This dissertation analyzes the running mechanism of flexible and thin tape above rotating head through the numerical simulation and the experiment. The scope of analysis is confined to the phenomena of two dimensional elasto hydrodynamic lubrication between the protruded bump on a rotating cylinder and the running tape. This model is based on the elastic deformation equation of plate and shell and Reynolds equation. Finite difference method is employed as a numerical technique to calculate (1) the distribution of pressure between the running tape and rotating bump and (2) the vertical deformation of elastic thin tape over he rotating bump under hydrodynamic pressure. In numerical analyses, the effects of bump size on flying characteristics of the tape were evaluated and examined considering the influence of tension and stiffness of tape.
In this research, a semi-analytical solution is presented for computing mechanical displacements and thermal stresses in rotating thick cylindrical pressure vessels made of functionally graded material (FGM). The modulus of elasticity, linear thermal expansion coefficient, and density of the cylinder are assumed to change along the axial direction as a power-law function. It is also assumed that Poisson's ratio and thermal conductivity are constant. This cylinder was subjected to non-uniform internal pressure and thermal loading. Thermal loading varies in two directions. The governing equations are derived by the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Using the multilayer method, a functionally graded (FG) cylinder with variable thickness is divided into n homogenous disks, and n sets of differential equations are obtained. Applying the boundary conditions and continuity conditions between the layers, the solution of this set of equations is obtained. To the best of the researchers' knowledge, in the literature, there is no study carried out bi-directional thermoelastic analysis of clamped-clamped rotating FGM thick-walled cylindrical pressure vessels under variable pressure in the longitudinal direction.

Introduction of intermittent electricity production systems like wind and solar power to electricity market together with the deregulation of electricity markets resulted in numerous start/stops, load variations and off-design operation of water turbines. Hydraulic turbines suffer from the varying loads exerted on their stationary and rotating parts during load variations since they are not designed for such operating conditions. Investigations on part load operation of single regulated turbines, i.e., Francis and propeller, proved the formation of a rotating vortex rope (RVR) in the draft tube. The RVR induces pressure pulsations in the axial and rotating directions called plunging and rotating modes, respectively. This results in oscillating forces with two different frequencies on the runner blades, bearings and other rotating parts of the turbine. This study investigates the effect of transient operations on the pressure fluctuations exerted on the runner and mechanism of the RVR formation/mitigation. Draft tube and runner blades of the Porjus U9 model, a Kaplan turbine, were equipped with pressure sensors for this purpose. The model was run in off-cam mode during different load variations. The results showed that the transients between the best efficiency point and the high load occurs in a smooth way. However, during transitions to the part load a RVR forms in the draft tube which induces high level of fluctuations with two frequencies on the runner; plunging and rotating mode. Formation of the RVR during the load rejections coincides with sudden pressure change on the runner while its mitigation occurs in a smooth way.

Experiments were done for performance and flow characteristics of a counter-rotating axial flow fan. Performance curves of a counter-rotating axial flow fan were obtained and compared by varying the blade pitch angles. The fan characteristic curves were obtained following the Korean Standard Testing Methods for Turbo Fans and Blowers (KS B 6311). The fan flow characteristics were measured using a five-hole probe and a slanted hot-wire. The velocity profiles between the hub and tip of the fans were measured and analyzed at the peak efficiency point. The peak efficiency of the counter-rotating axial flow fan was improved about 15% respectively, compared with the single rotating axial fan. The single rotating axial flow fan showed relatively law efficiency due to the swirl velocities behind rotor exit which produced pressure losses. The counter-rotating axial flow fan showed that the swirl velocity generated by the front rotor was eliminated by the rear rotor and the associated dynamic pressure is recovered in the from of the static pressure rise.
Experimental study was conducted to reveal the flow mechanism under rotating stall in an axial flow fan. For this study unsteady pressure was measured using high frequency pressure transducers mounted on the casing wall of rotor passage and total pressure fields were measured at the rotor upstream and downstream. The measured pressure signal was analyzed by Wavelet Transform and Double Phase Locked Averaging Technique. From the result of unsteady pressure field of the casing wall, one period of rotating stall was divided into three zones and the flow characteristics on each zone were described in detail. The pressure field was also analyzed in terms of the pressure distribution along pressure side and suction side of blade tip. From the result of total pressure fields at inlet and outlet of the rotor, the useful information on the characteristics of the stall cell in radial direction was provided.

Rotating disks are used in various machines such as data storage device, gyroscope, circular saw, etc. Transverse vibration of a rotating disk is very important for the performance of these machines. This work proposes a method to suppress transverse vibration of a very flexible rotating disk in non-contacting manner. A system considered in this study is a very flexible rotating disk with a thrust bearing pad which is located underneath the rotating disk. The pressure force generated in the gap between the rotating disk and the thrust pad pushes the rotating disk in the direction of axis of rotation while the centrifugal force and the elastic recovery force push the rotating disk in reverse direction. The balance between these forces suppresses the transverse vibration of the rotating disk. A coupled disk-fluid system is analyzed numerically. The finite element method is used to compute the pressure distribution between the thrust pad and the rotating disk while the finite difference method is used to compute the transverse vibration of a rotating disk. Results show that the transverse vibration of the rotating disk can be suppressed effectively for certain combination of air bearing and operating parameters.

The present experimental and numerical investigations are performed for the characteristics of transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure losses and skin- friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of water and glycerine-water solution (44%) with the inner cylinder rotating at speed of 0∼600 nm, respectively. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficient due to the rotation is uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, it is gradually declined for turbulent flow regime.
In the present study, the performance characteristics and the number of stall cells during rotating stall of a centrifugal air compressor were experimentally investigated. If the flow coefficient is lower than 0.150, the static pressure at impeller inlet is higher than that at inlet duct And reverse flow is observed under these flow coefficient region. Maximum adiabatic efficiency is obtained for the tested compressor around flow coefficient 0.128, and it is independent of compressor rotating speed. The number of stall cells and their rotational speeds are distinctive features of the rotating stall phenomenon. The present study is mainly concerned with the number of stall cells and their rotational speeds. The interpretation method of visualization is based on the pressure distribution in the circumference pressure fields while plotting the pressure and its harmonics variations in time in polar coordinates.

Micro hydraulic turbines take a growing interest because of its small and simple structure as well as high possibility of applying to micro and small hydropower resources. The differential pressure exiting within the city water pipelines can be used efficiently to generate electricity like the energy generated through gravitational potential energy in dams. In order to reduce water pressure at the inlet of water cleaning centers, pressure reducing valves are used widely. Therefore, pressure energy is wasted. Instead of using the pressure reduction valve, a micro counter-rotating hydraulic turbine can be replaced to get energy caused by the large differential pressure found in the city water pipelines. In this paper, detail studies have been carried out to acquire basic design data of micro counter-rotating hydraulic turbine, output power, head, and efficiency characteristics on various number of runner vane. Moreover, the influences of pressure, tangential and axial velocity distributions on turbine performance are also investigated.
Numerical analyses on the aerodynamic characteristics of a counter rotating axial flow fan is carried out using the frequency domain panel method. Front rotor and rear rotor blades of a counter rotating axial fan are designed by using the simplified meridional flow analysis method with the radial equilibrium equation and the free vortex design condition, according to design requirements. Performance characteristics of a counter rotating axial flow fan are estimated for the variation of design parameters such as the hub to tip ratio, the taper ratio and the solidity. Pressure losses were higher at leading edge and hub region of rotor blades. Characteristic curve of the counter rotating fan was overpredicted without consideration of viscous effect.
