Modeling of Nozzle Flow Inside a Y-JET Twin-Fluid Atomizer (Y-JET 2-유체 분무노즐 내부유동의 모델링)

  • A simplified one-dimensional analysis has been performed to predict the local pressure distributions in Y-Jet twin-fluid atomizers. Fluid compressibility was considered both in the gas(air) and two-phase(mixing) ports. The annular-mist flow model was adopted to analyze the flow in the mixing port. A series of experiments also has been performed; the results show that the air flow rate increases and the liquid flow rate decreases with the increase of the air injection pressure and/or with the decrease of the liquid injection pressure. From the measured injection pressures and flow rates, the appropriate constants for the correlations of the pressure loss coefficients and the rate of drop entrainment were decided. The local pressures inside the nozzle by prediction reasonably agree with those by the experiments.

  • A boundary condition reflecting automatically, regardless of the direction of the gas flow, the pressure drop due to the entrance and exit effect occurred at a connection of two elements with different cross-sections in calculating the pressure profile of a vacuum network composed of many chambers and pipes which have different shape and vacuum properties was developed. The method of correcting the pressure drop in an element of varying cross-section like a cone was also introduced to keep the system free from directionality. The developed boundary conditions are applied as an example to a linear composed vacuum system to show how to make a set of simultaneous equations based on the particle balance equation and how to obtain its solution.

  • The importance of intake system can not be overstressed in the recent heavy duty commercial vehicle design. The basic requirements of intake system are to have less flow resistance and better air cleaning performance which have direct effects on the performance and service life of engine. In order to improve the performance of engine intake system, the flow phenomena in the intake system should be fully understood. With readily availble CFD code, the numerical analysis becomes the more reliable tools for flow optimization in recent design work. In this research, flow field in the intake system was analyzed by STAR-CD, the 3-D computational fluid dynamics code. Especially, the flow inside of air cleaner was thoroughly analyzed. Pressure distribution and velocity profile in the air cleaner and intake duct was obtained. Having the dust seperated from incoming air at the expense of less pressure drop is the ultimate goal for the research.

Analysis of Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop During Gas Cooling Process of Carbon Dioxide in Transcritical Region (초임계 영역내 $CO_2$ 냉각 열전달과 압력강하 분석)

  • The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $CO_2$(R-744) during gas cooling Process of carbon dioxide in a horizontal tube were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experiments were conducted without oil in the refrigerant loop. The main components of the refrigerant loop consist of a receiver. a variable-speed pump. a mass flowmeter, an evaporator. and a gas cooler(test section). The main components of the water loop consist of a variable-speed Pump. an constant temperature bath. and a flowmeter. The gas cooler is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus The test section consists of smooth, horizontal stainless steel tube of 9.53 mm outer diameter and 7.75 mm inner diameter. The length of test section is 6 m. The refrigerant mass fluxes were 200 ~ 300 kg/($m^2{\cdot}s$) and the inlet pressure of the gas cooler varied from 7.5 MPa to 8.5 MPa. The main results were summarized as follows : The predicted correlation can evaluated the R-744 exit temperature from the gas cooler within ${\pm}10%$ for most of the experimental data, given only the inlet conditions. The predicted gas cooley capacity using log mean temperature difference showed relatively food agreement with gas cooler capacity within ${\pm}5%$. The pressure drop predicted by Blasius estimated the pressure drop on the $CO_2$ side within ${\pm}4.3%$. The predicted heat transfer coefficients using Gnielinski's correlation evaluated the heat transfer coefficients on the $CO_2$ side well within the range of experimental error. The predicted heat transfer coefficients using Gao and Honda's correlation estimated the heat transfer coefficients on the coolant side well within ${\pm}10\;%$. Therefore. The predicted equation's usefulness is demonstrated by analyzing data obtained in experiments.

  • The objective of the paper was to calculate the pressure drop and to investigate the recirculation region of the conical orifices used in Kwang-yang Iron & Steel Company. The flow field with water used as a working fluid was the turbulent flow for Reynolds number of 2$\times$10$^4$. The effective parameters fur the pressure drop and the recirculation region were the conical orifice\`s inclined angle ($\theta$) against the wall, the interval(S) between orifices, the relative angle of rotation($\alpha$) of the orifices, the shape of the orifice's hole(circle, rectangle, triangle) having the same area, the number(N) of the orifice's holes having the same mass flow rate, and the thickness(t) of the orifices. It was fecund that the shape of the orifice's hole, the number of the orifice's holes and the thickness of the orifice affected the total pressure drop a lot and that the conical orifice's inclined angle against the wall, the relative angle of rotation of the orifices, the number of the orifice's holes and the thickness of the orifices affected the center location of the recirculation region. The PISO algorithm with FLUENT code was employed to analyze the flow field.

  • This paper discusses the acoustic performance of simple expansion chamber using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). The CFD model consists of an axisymmetric grid with a single period sinusoid of acceptable amplitude and duration imposed at the inlet boundary condition. The time history of the static pressure is recorded at two points, one in the inlet pipe and one point in outlet pipe. The time history of the static pressure is converted to the frequency domain using Fourier Transform and the transmission loss (TL) of the muffler is obtained from the ratio of the static pressure at the inlet and outlet pipe. The transmission loss of CFD result is compared with that of the computational acoustic analysis using the boundary element method (BEM). There are some differences in two results due to the pressure drop according to the inlet and outlet pipe length. Therefore, the effects of the pressure drop to the transmission loss have to be considered.

  • Three dimensional numerical heat transfer analysis was carried out against periodically arranged fuel injectors of the liquid rocket engine. A finite volume method based on SIMPLE algorithm was adapted which gave a good agreement with the published results of the heat transfer problem of a backward facing step. The Nusselt number and pressure drop increased as the distance between the injector elements decreased. When the Reynolds number increased, the Nusselt number increased but nondimensionalized pressure drop decreased slightly.

  • Numerical analysis of three dimensional incompressible turbulent flows in LNG marine high pressure drop control valves was carried out by using the CFD-ACE from ESI-Group. In this study, flow characteristics of control valves with complex flow fields including cavitation effect were investigated. Simulation was performed on five models of control valve that had different orifice diameters of anti-trim and the size of valve. Comparing newly designed control valves for controling the occurrence of cavitation with the conventional valve, new valves showed a improved flow pattern with almost no cavitation.

  • For numerical analysis of the plate heat exchanger, a lot of time are required in modeling work and calculation. Whereas, this paper was purposed to identify characteristic of the plate heat exchanger through simplification of modeling by interpreting the numerical analysis proximity with the actual model. This study was also examined temperature difference between inlet side and outlet side, inner pressure drop, heat transfer area of plate and change of heat transfer coefficient on the plate depending on the inner corrugation angle and corrugation pitch of a herring bon pattern of the plate heat exchanger among chevron types of the plate exchanger.

  • A numerical analysis of the heat and mass transfer and pressure drop characteristics in modular shell and tube bundle heat exchanger was carried out. Finite Concept Method based on FVM and $k-\varepsilon$ turbulent model were used for this analysis. Condensation heat transfer enhanced total heat transfer rate $4\sim8%$ higher than that of dry heat exchanger. With increasing humid air inlet velocity, temperature and relative humidity, and with decreasing heat exchanger aspect ratio and cooling water velocity, total heat and mass transfer rate could be increased. Cooling water inlet velocity had little effect on total heat transfer.
