An anomalous cold-weather period occurred during January 2011 in East Asia, and this study investigates the event by focusing on the blocking phenomena formed at Northeastern Asia. The area of cold weather is determined to represent the characteristic features of abnormal cold temperature. The 2010/11 winter is divided into three periods P1, P2 (cold period), and P3. For the cold area ($30-50^{\circ}N$, $115-135^{\circ}E$) the corresponding cold period P2 is determined to be 39 days from 23 December 2010 through 30 January 2011. During P1 and P3 temperature anomalies from the climatological mean are small with large standard deviation compared to those of P2, which has large negative anomaly and small standard deviation. The period P2 is dominated by blocking, which was determined by distributions of 500-hPa geopotential height and potential temperature on the 2 PVU surface. Correlation-coefficient analyses show that during P2 the temperature in the cold area is related with pressure of Northeastern Asia, while the temperature during P1 and P3 is related with pressure of Northwest of Korea. Also, during P1 and P3 the temperature pattern shows eastward propagation, but during P2, a stationary pattern. All the observations imply that, during the cold period P2, the temperature in the cold area is related with blocking in Northeastern Asia. During P1 and P3 temperature pattern is related with 500-hPa geopotential height in Siberia, and this relationship is also observed in the climatological mean state.

In this study, CT specimen were prepared from Pressure Vessel Steel which was used for pressure vessel plates for room and low temperature service. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, -3$0^{\circ}C$, -6$0^{\circ}C$, -8$0^{\circ}C$, -10$0^{\circ}C$ and -12$0^{\circ}C$ and in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 and 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. At the constant street ratio, the threshold stress intensity factor range ΔK$_{th}$ in the early stage of fatigue crack growth(Region I) and stress intensity factor range ΔK in the stable of fatigue crack growth(Region II) was increased in proportion to descend temperature. It assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region. The straight line slope relation of logarithm do/dN -ΔK in RegionII, that is, the fatigue crack growth exponent m increased with descending temperature at the constant stress ratio. It was assumed that the fatigue crack growth rate do/dN is rapid in proportion to descending temperature in Region IIand the cryogenic-brittleness greatly affect a material with decreasing temperature.e.greatly affect a material with decreasing temperature.
The energy dissipation of coal under dynamic loads is a major issue in geomechanics and arising extensive concerns recently. In this study, dynamic loading tests of coal were conducted using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system, the characteristics of dynamic behavior and energy dissipation of coal were analyzed, and the mechanism of energy dissipation was discussed based on the fracture processes of coal under dynamic loads. Experimental results indicate that the energy dissipation of coal under dynamic loads has a positive linear correlation with both incident energy and dynamic compressive strength, and the correlation coefficients between incident energy, dynamic compressive strength and the energy dissipation rate are 0.74 and 0.98, respectively. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that higher level of stress leads to greater energy released during unstable crack propagation, thus resulting in larger energy dissipation rate of coal under dynamic loads. At last, a semi-empirical energy dissipation model is proposed for describing the positive relationship between dissipated energy and stress.

This study investigates the far-field noise from three Falcon 9 vehicle launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA, USA, as measured from the same location within the nearby community of Lompoc. The overall sound pressure levels for the three launches are shown to be similar, but some differences in the early launch period are thought to be weather-related. The peak directivity angle in overall level is approximately 65 deg, which is consistent with horizontally-fired, static rocket data. For the third launch, waveforms and spectra are analyzed for different events during the launch sequence. The measured spectral bandwidth decreases with time, but spectral levels remain above the ambient noise throughout the main-engine firing. Additionally, late-launch phenomena observed in the data appear to be correlated with main-engine cutoff and second-stage engine start.
Measurements were performed to investigate the effects on flame and pressure development by varying locations of multiple obstacles in a top-venting explosion chamber. The chamber dimension was 1000 mm in height with a $700\;{\times}\;700\;mm^2$ cross-section and a rectangular vent area of $700\;{\times}\;700\;mm^2$. Three different multiple obstacles with blockage ratio of 30% were used by changing from 200 mm, 500 mm to 800 mm in heights within the chamber. Temporally resolved flame front images were recorded by a high speed camera to investigate the interaction between the propagating flame and the obstacles. The results showed that the triangular bar caused the fastest flame developments at given times whereas the lowest was obtained with the cylindrical bar. It was also found that local flame displacement speeds of different obstacles were sensitive to the locations of obstacles. The local speed becomes larger in going from 200 mm, to 500 mm and to 800 mm in heights. The obstacles in height of 800 mm yielded the highest overpressure whereas the lowest was in height of 200 mm.

