number and low oscillation frequency, the effects of orifice ring on the flow were numerically investigated. The separation zone behind the orifice ring during the acceleration phase was found to be decreased. However, during the deceleration phase, the separation behind the orifice ring for pulsatile flow continuously grow to a size even larger than that in steady flow. The pressure drop in steady flow was found to be constant and always positive while for pulsatile flow the pressure drop change with time. And large turbulent kinetic energy, dissipation rate were found to be located in the region where the flow passes through the orifics ring. The maximum turbulent kinetic energy, generally occurs along the shear layer where the velocity gradient is large.

Recently, numerous modifications of low Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ model have boon carried out with the aid of DNS data. However, the previous models made in this way are too intricate to be used practically. To overcome this shortcoming, a new low Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ model has boon developed by considering the distribution of turbulent properties near the wall. This study proposes the revised a turbulence model for prediction of turbulent flow with adverse pressure gradient and separation. Nondimensional distance $y^+$ in damping functions is changed to $y^*$ and some terms modeled for one dimensional flow in $\epsilon$ equations are expanded into two or three dimensional form. Predicted results by the revised model show an acceptable agreement with DNS data and experimental results. However, for a turbulent flow with severe adverse pressure gradient, an additive term reflecting an adverse pressure gradient effect will have to be considered.
In this study, a computational method for wall shear stress combined with an implicit direct-forcing immersed boundary method is presented. Near the immersed boundaries, the sub-grid stress is determined by a wall model in which the wall shear stress is directly calculated from the Lagrangian force on the immersed boundary. A coupling mathematical model of the transition process for a model Francis turbine comprising turbulent flow and rotating rigid guide vanes is established. The spatiotemporal distributions of pressure, velocity, vorticity and turbulent quantity are gained with the transient process; the drag and lift coefficients as well as other forces (moments) are also obtained as functions of the attack angle. At the same time, analysis is conducted of the characteristics of pressure pulsation, velocity stripes and vortex structure at some key parts of flowing passage. The coupling relations among the turbulent flow, the dynamical force (moment) response of blade and the rotating of guide vane are also obtained.
Conical vortices generated at the corner regions of large-span flat roofs have been investigated by using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. Mean and instantaneous vector fields for velocity, vorticity, and streamlines were measured at three visual planes and for two different flow angles of $15^{\circ}$. The results indicated that conical vortices occur when the wind is not perpendicular to the front edge. The location of the leading edge corresponding to the negative peak vorticity and maximum turbulent kinetic energy was found at the center of the conical vortex. The wind pressure reaches the maximum near the leading edge roof corner, and a triangle of severe suctions zone appears downstream. The mean pressure in uniform flow is greater than that under turbulent flow condition, while a significant increase in the fluctuating wind pressure occurs in turbulent streams. From its emergence to stability, the shape of the vortex cross-section is nearly elliptical, with increasing area. The angle that forms between the vortex axis and the leading edge is much smaller in turbulent streams. The detailed flow structures and characteristics obtained through FLUENT simulation are in agreement with the experimental results. The three dimensional (3-D) structure of the conical vortices is clearly observed from the comprehensive arrangement of several visual planes, and the inner link was established between the vortex evolution process, vortex core position and pressure distribution.
The steady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional numerical analysis was carried out to evaluate turbulent models on the aerodynamic performance of a small-size axial fan(SSAF). The prediction performance on the static pressure of all turbulent models is going downhill at the high static pressure and low flowrate region, but has improved at the axial flow region. In consequence, all turbulent models predict the static pressure coefficient with an error performance less than about 4% after the region of the flowrate coefficient of about 0.14. Especially, the turbulent model of SST $k-{\omega}$ shows the best prediction performance equivalent to an error performance less than about 2% on the static pressure.
In this work results from an underwater experiment on flow-induced noise in the interior of a towed body generated from a surrounding turbulent boundary layer are presented. The measurements were performed with a towed body under open sea conditions at towing depths below 100 m and towing speeds ranging from 2.4 m/s to 6.2 m/s (4 kn to 12 kn). Focus is given in the experiments to the relation between (outer) wall pressure fluctuations and the (inner) hydroacoustic near-field on the reverse side of a flat plate. The plate configuration consists of a sandwich structure with an (thick) outer polyurethane layer supported by an inner thin layer from fibre-reinforced plastics. Parameters of the turbulent boundary layer are estimated in order to analyse scaling relations of wall-pressure fluctuations, interior hydroacoustic noise, and the reduction of pressure fluctuations through the plate.
In the present study, flow characteristics of turbulent oscillatory flow in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct are investigated experimentally. In order to measure wall shear stress and pressure distributions, experimental studies for air flow are conducted in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct by using the LDV system with the data acquisition and the processing system. The wall shear stress measuring point bend angle of the $150^{\circ}$ and pressure distribution of the inlet (${\phi}=0^{\circ}$) to the outlet (${\phi}=180^{\circ}$) at $10^{\circ}$ intervals of the duct. The results obtained from the experimentation are summarized as follows: A wall shear stress value in an inner wall is larger than that in an outer wall, except for the phase angle (${\omega}t/{\pi}/6$) of 3, because of the intensity of secondary flow. The pressure distributions are the largest in accelerating and decelerating regions at the bend angle(${\phi}$) of $90^{\circ}$ and pressure difference of inner and outer walls is the largest before and after the ${\phi}=90^{\circ}$.

A numerical analysis is performed on the turbulent flow in the plain seal with injection. The parameters used in this study are as follows : Reynolds number, rotation speed, injection speed, clearance ratio, injection angle, and axial injection location. Flow pattern and leakage performance due to the variation of parameters are investigated. SIMPLER algorithm is used to solve the Navier-Stokes equation governing steady, incompressible turbulent flow and standard K- .epsilon. turbulent model is used to consider the turbulence effects. The leakage performance is significantly enhanced with injection. The increases of the injection flow rate and be rotation speed of the shaft cause the leakage performance to the increased. With the increase of the Reynolds number the leakage performance is diminished. At the injection angle of 90deg, the leakage coefficient has a minimum value. The pressure drop has a maximum value at axial center location but the injection location has little effect on the pressure drop. Clearance ratio has a significant effect on the pressure drop.
