A two-dimensional Navier-Stokes code based on AUSMPW+ scheme has been developed to simulate the hypersonic flowfield of hypersonic shock-shock interaction. AUSMPW+ scheme is a new hybrid flux splitting scheme, which is improved by introducing pressure-based weight functions to eliminate the typical drawbacks of AUSM-type schemes, such as non-monotone pressure solutions. To study the real gas effects, three different gas models are taken into account in this paper: perfect gas, equilibrium flow and nonequilibrium flow. It has been investigated how each gas model influences on the peak surface loading, such as wall pressure and wall heat transfer, and unsteady flowfield structure in the region of shock-shock interaction. With the results, the value of peak pressure is not sensitive to the real gas effects nor to the wall catalyticity. However, the value of peak heat transfer rates is affected by the real gas effects and the wall catalyticity. The structure of the flowfield also changes drastically in the presence of real gas effects.
As various mobile robots and manipulator robots have been commercialized, robots that can be used by individuals in their daily life have begun to appear. With the development of robots that support daily life, the interaction between robots and humans is becoming more important. Manipulator robots that support daily life must perform tasks such as pressing buttons or picking up objects safely. In many cases, this requires expensive multi-axis force/torque sensors to measure the interaction. In this study, we introduce a low-cost two-axis pressure sensor that can be applied to manipulators for education or research. The proposed system used three force sensitive resistor (FSR) sensors and the structure was fabricated by 3D printing. An experimental device using a load cell was constructed to measure the biaxial pressure. The manufactured prototype was able to distinguish the +-x-axis and the +-y-axis pressures.
High shear adhesion on wet and rough surfaces and tactile feedback of gripping forces are highly important for realizing robotic gripper systems. Here, we propose a bioinspired robotic gripper with highly shear adhesion and sensitive pressure sensor for tactile feedback systems. To achieve them, we fabricated multi-walled carbon nanotube sensing layer on a thin polymeric adhesive layer of polydimethylsiloxane. With densely hexagonal-packed microstructures, the pressure sensor achieved 9 times the sensing property of a sensor without microstructures. We then assembled hexagonal microstructures inspired by the toe pads of a tree frog, giving strong shear adhesion under both dry and wet surfaces such as silicon (42 kPa for dry and ~30 kPa for underwater conditions) without chemical-residues after detachment. Our robotic gripper can prevent damage to weak or smooth surfaces that can be damaged at low pressure through pressure signal feedback suggesting a variety of robotic applications.
Objectives: Based on the concept of environmental justice, we developed an evaluation model for setting and adopting the direction of environmental health policy using environmental health indicators and statistics from the local governments of Seoul, including environmentally susceptible populations. Methods: We selected a total of 20 variables based on data officially released from national and local governments. After the classification of these variables into the five components of environmental pressure, environmental status, environmental disease, sensitive population, and socioeconomic status, a basic model was constructed to calculate the relative scores of the local governments. Results: The cumulative impact scores for assessment of environmental health status were similar to those of the environmental pressure and status components. The highest five cumulative impact scores fell between 114 and 147. Local government A reported the highest scores and had high environmental pressure, environmental status and socioeconomic status. In addition, the evaluation of the other four local governments indicated that they exhibited above average scores for environmental pressure and environmental status, two did so for environmental disease, and four for sensitive population. Conclusion: We constructed a model to evaluate the environmental health status of the local governments of Seoul based on cumulative impact scores under the concept of environmental justice. As an approach for studying environmentally vulnerable areas through relative ranking, this model was feasible for policy-setting. In addition, this approach would be an analytically useful tool for decision-makers.
Sand and dust storm in East Asia, so called Asian dust, is a seasonal meteorological phenomenon. Mostly in spring, dust particles blown into atmosphere in the arid area over northern China desert and Manchuria are transported to East Asia by prevailing flows. An Asian dust event occurred on 6-8 May 2007 is chosen to investigate how sensitive the Asian dust transport forecast to the initial condition uncertainties and to interpret the characteristics of sensitivity structures from the viewpoint of dynamics and predictability. To investigate the forecast sensitivities to the initial condition, adjoint sensitivities that calculate gradient of the forecast aspect (i.e., response function) with respect to the initial condition are used. The forecast aspects relevant to Asian dust transports are dry energy forecast error and lower tropospheric pressure forecast error. The results show that the sensitive regions for the dry energy forecast error and the lower tropospheric pressure forecast error are initially located in the vicinity of the trough and then propagate eastward as the surface low system moves eastward. The vertical structures of the adjoint sensitivities for the dry energy forecast error are upshear tilted structures, which are typical adjoint sensitivity structures for extratropical cyclones. Energy distribution of singular vectors also show very similar structures with the adjoint sensitivities for the dry energy forecast error. The adjoint sensitivities of the lower tropospheric pressure forecast error with respect to the relative vorticity show that the accurate forecast of the trough (or relative vorticity) location and intensity is essential to have better forecasts of the Asian dust event. Forecast error for the atmospheric circulation during the dust event is reduced 62.8% by extracting properly weighted adjoint sensitivity perturbations from the initial state. Linearity assumption holds generally well for this case. Dynamics of the Asian dust transport is closely associated with predictability of it, and the improvement in the overall forecast by the adjoint sensitivity perturbations implies that adjoint sensitivities would be beneficial in improving the forecast of Asian dust events.
