  • A mycotoxin is a toxic secondary metabolite produced by organisms of the fungus kingdom, commonly known as molds and has been widely contaminated in agricultural products such as grains and cereals. Many methods including high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) have already been proposed and reviewed for mycotoxins. These methods are either expensive or time-consuming due to the complication of sample preparation and pre-concentration before determination. In addition, both methods are unsuitable for the routine screening of large sample numbers. A biosensor is a fictive analytical device that combines a biological component with a physicochemical detector for the detection of an analyte. Biosensors represent a rapidly expanding field, at the present time, with an estimated 60% annual growth rate; the major impetus coming from the health-care industry but with some pressure from other areas, such as food safety and environmental monitoring. Antibodies and aptamers are bioreceptors which have been used in the development of biosensors. There are many kinds of antibodies and aptamers specific to mycotoxin, and antibody (or aptamer)-based biosensors have been successfully developed for the detection of mycotoxin. The biosensors permit the rapid, sensitive, simple, and on-site detection of a range of mycotoxins and can be an alternative method to traditional methods such as HPLC and GC. This presentation provides the development trends of biosensors to mycotoxins and their application to food and agricultural products.

  • Acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives are used in many different parts in the world. But acrylic acid in PSAs may occur unexpected results such as corroding adherends or producing by-products when applied within electronic devices. This study employed acrylic PSAs based on 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (2-HEA) and butyl acrylate (BA) with different coating thickness. There are two types of curing agents. One is methylaziridine derivative (MAZ) and the other is aluminum acetylacetonate (AlACA). This study examined the adhesion performance and curing behaviors using peel strength, probe tack and gel fraction. Also, the viscoelastic properties of acrylic PSAs were investigated from Advanced rheometric expansion system (ARES).

  • The PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cell is one of the promising fuel cell systems as a new small power generating device for automobiles and buildings. The optimal design of cooling plates installed between MEA (membrane electrode assembly) is very important to achieve high performance and reliability of the PEMFC because it is very sensitive to temperature variations. In this study, six types of cooling plate models for the PEMFC including basic serpentine and parallel shapes were designed and their cooling performances were analyzed by using three-dimensional fluid dynamics with commercial software. The model 3 designed by revising the basic serpentine model represented the best cooling performance among them in the aspect of uniformity of temperature distribution and thermal reliability, The serpentine models showed higher pressure drop than the parallel models due to a higher flow rate.

  • Carbon nanofibers were prepared from the decomposition of various carbon-containing gases over pure Ni, pure Fe and their alloys with Cu. They yields, properties, and structure of carbon nanofibers obtained from the various reaction conditions were analyzed. Type of reacting gas, reaction temperature and catalyst composition were changed as the reaction variable. With Ni-Cu catalysts, the maximum yields of carbon nanofibers were obtained at temperatures between 550 and 650$^{\circ}C$ according to the reacting gas mixtures of C2H2-H2, C2H4-H2 and C3H8-H2, and the surface areas of the carbon nanofibers produced were 20∼350㎡/g. In the case of CO-H2 mixture, the rapid deposition of carbon nanofibers occurred with Fe-Cu catalyst and the maximum yield were obtained around 550$^{\circ}C$ with the range of surface areas of 140∼170㎡/g. The electrical resistivity of carbon nanofiber regarded as the key property of filler for the application of electromagnetic interference shielding was very sensitive to the type of reactant gas and the catalyst composition ranging 0.07∼1.5Ωcm at a pressure of 10000 psi, and the resistivity of carbon nanofibers produced over pure nickel catalyst were lower than those over alloy catalysts. SEM observation showed that the carbon nanofibers produced had the diameters ranging 20∼300 nm and the straight structure of carbon nanofibers changed into the twisted or helical conformation by the variation of reacting gas and catalyst composition.

