Integral Abutment Bridge behavior under uncertain thermal and time-dependent load

  • Prediction of prestressed concrete girder integral abutment bridge (IAB) load effect requires understanding of the inherent uncertainties as it relates to thermal loading, time-dependent effects, bridge material properties and soil properties. In addition, complex inelastic and hysteretic behavior must be considered over an extended, 75-year bridge life. The present study establishes IAB displacement and internal force statistics based on available material property and soil property statistical models and Monte Carlo simulations. Numerical models within the simulation were developed to evaluate the 75-year bridge displacements and internal forces based on 2D numerical models that were calibrated against four field monitored IABs. The considered input uncertainties include both resistance and load variables. Material variables are: (1) concrete elastic modulus; (2) backfill stiffness; and (3) lateral pile soil stiffness. Thermal, time dependent, and soil loading variables are: (1) superstructure temperature fluctuation; (2) superstructure concrete thermal expansion coefficient; (3) superstructure temperature gradient; (4) concrete creep and shrinkage; (5) bridge construction timeline; and (6) backfill pressure on backwall and abutment. IAB displacement and internal force statistics were established for: (1) bridge axial force; (2) bridge bending moment; (3) pile lateral force; (4) pile moment; (5) pile head/abutment displacement; (6) compressive stress at the top fiber at the mid-span of the exterior span; and (7) tensile stress at the bottom fiber at the mid-span of the exterior span. These established IAB displacement and internal force statistics provide a basis for future reliability-based design criteria development.

A new method for in line electrokinetic characterization of cakes

  • The present study is devoted to the validation of a new method for in line electrokinetic characterisation of deposits on membrane surfaces. This method is based upon simultaneous measurements of transversal streaming potential and permeates flux at constant pressure before and during the deposit formation. Dead-end filtration experiments were conducted with negative flat membranes forming a narrow slit channel, negative hollow fiber membranes and mono-dispersed suspensions of (negatively charged) polystyrene latex and (positively charged) melamine particles at various concentrations. It was observed that the overall streaming potential coefficient increased in absolute value with the deposited latex quantity, whereas it decreased and changed of sign during the filtration of melamine suspensions. By considering a resistance-in-series model, the streaming potential coefficient of the single deposit ($SP_d$) was deduced from the electrokinetic and hydraulic measurements. The independence of $SP_d$ with respect to growth kinetics validates the measurement method and the reliability of the proposed procedure for calculating $SP_d$. It was found that $SP_d$ levelled off much more quickly when filtration was performed through the slit channel. This different behaviour could result from a non-uniform distribution of the deposit thickness along the membrane given that the position of measuring electrodes is different between the two cells.

재생냉각 연소실의 냉각성능 해석 (Cooling Performance Analysis of Regeneratively Cooled Combustion Chamber)

  • 경험식을 이용한 1차원 해석에 의하여 30톤급 재생냉각 연소기의 냉각 유로 설계를 수행하였다. 1차원 해석에 의한 벽온도는 3차원 CFD 해석과 비교하여 약 100 K의 온도차이를 보였다. 동일한 냉각성능을 유지하면서 냉각 채널의 최대 폭이 4mm 와 2mm인 두 가지 설계안을 제시하였다. 냉각유체의 압력강하는 20% 증가할 것으로 예측되었다. 열차 폐 코팅과 탄소 침착물의 열저항을 고려한 경우, 최대 벽온도는 700K로 예측되었다. 본 연구에서 제시한 냉각 방법은 용량이 부족한 것으로 판단되는 바 막냉각이 추가적으로 적용되어야 할 것으로 판단된다.

장시간 연소 텅스텐/이트리아 노즐목 삽입재의 내열성능 평가 (Thermal Performance Evaluations of Tungsten/Yttria as Nozzle Throat Insert Material for Long Duration Firing)

  • 고온고압, 장시간 연소조건하에서 일정한 추력을 유지하는 로켓 추진기관 개발을 위해 W/$Y_2O_3$ 노즐목 삽입재를 평가하였다. 연소시간 증가에 따른 내열성능 변화를 검토하였으며, 비삭마 소재로 범용되고 있는 CIT의 내열성능과 비교하였다. 연소시간이 증가함에 따라 삭마율은 감소하는 경향을 보였으며, W/$Y_2O_3$의 삭마율은 CIT의 약 55 %이었다. 노즐목 삽입재의 육안검사와 미세조직검사에서 연소시간의 증가로 인한 특이 현상은 발견되지 않았으며, 진공 열처리는 균열 방지에 효과가 있음을 확인하였다.

Antihypertensive effect of an enzymatic hydrolysate from Styela clava flesh tissue in type 2 diabetic patients with hypertension

  • BACGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In this randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study, we evaluated the antihypertensive effects of enzymatic hydrolysate from Styela clava flesh tissue in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension. SUBJECTS/METHODS: S. clava flesh tissue hydrolysate (SFTH) (n = 34) and placebo (n = 22) were randomly allocated to the study subjects. Each subject ingested two test capsules (500 mg) containing powdered SFTH (SFTH group) or placebo capsules (placebo group) during four weeks. RESULTS: In the SFTH group, systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly 4 weeks after ingestion by 9.9 mmHg (P < 0.01) and 7.8 mmHg (P < 0.01), respectively. In addition, the SFTH group exhibited a significant decrease in hemoglobin $A_{1c}$ with a tendency toward improvement in homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, triglyceride, apolipoprotein B and plasma insulin levels after 4 weeks. No adverse effects were observed in other indexes, including biochemical and hematological parameters in both groups. CONCLUSION: The results of our study suggested that SFTH exerts a regulatory, antihypertensive effect in patients with T2DM and hypertension.