Purpose: Driving is an important activity that is affected by various motor and cognitive deficits after stroke. On the other hand, there is no standard screening tool to evaluate the sitting asymmetry during driving, which is the stereotyped postural characteristic observed in patients with stroke. Therefore, this study compared the buttock pressure during simulated driving between healthy adults and patients with stroke. Methods: Ten post-stroke patients and ten healthy subjects participated in the experiment. The participants experienced simulated driving of 6.1 km during approximately 5 minutes for adaptation. The driving scenario consisted of 3.5 km urban traffic conditions, 10 km straight highway, and 7 km curved or hilly rural roads. Force sensitive application (FSA) was used to analyze the distribution of the buttock pressure on the driver's seat. The symmetry index (SI) was determined using the average buttock pressure of each side of the buttock. The closer SI is to zero, the higher the symmetry of buttock pressure. Results: These studies showed that the SI of healthy subjects was significantly closer to zero than that of the stroke patients. Conclusion: The buttock pressure of the stroke patients showed more asymmetry than that of the healthy subjects during simulated driving. Therefore, a therapeutic approach is needed for symmetrical sitting to improve the driving performance.
Effects of intraventricular norepinephrine (NE) on rabbit blood pressure and heart rate were investigated. 1) Blood pressure was little affected by small doses of NE (below $500{\mu}g$) but showed marked rise by 1 mg. 2) Heart rate was decreased by intraventriccular NE $(200{\sim}500{\mu}g)$. One mg of NE caused less pronounced bradycardia than with smaller doses. The bradycardia could not be observed in vagotomized or atropinized animals. 3) Intraventricular NE potentiated reflexive bradycardia produced by 5-hydroxytryptamine. 4) Cord-sectioned rabbit showed different responses; the smaller doses $(100{\sim}200{\mu}g)$ produced transitory bradycardia and depression of blood pressure, which followed by tachycardia and pressure rise. The transitory bradycardia and depressor effects were not observed in cord-sectioned and vagotomized rabbit. 5) Treatment of animals with reserpine, guanethidine and hexamethonium changed the effects of intraventricular NE on blood pressure, i.e., in these cases the smaller doses of NE caused maked elevation of blood pressure. 6) From these observations it was inferred that central NE caused stimulation of cardioinhibitory and vasomotor center. The former seemed to be more sensitive to NE than the latter. Susceptibility of the vasomotor center to NE seemed to be influenced by peripheral sympathetic tone.
Uroflowmetry is non-invasive and easily performed to diagnose benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) frequent in aged men. Weight change during urination is usually measured to estimate the urinary flow rate by a load cell, but sensitive to any impacts against the bottom of the container, leading to unnecessary noise generation. Moreover, load cells are relatively expensive raising the production cost. The present study proposed a new technique, measuring hydraulic pressure on the bottom of the urine container to evaluate the urinary flow rate. Low cost pressure transducer enabled almost perfectly linear relationship between the urine volume and the hydraulic pressure. During both the simulated and human urination experiment, variance of the pressure signal was more than 50 % smaller than the weight signal acquired by a load cell, which demonstrated that the impact noise was decreased to a great degree by pressure compared to weight measurement.
Graphene, an allotrope of carbon, is a two-dimensional material having a unique electro-mechanical property that shows significant change of the electrical conductance under the applied strain. In addition of the extraordinary mechanical strength [1], graphene becomes a prospective candidate for pressure sensor technology [2]. However, very few investigations have been carried out to demonstrate characteristics of graphene sensor as a device form. In this study, we demonstrate a pressure sensor using graphene double layer as an active channel to generate electrical signal as the response of the applied vertical pressure. For formation of the active channel in the pressure sensor, two single graphene layers which are grown on Cu foil (25 um thickness) by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) are sequentially transformed to the poly-di-methyl-siloxane (PDMS) substrate. Dry and wet transfer methods are individually employed for formation of the double layer graphene. This sensor geometry results a switching characteristic which shows ~900% conductivity change in response to the application of pulsed pressure of 5 kPa whose on and off duration is 3 sec. Additionally, the functional reliability of the sensor confirms consistent behavior with a 200-cycle test.
