  • In order to obtain homogeneous and high quality products in powder compaction forging process, it is very important to control stress, strain, density and density distributions. Therefore, it is necessary to understand quantitatively the elasto-plastic deformation and densification behaviors of porous metals and metal powders. In this study, elasto-plastic finite element method using Lee-Kim's pressure dependent porous material yield function has been used for the analysis of three dimensional indenting process. The analysis predicts deformed geometry, stress, strain and density distribution and load. The calculated load is in good agreement with experimental one. The calculated results do not show axisymmetric distributions because of the edge effect. The core part which is in contact with the indentor and the outer diagonal edge part are in compressive stress states and the middle part is in tensile stress state. As a results, it can be concluded that three dimensional analysis is more realistic than axisymmetric assumption approach.

  • This paper is an experimental result of investigating lateral soil movements at piled bridge abutments by using the centrifuge model facility. Three different centrifuge model experiments, changing the methods of ground improvement at bridge abutment on the soft clayey soil (no improvement, preconsolidation and plastic board drains (PBD), sand compaction pile (SCP) + PBD), were carried out to figure out which method is the most appropriate for resisting against the lateral soil movements. In the centrifuge modelling, construction process in field was reconstructed as close as possible. Displacements of abutment model, ground movement, vertical earth pressure, cone resistance after soil improvement and distribution of water content were monitored during and after centrifuge model tests. As results of centrifuge model experiments, preconsolidation method with PBD was found to be the most effective against the lateral soil movement by analyzing results about displacements of abutment model, ground movement and cone resistance. Increase of shear strength by preconsolidation method resulted in increasing the resistance against lateral soil movement effectively although SCP could mobilize the resistance against lateral soil movement. It was also found that installment with PBD beneath the backfill of bridge abutment induced effective drainage of excess pore water pressure during the consolidation by embanking at the back of the abutment and resulted in increasing the shear strength of clay soil foundation and eventually increasing the resistance of lateral soil movement against piles of bridge abutment.

  • Fe-Al intermetallic compounds were manufactured by using the field-activated combustion synthesis process. Effects of chemical composition(Fe:Al= 3: 1,2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3), Compaction pressure(150, 250, 350MPa) and electrical resistance on the reaction were investigated in this system. As the molar ratio of Al, compaction pressure and electric field increased, the combustion temperature and velocity were increased. The influences for reaction with current adjust way were investigated in this system. But in the absence of a electric field, the reaction could sustain a nonsteady combustion wave and was not completed. The reaction products were characterized with X-ray, SEM and EDXS to determine the structure and composition.

  • In order to improve the weak mechanical properties of cast Mg alloys, Mg-$Zn_1Y_2$ (at%) alloy powders were synthesized using gas atomization, a typical rapid solidification process. The powders consist of fine dendrite structures less than 3 ${\mu}m$ in arm spacing. In order to fabricate a bulk form, the Mg powders were compacted using magnetic pulse compaction (MPC) under various processing parameters of pressure and temperature. The effects of the processing parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties were systematically investigated.

  • In this study, micro-sized and nano-sized pure aluminum (Al) powders were compressed by unidirectional pressure at room temperature. Although neither type of Al bulk was heated, they had a high relative density and improved mechanical properties. The microstructural analysis showed a difference in the process of densification according to particle size, and the mechanical properties were measured by the Vickers hardness test and the nano indentation test. The Vickers hardness of micro Al and nano Al fabricated in this study was five to eight times that of ordinary Al. The grain refinement effect was considered to be one of the strengthening factors, and the Hall-Petch equation was introduced to analyze the improved hardness caused by grain size reduction. In addition, the effect of particle size and dispersion of aluminum oxide in the bulk were additionally considered. Based on these results, the present study facilitates the examination of the effect of particle size on the mechanical properties of compacted bulk fabricated by the powder metallurgy method and suggests the possible way to improve the mechanical properties of nano-crystalline powders.