Highly Tunable Block Copolymer Self-assembly for Nanopatterning

  • Nanoscale block copolymer (BCP) patterns have been pursued for applications in sub-30 nm nanolithography. BCP self-assembly processing is scalable and low cost, and is well-suited for integration with existing semiconductor fabrication techniques. However, one of the major technical challenges for BCP self-assembly is limited tunability in pattern geometry, dimension, and functionality. We suggest methods for extending the degree of tunability by choosing highly incompatible polymer blocks and utilizing solvent vapor treatment techniques. Siloxane BCPs have been developed as self-assembling resists due to many advantages such as high etch-selectivity, good etch-resistance, long-range ordering, and reduced line-edge roughness. The large incompatibility leads to extensive degree of pattern tunability since the effective volume fraction can be easily manipulated by solvent-based treatment techniques. Thus, control of the microdomain size, periodicity, and morphology is possible by changing the vapor pressure and the mixing ratio of selective solvents. This allows a range of different pattern geometry such as dots, lines and holes and critical dimension simply by changing the processing conditions of a given block copolymer without changing a polymer chain length. We demonstrate highly extensive tunability (critical dimension ~6~30 nm) of self-assembled patterns prepared by a siloxane BCP with extreme incompatibility.

  • 선천성 심질환에 대한 개심술후 발생한 폐동맥 고혈압 위기증이 혈관확장제 등의 내과적 치료에 반응하지 않는 경우에 체외막 산소화 장치를 사용함으로써, 안정적인 산소공급의 확보를 통한 폐혈관 저항의 상승 방지, 심박출량의 상당 부분의 바이패스를 통한 폐관류압의 감소, 우심실의 용적 부하 감소 및 심실보조 기능을 통한 우심부전 및 저심박출의 예방 등의 치료 효과를 기대할 수 있다. 본 증례의 경우, 동맥관 개존증과 이차성 폐동맥 고혈압이 합병되어 있었던 37세 남자에서 수술후 발생한 폐동맥 고혈압 위기증에 대한 치료시 체외막 산소화 장치를 함께 사용하여 좋은 결과를 얻었기에 보고하는 바이다.

마우스의 혈전증 및 내독소 쇼크 모델에 있어서 Higenamine에 의한 사망률 저하효과 (Higenamine Reduced Mortalities in the Mouse Models of Thrombosis and Endotoxic Shock)

  • Higenamine is a tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloid which was isolated as a cardiotonic principle from Aconiti tuber. 1.v. injection of higenamine was reported to increase the cardiac output and heart rate and to decrease the blood pressure and the systemic vascular resistance presumably by stimulating the adrenergic ${\beta}-receptors$. The anti-platelet and anti-thrombotic effects of higenamine were investigated in this paper. Higenamine(0.5 mg/ml) showed mild inhibitory effect against collagen induced platelet aggregation in vitro and the inhibito교 effect was increased with the pre-incubation$(5{\sim}30\;min)$ of platelet rich plasma(PRP) with higenamine. With the 30 min incubation, the platelet aggregation was almost completely inhibited. And the oral administration of higenamine$(50{\sim}200\;mg/kg)$ enhanced the survival in the mouse model of thrombosis and that of endotoxic shock. The anti-thrombotic and anti-septic effects of higenamine thus appear to be due to the ${\beta}-agonistic$ and the anti-platelet effects of this compound.

  • A reflection type 16x8 S-SEED array from LP(Low Pressure)-MODVD-grown GaAs/AlGaAs extremely shallow quantum well(ESQW) structures, with 4% Al fraction, has been fabricated. Its intrinsic region consists of 50 pairs of alternating 100.angs. GaAs and 100.angs. $Al_{0.04}$Ga$_{0.96}$As layers. A multilayer reflector stack of $Al_{0.04}$/Ga$_{0.96}$ As(599$\AA$)/AlAs(723$\AA$) was incorporated for the reflection plane below the p-i-n structures. The device processing after the MOCVD growth includes the mesa etching, isolation etching, insulator deposition, p & n metallization, and AR(Anti-Reflection) coating. For switching characteristics of the S-SEED in the form of p-i-n ESQW diode, the maximum optical negative resistance was observed at 856nm. Reflectance measurements showed a change from 15.6% to 43.3% for +0.9V to -6V bias. The maximum contrast ration of the S-SEED array was 2.0 and all the 128 devices showed optical bistability with contrast ratios over 2.4 at 5V reverse bias.

  • Chemical mechanical planarization(CMP) has emerged as the planarization technique of choice in both front-end and back-end integrated circuit manufacturing. Conventional CMP process utilize a polyurethane polishing pad and liquid chemical slurry containing abrasive particles. There have been serious problems in CMP in terms of repeatability and defects in patterned wafers. Since IBM's official announcement on Copper Dual Damascene(Cu2D) technology, the semiconductor world has been engaged in a Cu2D race. Today, even after~3years of extensive R&D work, the End-of-Line(EOL) yields are still too low to allow the transition of technology to manufacturing. One of the reasons behind this is the myriad of defects associated with Cu technology. Especially, dishing and erosion defects increase the resistance because they decrease the interconnection section area, and ultimately reduce the lifetime of the semiconductor. Methods to reduce dishing & erosion have recently been interface hardness of the pad, optimization of the pattern structure as dummy patterns. Dishing & erosion are initially generated an uneven pressure distribution in the materials. These defects are accelerated by free abrasive and chemical etching. Therefore, it is known that dishing & erosion can be reduced by minimizing the abrasive concentration. Minimizing the abrasive concentration by using Ce$O_2$ is the best solution for reducing dishing & erosion and for removal rate. This paper introduce dishing & erosion generating mechanism and a method for developing a semi-rigid abrasive pad to minimize dishing & erosion during CMP.
