  • In this study, experimental verification of performance of flat speaker has been conducted. The piezofilm (PVDF) actuator has been designed to prevent the distortion of sound and make the frequency response of radiated sound flat. The electrode pattern of piezofilm actuator is optimized to satisfy the design objective. The formulation of design method is based on the coupled finite element and boundary element method and electrode pattern is optimized by genetic algorithm. The flat speaker with optimized piezofilm actuator has been manufactured. The sound pressure level at the distance of 50cm is measured using microphone and compared with the result of numerical simulation.

  • This paper presents the thermally induced hot spot characteristics of rubbing surface in the friction pad disk brake. During the braking period, the rubbing surface with irregular asperities that are strongly engaged in rough surface, wear, and deformed surface due to a friction heating may produce an irregular distorted geometry of the disk surface. The tribological interactions between the disk and the pads are unstable if the contact stress is severe, in which the irregularity develops the contact pressure distribution, leading eventually to localized contact, high temperature and formation of hot spots. The computed results of contact spots that are simulated using a coupled thermal-mechanical analysis present sinusoidal distortions and localized extrusions of the disk surface, which are strongly related to a hot spot in the practical disk brake.

  • Standard dimensionless parameters cannot simultaneously represent all operation modes of a pump-turbine. They either have singularities at E=0 and multiple values in the 'unstable' areas, or else get singular at n=0. P. Suter (1966) introduced an alternative set of variables which avoids singularity and always remains unique-valued. This works for non-regulated pumps but not so well for regulated machines. A modification by C.S. Martin avoids distortion at low load. The present paper describes further improvements for the representation of torque, and for closed gate (where Suter's concept does not work). The possibility to interpolate across all operation modes is likewise useful for representing other mechanical parameters of the machine. Practical application for guide vane torque and pressure pulsation data is demonstrated by examples.

  • Finite element analysis was performed to analyze structural safety of a new heavy-duty direct injection diesel engine. A half section of the in-line 6-cylinder engine was selected as a computational domain. A mapping method was used to project heat transfer coefficients from CFD results of engine coolant flow onto the FE model. The accurate setting of thermal boundary condition on the FE model was expected to result in improved prediction of temperature, cylinder bore distortion, and stresses. Characteristics of high cycle fatigue were investigated by assuming the engine was operated under the following five loading conditions repeatedly; assembly force, assembly force with thermal loading, alternating maximum gas pressure loading at each cylinder combined with assembly force and thermal loading. Distribution of fatigue safety factor was calculated by using it Haigh diagram in which the maximum and the minimum stresses were selected from the five loading cases.

  • In this article, the scattering effect around a microphone is studied by using boundary element method, because it is hard to find the scattering experimentally. The scattering problem is defined by impinging an obstacle, i.e. a solid cylinder, with an incident plane wave. From this analysis, the scattering is numerically calculated by varying the microphone shape, the incident angle and the distance between microphones. It is found that the scattering effect of a microphone increases as the frequency increases and is not considerable in the low frequency region. However, it is noted that there might be the pressure distortion above 4 kHz due to the scattering in microphone measurement.

  • Modern loudspeaker systems are changing an active loudspeaker system that have multiple input channels and power amplifier. So, we cannot measure these active loudspeakers with IEC 60268-5 standard. This paper introduces an IEC 60268-21 standard that can measure an active loudspeaker having many analog and digital and wireless or wired inputs and having various control parameters.

  • Ferroelectric $(Ba_xSr_{1-x})TiO_3$ (BST) thin films have been deposited on (001) MgO single crystals by a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. The structure of deposited BST thin films were investigated by an x-ray diffractometer. Calculated c-axis lattice parameters of the BST films exhibit a strong lattice distortion, which was not observed in ceramic BST at room temperature. This lattice distortion of BST has been attributed to strains caused by lattice constant difference between film and substrate, oxygen vacancies in BST film, and thermal expansion difference between film and substrate. Ferroelectric properties at 10 GHz have been measured using a HP 8510C vector network analyzer. Dielectric properties, capacitance tunability and quality factor, of the interdigitaed capacitors fabricated on BST films were calculated from the measured s-parameters. Two distinct behaviors in structural, opitical, and microwave properties of BST films were observed; below and above 200 mTorr of oxygen pressure in the deposition chmber.

  • A contact-type area-varying capacitive displacement sensor, or CLECDiS, can measure displacements over millimeter ranges with nanometer resolution. However, a small changes in the contact condition due to the surface profile or friction, which are inherent characteristics of contact-type sensors, lead to significant distortion of the output signal. Therefore, ensuring reliable contact conditions during CLECDiS measurements is the most important area to be improved in their actual use. Herein, in order to design an instrument for ensuring reliable contact conditions, the contact condition is analyzed by characterizing the signal distortion, observing the pressure distribution between the contacting surfaces, and measuring the motional errors of the sensor using a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV). The manufactured instrument enables a CLECDiS to be used in an ultraprecise positioning system with improved reliability.

  • MFL (Magnetic flux leakage) type nondestructive testing has been used for inspection of underground gas pipelines to find metal defects by detecting magnetic leakage signal. Because the underground gas pipeline is exposed by environment such as high pressure with great humidity, external defects are easily formed on the surface of pipelines and they are being grouped respectively. These adjacent defects cause the signal distortion of leakage flux so that it is hard to estimate the shape information of defects. In this paper, we performed to study of the signal distortion and compensating method for multiple defects in MFL type nondestructive testing system by using 3D FEM simulation. This paper proposes the basic algorithm of defect signal analysis on multiple defects on the surface of 30 inch diameter pipeline.

  • $BiFeO_3$(BFO), when forming a solid solution with $BaTiO_3$(BTO), shows structural transformations over the entire compositional range, which not only gives a way to increase structural stability and electrical resistivity but also applies a means to have better ferromagnetic ordering. In this respect, we have prepared and studied 0.7BFO-0.3BTO thin films on $Pt(111)/TiO_2/SiO_2/Si$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Various deposition parameters, such as deposition temperature and oxygen pressure, have been optimized to get better quality films. Based on the X-ray diffraction results, thin films were successfully deposited at the temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ and an oxygen partial pressure of 10mTorr. The dielectric, ferroelectric, and magnetic properties have then been characterized. It was found that the films deposited under lower oxygen pressure corresponded to lower leakage current. Magnetism measurement showed an induced ferromagnetism. The microstructures associated with. the magnetic and dielectric properties of this mixed-perovskite solid solutions were observed by transmission electron. microscopy, which revealed the existence of complicated ferroelectric domains, suggested that the weak spontaneous magnetization was closely associated with the decrease in the extent of rhombohedral distortion by a partial substitution of $BaTiO_3$ for $BiFeO_3$.