  • A magnetic powder, M-type barium hexaferrite (BaFe12O19), was consolidated with the spark plasma sintering process. Three different holding temperatures, $850^{\circ}C$, $875^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ were applied to the spark plasma sintering process with the same holding times, heating rates and compaction pressure of 30 MPa. The relative density was measured simultaneously with spark plasma sintering and the convergent relative density after cooling was found to be proportional to the holding temperature. The full relative density was obtained at $900^{\circ}C$ and the total sintering time was only 33.3 min, which was much less than the conventional furnace sintering method. The higher holding temperature also led to the higher saturation magnetic moment (${\sigma}_s$) and the higher coercivity ($H_c$) in the vibrating sample magnetometer measurement. The saturation magnetic moment (${\sigma}_s$) and the coercivity ($H_c$) obtained at $900^{\circ}C$ were 56.3 emu/g and 541.5 Oe for each.

  • In the present work, a design of experiment (DOE) technique using Taguchi method, has been applied to optimize the properties of ODS tungsten heavy alloys(WHAs). In this work Taguchi method involves nine experiments groups for four processing parameters (compaction pressure, sintering temperature, binding material type, and oxide type) with three levels was implemented. The signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed to obtain the optimal process parameter levels and to analyze the effect of these parameters on density, electrical conductivity, hardness and compressive strength values. The results showed that all the chosen factors have significant effects on all properties of ODS tungsten heavy alloys samples. The density, electrical conductivity and hardness increases with the increase in sintering temperature. The analysis of the verification experiments for the physical properties (density and Electrical conductivity) has shown that Taguchi parameter design can successfully verify the optimal parameters, where the difference between the predicted and the verified values of relative density and electrical conductivity is about 1.01% and 1.15% respectively.

  • Designed patterns of slit are introduced to the uni-directional (UD) prepreg in order to enhance the formability of the carbon/epoxy composites without wrinkling and laddering. Three different types of the slit alignment along the thickness direction are applied to analyse the deformation behavior during the compression moulding process of laminates. Degrees of the slit open and the mechanical strength are evaluated based on the level of the compaction pressure in the course of forming process. Results have shown that the mechanical strength of laminates having slits could attain at least 80% of the conventional ones without slits. However, further studies are required to identify the direct relevance of the slit alignment in laminate to the mechanical properties.

  • Recently, densified fuels from biomass are widely used North America and Europe as a regenerable and clean bioenergy. Compaction of sawdust of poplars(Populus tomentiglandulosa and Populus davidiana) with starch glue for densified fuel were studied. Calorific and elemental analysis were carried out to assess these species as fuel. Hot-press process was used and compaction was performed under temperatures from 120 to $160^{\circ}C$ and at pressure of 50kgf/$cm^2$ for prescribed time. Densified fuels were evaluated by its specific gravities, compressive strengths and fines. In the case of with-glue system, when the press temperature is $160^{\circ}C$ and press time is above 7.5 minutes, densified fuels with fines less than 5% can be produced. On the contrary, in the case of without-glue system, densified fuels with fines less than 5% can be produced by controlling the press conditions and the moisture content of sawdust.

  • Oil and natural gas reserves have been recognised abundantly in clayey rich rock formations in deep costal reservoirs. It is necessary to understand the sedimentary history of those reservoir rocks to well explore these natural resources. This work designs a group of laboratory experiments to mimic the physical process of the sedimentary clay-rich rock formation. It presents characterisation results of the physical properties of the artificial clayey rocks synthesized from illite clay, quartz sand and brine water by high-pressure consolidation tests. Special focus is given on the effects of illite clay content and high-stress consolidation on the physical properties. Multi-step loaded consolidation experiments were carried out with stress up to 35 MPa on mixtures constituting of the illite clay, quartz sand and brine water with five initial illite clay contents (w=85%, 70%, 55%, 40% and 25%). Compressibility and void ratio were characterised throughout the physical compaction process of the mixtures constituting of five illite clay contents and their water permeability was measured as well. Results show that the applied stress induces a great reduction of clayey rock void ratio. Illite clay contents has a significant influence on the compressibility, void ratio and the permeability of the physically synthesized clayey rocks. There is a critical illite clay content w=70% that induces the minimum void ratio in the physically synthesised clayey rocks. The SEM study indicates, in the high-pressure synthesised clayey rocks with high illite clay contents, the illite clay minerals are located in layers and serve as the material matrix, and the quartz minerals fill in the inter-mineral pores or are embedded in the illite clay matrix. The arrangements of the minerals in microscale originate the structural anisotropy of the high-pressure synthesised clayey rock. The test findings can give an intuitive physical understanding of the deep-buried clayey rock basins in energy reservoirs.