Ultrasonic Nanocrystal Surface Modification (UNSM) is a peening technology that generates elastic-plastic deformation on the material surface to which a static load of a air compressor and a dynamic load of ultrasonic vibration energy are applied by striking the material surface with a strike pin. In the UNSM-treated material, the structure of the surface layer is modified into a nano-crystal structure and compressive residual stress occurs. When UNSM is applied to welds in a reactor coolant system where PWSCC can occur, it has the effect of relieving tensile residual stress in the weld and thus suppressing crack initiation and propagation. In order to quantitatively evaluate the compressive residual stress generated by UNSM, many finite element studies have been conducted. In existing studies, single-path UNSM or UNSM in a limited area has been simulated due to excessive computing time and analysis convergence problems. However, it is difficult to accurately calculate the compressive residual stress generated by the actual UNSM under these limited conditions. Therefore, in this study, a minimum finite element peening analysis area that can reliably calculate the compressive residual stress is proposed. To confirm the validity of the proposed analysis area, the compressive residual stress obtained from the experiment are compared with finite element analysis results.
Low frequency noise emitted by wind turbines is one of the most noise complaints. In this study, the reliability of the models was examined by comparing the measured sound pressure levels with the predicted levels based on Denish model and commercial programs of the SounPLAN and the ENPro based on ISO 9613. As a result of applying it to representative 3 MW wind turbines, on lnad, the measured and the predicted values differed within a maximum of 5 dB in the frequency range of 12.5 Hz to 80 Hz. It may be due to the change in the acoustic power levels because the wind turbines have been in operation for more than 7 years. However, considering that the Boundary Element Method (BEM) predicted value, which is known to be the most accurate in the low frequency band, the predicted values are well matched within 2.5 dB, the models of this study are expected to be used as deviation within 3 dB.
In this study, damage resulting from internal flaws was investigated by finite element analysis for the safety evaluation of a non-destructive testing platform for hydrogen pressure vessels. A specimen was modeled and calculated using finite element analysis to determine material properties in accordance with the parameters of the composite material in order to assess the safety of the Type 4 hydrogen pressure vessel. Through this, flaws in the hydrogen pressure vessel were modeled, and test conditions were provided in accordance with rules to look into whether there was safety. Delamination, foreign object, and vertical cracks were modeled for internal flaws, and damage was examined in accordance with failure criteria. As the delamination defect approached the interior of the hydrogen pressure tank, it became more likely to cause damage. Additionally, as the crack depth grew in the case of vertical cracks, the likelihood of crack propagation rose. On the other hand, it was anticipated that the foreign item defect would suffer more damage from the outside in. A non-destructive testing platform will be used to assess the safety of fuel cell vehicles that are already in operation in future research.

The propagation rate(da/dt) prediction parameter and the microstructure properties of creep crack in domestic 3.3NiCrMov steel were investigated at 550$\^{C}$ by using 0.5" CT specimen under constant load(4090N) and constant Ct(300∼4000N/mhr) condition that was maintained during crack growth of 1mm distance. C* usually increased with crack length though load was reduced in order to maintain constant Ct value as crack growth and considerably showed the scatter band, but Ct depended on load line displacement rate and represented a good relation with da/dt. At constant toad and Ct region, crack growth slope was 0.900 and 0.844 each, in the other hand C* slope was 0.480. Fully coalesced area(FCA) ahead of crack tip was increased as Ct value increase to the critical value, and after that value FCA decreased. The average diameter ditribution of cavity in FCA showed the greatest value about 1.5 ㎛ when Ct=2000N/mhr. The increasing of Ct in FCA view point enlarged the size of damage area and the size reached to maximum 800 ㎛ when Ct=2000N/mhr.
A variable optical attenuator with a bending-sensitive fiber (BSF) that can be used in optical networks is developed. The refractive index profile of the BSF is divided into four regions which are inner core, center dip of inner core, outer core and clad. The 3-dimensional finite difference beam propagation method (3D FD-BPM) is utilized to find the characteristics of the BSF, so the mode profile of the BSF and optical power attenuation according to the bending are investigated, and the equivalent model of the BSF is made. By using this equivalent model of the BSF, the BSF is fabricated, and the refractive index profile of the BSF is measured, which is similar to refractive index profile of the proposed BSF. The fabricated variable optical fiber attenuator (VOFA) consists of the BSF in a rectangular rubber ring with a fixed bend radius (BR) in a steady state. The VOFA using the proposed BSF was able to attenuate the optical power by more than about -38 ㏈ at certain wavelengths (1540∼1560 nm) based on adjusting the mechanical pressure applied to the upper surface of the rectangular rubber ring with the bent BSF. In addition, the proposed VOFA produced an insertion loss of 0.68 ㏈, polarization dependent loss (PDL) of about 0.5 ㏈, and return loss of less than -60 ㏈.
