  • As environmental problems become a problem of survival, interest in eco-friendly energy is increasing to improve the environment. So, demand for eco-friendly fuels such as hydrogen, LPG and CNG is increasing. In particular, Korea, which relies on imports of most fuels, is investing in the development of hydrogen energy, which is favorable in terms of high production volume and energy independence. However, As demand grows every year, a variety of accidents occur in various ways, ranging from small leak incidents to massive fires and explosion, thus research needs to be done. So, in this study, compared and analyzed cases of hydrogen, LPG, CNG accidents occurring at domestic and overseas refueling stations. and various programs were used for assessing risk, estimated the flame length due to gas leakage and evaluated the dangerous distance.

  • The very erosive cavitation is simulated by an inclined propeller dynamometer in the medium-size cavitation tunnel of MOERI. The inclined shaft for propeller makes strong cavitaion, which occurs around the root of a propeller blade. The cavitation begins at the leading edge of the propeller and contracted toward the trailing edge through the reentrant jet action. The cavity focused on the region near the trailing edge collapsed over the blade surface. As the impact pressure by the cavitation collapsing is too strong, it can damage the blade surface in the form of pit. This cavitation impacts created by the collapsing process are similar to the full-scale ones and are different from those by other erosion test methods. The newly developed cavitation erosion test method can be applied to evaluate the materials such as metals, ceramics and coatings in terms of cavitation resistance.

  • Recently, needs for UAVs and small aircraft and small turbo jet or turbo fan engines for these air-crafts are increasing. Size and weight are the two main restrictions in small air-crafts such as UAV or VLJ propulsion system applications. Therefore, high power density is required in small size and designers come up with unconventional solutions in the design of small aero gas turbine engines. One of the solutions is the usage of highly loaded axial compressors. This paper introduces an aerodynamic design method of a highly loaded axial compressor and its review process. Numerical simulation has been carried out to assess the aerodynamic performance of the compressor.

  • In this study, a simplified axisymmetric model is proposed for the problem of compressible internal flow past a microgap. Using numerical and experimental methods, the phenomena of choked flows are observed; these flows are induced by the acceleration of subsonic flows past the narrow cross-section of an annular shape made by a microgap. The relation between mass flow rate and differential pressure is obtained, and by comparing the result with experimental results, the reliability of the numerical results is discussed. The generation of a supersonic jet flow and its diffraction are visualized by performing the numerical analysis of axisymmetric compressible Navier-Stokes equations. This investigation greatly extends the physical understanding of the axisymmetric compressible flow, which has a wide range of engineering applications, e.g., in the case of valves in automotive power systems.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the injection characteristics of non-circular effervescent type twin-fluid nozzles. For this purpose, two types of non-circular nozzles (E1, E2) and one kind of circular nozzle (C) were used. At this time, the Aerorator mounted on the nozzle used three different diameters to match the aspect ratio with the nozzle exit area. Therefore, experiments were performed according to three aspect ratios for each nozzle, and a total experiments were conducted. Experiments were carried out by controlling the amount of air flowing after fixing the flow rate of the liquid, and the nozzle internal pressure and SMD were measured, and the jet image was taken from the nozzle. The discharge coefficients of the three kinds of nozzles were compared with the conventional equation and the Jedelsky's equation, and the Jedelsky's equation was found to be about 4 times larger. The droplet size (SMD) injected from the nozzle was found to be smaller in the non-circular shape than in the circular shape, which is expected to be caused by the difference of the discharge coefficient values.

  • Of late, the thrust vectoring control, using fluidic co-flow and counter-flow concepts, has been received much attention since it not only improves the maneuverability of propulsive engine but also reduces an additional material load due to the trailing control wings, which in turn reduce the aerodynamic drag. However, the control effects are not understood well since the flow field involves very complicated non: physics such as shock wave/boundary layer interaction, separation and significant unsteadiness. Existing data are not enough to achieve the effectiveness and usefulness of the thrust vectoring control, and systematic work is required for the purpose of practical applications In the present study, computational study has been performed to investigate the effects of the thrust vector control using the fluidic co-and counter-flow concepts. The results obtained show that, for a given pressure ratio, the thrust deflection angle has a maximum value at a certain suction flow rate, which is at less than $5\%$ of the mass flow rate of the primary jet. With a longer collar, the same vector angle is achievable with smaller mass flow rate.

  • Numerical simulations have been performed to investigate thrust characteristics of a through-type pintle nozzle with or without flow separation at various operating altitudes. The low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ with compressibility correction proposed by Sarkar are applied. The detail flow structures are observed and static pressures along nozzle wall are compared with experimental results. The flow separation in the pintle nozzle disappears and jet plume strongly expands as its operating altitude increases. To evaluate the thrust characteristics, the momentum term and pressure term of thrust are analyzed. Thrust and thrust coefficient at altitude 20 km are about 10% more than them at the ground 0km.

  • This study investigated the acoustic forcing effects on the liquid column breakup length and the trajectory of liquid jets in crossflows. Cold-flow tests with a single hole circular nozzle injector were carried out by changing the injection pressure and acoustic forcing amplitude. Additionally, spray images were obtained at 12 phase angles to investigate the influence of the phage angle. The results revealed that the liquid column breakup lengths generally decreased under the acoustic forcing conditions, in comparison to those under the non-acoustic forcing conditions. However, they were not affected by the variation in the phase angles. On the contrary, it was found that the acoustic forcing hardly influenced the liquid column trajectories.

  • Among various metal oxide semiconductors, ZnO has an excellent electrical, optical properties with a wide bandgap of 3.3 eV. It can be applied as a photocatalytic material due to its high absorption rate along with physical and chemical stability to UV light. In addition, it is important to control the morphology of ZnO because the size and shape of the ZnO make difference in physical properties. In this paper, we demonstrate synthesis of size-controlled ZnO tetrapods using an atmospheric pressure plasma system. A micro-sized Zn spherical powder was continuously introduced in the plume of the atmospheric plasma jet ignited with mixture of oxygen and nitrogen. The effect of plasma power and collection sites on ZnO nanostructure was investigated. After the plasma discharge for 10 min, the produced materials deposited inside the 60-cm-long quartz tube were obtained with respect to the distance from the plume. According to the SEM analysis, all the synthesized nanoparticles were found to be ZnO tetrapods ranging from 100 to 600-nm-diameter depending on both applied power and collection site. The photocatalytic efficiency was evaluated by color change of methylene blue solution using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity increased with the increase of (101) and (100) plane in ZnO tetrapods, which is caused by enhanced chemical effects of plasma process.

  • Thermal protection system structures such as double-panel structures are used on the skin of the fuselage and wings to prevent the transfer of high heat into the interior of an high supersonic/hypersonic aircraft. The thin-walled double-panel skin can be exposed to acoustic loads by high power engine noise and jet flow noise, which can cause sonic fatigue damage. In order to predict the fatigue life of the skin, the octave bandwidth SPL should be calculated as narrow bandwidth PSD or acoustic load history using interpolation method. In this paper, a method of converting the octave bandwidth SPL acoustic load into a narrow bandwidth PSD and reconstructed acoustic load history was investigated. The octave bandwidth SPL was converted to the narrow bandwidth PSD using various interpolation methods such as flat, log and linear scale, and the probabilistic characteristics and fatigue damage results were compared. It was found that average error of fatigue damage index by the log scale interpolation method was relatively small among three methods.
