Very High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (VHTR) has been selected as a high energy heat source for nuclear hydrogen generation. The VHTR can produce hydrogen from heat and water by using a thermo-chemical process or from heat, water, and natural gas by steam reformer technology. A co-axial double-tube primary hot gas duct (HGD) is a key component connecting the reactor pressure vessel and the intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) for the VHTR. In this study, a preliminary design analysis for the primary HGD of the nuclear hydrogen system was carried out. These preliminary design activities include a determination of the size, a strength evaluation and an appropriate material selection. The determination of the size was undertaken based on various engineering concepts, such as a constant flow velocity model, a constant flow rate model, a constant hydraulic head model, and finally a heat balanced model.
CANDU reactor core is composed a few hundreds pressure tubes, which support and locate the nuclear fuels in the reactor. Each pressure tube provides pressure boundary and flow path of primary heat transport system in the core region. In order to guarantee the structural integrity of pressure tube flaws which can be found by in-service inspection, crack growth and fracture initiation assessment have to be performed. Stress intensity factors are important and basic information for structural integrity assessment of planar and laminar flaws (e. g. crack). This paper reviews and confirms the stress intensity factor of axial crack, proposed in CSA N285.8-05, which is an fitness-for-service evaluation code for pressure tubes in CANDU nuclear reactors. The stress intensity factors in CSA N285.8-05 were compared with stress intensity factors calculated by three methods (finite element results, API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 2007 Fitness-For-Service and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section XI). The effects of Poisson's ratio and anisotropic elastic modulus on stress intensity factors were also discussed.
This study investigated deformation behavior of major nuclear structural materials under cyclic loading conditions via cyclic stress-strain test. The cyclic stress-strain tests were conducted on SA312 TP316 stainless steel and SA508 Gr.3 Cl.1 low-alloy steel, which are used as materials for primary piping and reactor pressure vessel nozzle respectively, under cyclic load with constant strain amplitude and constant load amplitude at room temperature (RT) and $316^{\circ}C$. From the results of tests, the cyclic hardening and softening behavior, stabilized cyclic stress-strain behavior, and ratcheting behavior of both materials were investigated at both RT and $316^{\circ}C$. In addition, appropriate considerations for cyclic deformation behavior in the structural integrity evaluation of major nuclear components under excessive seismic condition were discussed.
This paper presents the results of integrity assessment for the cracks happened in reactor vessel upper head penetration nozzles. The crack morphology for a boat sample from crack area was analyzed through microscope. The stress condition including weld residual stress around crack was analyzed using finite element analysis. From the results of crack morphology and stress condition, the crack was concluded as primary water stress corrosion cracking. The integrity of the cracked nozzle was assessed by the methodology provided in ASME Section XI. According to the assessment results, the remaining life of the cracked nozzle was 1.43 yrs. and the plant decided to repair it.
During the period of reinforcement work for the licensing renewal of CANDU NPP, the fuel channels, Calandria tubes and feeders of CANDU Reactor are replaced. The remote visual inspection of Calandria internal is also performed during the period of reinforcement work. This period is a unique opportunity to inspect the inside of the Calandria. The visual inspection for the Calandria vessel and its internals of Wolsong NPP Unit 1 was performed by Nuclear Engineering & Technology Institute(NETEC) of KHNP. To perform this inspection, NETEC developed equipment applied new technology such as the synchronization of 3D CAD, automatic alignment and control system. The inspection confirmed that the Calandria integrity of Wolsong NPP Unit 1 is perfect.
During the period of retubing work for the licensing renewal, the fuel channels, calandria tubes and feeders of CANDU Reactors will be replaced, and calandria visual examination will be performed. This period is a unique opportunity to inspect the inside of the calandria. The visual inspection for the calandria vessel and its internals of Wolsong NPP is scheduled for confirming the calandria integrity. The first visual inspection for the calandria is planned in Pt. Lepreau led by AECL. The visual inspection for Wolsong NPP, led by NETEC(Nuclear Engineering & Technology Institute) of KHNP, will employ 3D laser scanner and 3D CAD Mock-up for the first time in the world, in addition to a conventional video camera. The inspection system is composed of a robot with the 3D laser scanner, a video camera and a hardness meter.
The evaluation method for the failure frequency of reactor vessel under pressurized thermal shock(PTS) is developed using probabilistic fracture mechanics. The probabilistic reactor integrity evaluation code, named R-PIE code, is developed. The validity and uncertainty of the R-PIE code is investigated. The reactor failure frequencies under PTS for Kori-1 nuclear power plant and other type of domestic nuclear power plants are evaluated. The reference PTS temperature for domestic nuclear power plants is obtained for the rule making against PTS failure.
The containment Integrated Leakage Rate Testing(ILRT) of nuclear power plants in Korea is performed in accordance with NSSC(Nuclear Safety and Security Commission) code 2012-16 and ANSI/ANS 56.8-1994. Nuclear power plants in Korea and the United States are to apply same test criteria, ANSI/ANS 56.8-1994, except type A testing time. NPPs in Korea apply 24 hours according to NSSC code 2012-16, but NPPs in United States apply 8 hours according to 10CFR50 App. J for type A test. So, there are many difficulties in order to perform ILRT in Korea. In this study, I review the impact on the ILRT results and the effect of ILRT due to type A testing time. The future, we will continue study to enhance the test reliability and improve these problems.
Perforated plates are used for the steam generator tube-sheet and the Reactor Vessel Closure Head in the Nuclear Power Plant. The ASME code, Section III Appendix A-8000, addresses the analysis of perforated plates, however, this analysis is only limited to the flat plate with a triangular perforation pattern. Based on the concept of the effective elastic constants, simulation of flat and spherical perforated plates and their equivalent solid plates were carried out using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The isotropic material properties of the perforated plate were replaced with anisotropic material properties of the equivalent solid plate and subjected to the same loading conditions. The generated curves of effective elastic constants vs ligament efficiency for the flat perforated plate were in agreement with the design curve provided by ASME code. With this result, a plate with spherical curvature having perforations can be conveniently analyzed with equivalent elastic modulus and equivalent Poisson's ratio.
SG-365 steel is an important material and used for manufacturing a pressure vessel which the gas piping. In this investigation, the elastic plastic fracture toughness of this material is evaluated by the an unloading compliance method according to the ATM E813-97 method on the smooth and side groove 1CT specimens. The effect of smooth and side groove is studied on the elastic plastic fracture toughness. The side grooved specimen is very useful in estimation of the $J_IC. Because it is much easier than the smooth specimen to the onset of the ductile tearing by the R curve method. Besides, it improves the accuracy of toughness values, decreases the scattering of them and tunneling and shear lip by the side groove.