  • BACKGROUND: An official analytical method was developed to determine etofenprox residues in agricultural commodities using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). METHODS AND RESULTS: The etofenprox residue was extracted with acetone from representative samples of five raw products which comprised rice grain, apple, mandarin, cabbage, and soybean. The extract was then serially purified by liquid-liquid partition and Florisil column chromatography. For rice and soybean samples, acetonitrile/n-hexane partition was additionally coupled to remove nonpolar lipids. Reversed phase HPLC using an octadecylsilyl column was successfully applied to separate etofenprox from co-extractives. Intact etofenprox was sensitively detected by ultraviolet absorption at 225 nm. Recovery experiment at the quantitation limit validated that the proposed method could apparently determine the etofenprox residue at 0.02 mg/kg. Mean recoveries from five crop samples fortified at three levels in triplicate were in the range of 93.6~106.4%. Relative standard deviations of the analytical method were all less than 10%, irrespective of crop types. A selected-ion monitoring LC/mass spectrometry with positive atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization was also provided to confirm the suspected residue. CONCLUSION(s): The proposed method is simple, rapid and sensitive enough to be employed in routine inspection or monitoring of agricultural products for the etofenprox residue.

  • Generated agri-chemical droplets by orchard sprayers are evaporated regenerated and transported along wind streams. The droplets are deposited to targets after changing their sizes, affecting the retention of droplets. An orchard sprayer, designed for spraying grapevines was studied on the spatial distribution of droplet size. The experimental variables were spray direction (0, 22.5, 45, 67.5 and 90˚), distance(2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 m) and fan speed (2,075 and 3,031 rpm). Droplet sizes were converted and analyzed from spray stains, sampled using water sensitive papers. The number median diameter (NMD) increased with an increase of the distance due to disappeared fine droplets (<50 ㎛): however, the volume median diameter (VMD) decreased due to shrunken large droplets (>100 ㎛). Fast fan speed delivered large droplets to 3.5 m, but the spatial distributions of NMD and VMD were not uniform. Slower fan speed decreased the possibility of evaporation and drift; therefore, plenty of droplets were maintained up to 3.0 m. The upward blasting distance was limited within 3 m, but the limit to the ground level was extended to 3.5 m. Concentrated wind and droplets to the ground level should be redistributed to upper canopy direction, leading more uniform deposits. High speed wind and system pressure should be avoided because of generating fine droplets, which would be disappeared and drifted away.

  • Most investment castings contain some porosities and microcavities. In this study, we investigated the elimination trends of various internal defects in IN738LC investment castings for industrial gas turbine blade by hot isostatic pressing. The results showed that cylindrical defects which are under $0.6mm{\Phi}{\times}7mm$ size are mostly eliminated and aspect ratio of defects is more sensitive factor than their cross section shape in removing these defects. Increasing hot isostatic pressure and holding time doesn't affect the elimination trend of cylindrical defects over $0.6mm{\Phi}{\times}7mm$ size because first step(plastic deformation) of HIP densification doesn't occur under these HIPping conditions.

  • This paper analyzes the impact of the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement on the basis of the published text and agreed schedule of commitments. We find that the Agreement reinforces existing patterns of comparative advantage between Canada (agriculture and resource-based sectors) and Korea (autos and other industries). The sensitive sectors that held up the deal for years - autos into Canada and beef into Korea - witness major trade gains, but are not unduly disrupted. In both economies, the major output gains otherwise come in non-traded services sectors, driven by income effects. We find that trade diversion effects are quite significant; this lends support for the domino theory of major free trade agreements - since the Korea-EU agreement broke the ice, the pressure has intensified on third parties to re-level playing fields by striking their own deals. The study breaks new ground in modelling services trade by developing policy impacts based on the extent to which the text of the Agreement modifies Korea's and Canada's scores on the OECD's Services Trade Restrictiveness Index and by providing estimates of Mode 3 Services trade impacts. The analysis of the Agreement as negotiated, the present study, in our view, is a step forward in understanding the impact of modern free trade agreements.

  • Photo Resist (PR) ashing process was carried out with the atmospheric pressure- dielectric barrier discharge (ADBD) using $SF_6/N_2/O_2$. Ashing rate (AR) was sensitive to the mixing ratio of the oxygen and nitrogen of the blower type of ADBD asher. The maximum AR of 5000 A/min was achieved at 2% of oxygen in the $N_2$ plasma. With increasing the oxygen concentration to more than 2% in the $N_2$ plasma, the discharge becomes weak due to the high electron affinity of oxygen, resulting in the decrease of AR. When adding 0.5% of SF6 to $O_2/N_2$ mixed plasma, the PR AR increased drastically to 9000 A/min and the ashed surface of PR was smoother compared to the processed surface without $SF_6$. Carbon Fluorinated polymer may passivate the PR surface. It was also observed that the glass surface was not damaged by the fluorine.
