  • A new flow model is developed for the analysis of compression molding of sheet molding compounds(SMC) and penalty finite element formulation is presented to predict flow front progressions more accurately. In this model SMC is assumed nonisothermal fluid, which has different viscosities in extension and in shear. The flow is allowed to slip at the mold and is resisted by friction force which is proportional to the relative velocity at mold surface. For the verification of the model, the press force and flow patterns are compared with those of experiments and available results by other works in this field. It is also demonstrated, using the computational procedure described and the proposed model, that optimal initial charge shapes for the filling can be effectively computed.

  • This study investigated the slow cooling conditions in the molding of aspheric glass lens using the design of experiment (DOE). The optimization of the slow cooling conditions with respect to the form accuracy (PV) of the molded lens were ascertained by employing full factorial design. As a result of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and P-value (significance level), it was verified that slow cooling rate represent the most significant operative variables that affect the corresponding response variable. In the optimum condition, the molded lens show 82% of transcription ratio.

  • Ogive parts of large-caliber ammunition in Korea are manufactured by the Press Nosing method, but this method has the disadvantage of requiring additional processes such as lubrication before and after the press process. This study proposes the possibility of applying the Swaging method to improve these shortcomings. A large-diameter shell body was manufactured in sub-scale and plastic working experiments using a swaging process were performed. We investigated whether plastic processing is possible up to 75 % of the diameter reduction rate that satisfies the final molding dimension, and whether the dimensions of the product produced by swaging molding are satisfactory as the hardness changes according to the diameter reduction rate and the increase in thickness. The test using the prototype confirmed that the hardness increased proportionally with the diameter reduction rate and by more than HV 335 at the reduction rate of 75 %. The material thickness variation tended to be similar to the theoretical calculated value, and the thickness increase rate was proportional to 65.4 % at the reduction rate of 75 %.

  • The metal lead frame, a semiconductor component, has product tolerances in micro units as compared to products made with a larger size mold. Therefore, small deflections of the mold and of the press as well as the press molding process itself have a strong influence on accuracy of the product. Hence, it is necessary for the process design to consider the structural response of the mold and the press during deformation. In the current study, the mold deflection and pressure on the punch is examined using the finite element modeling (FEM) program ABAQUS. The results from the simulation were verified with the dynamic deformation measurement equipment using digital image correlation (DIC).

  • This study explores the compression molding of diffractive-aspheric lenses using GeSbSe chalcogenide glasses. A mold core with diffractive structure was prepared and a chalcogenide glass lens was molded at various temperatures using the corresponding core. The effect of molding temperature on the transcription characteristics of diffractive structure was examined, by measuring and comparing the diffractive structure between the mold core and the molded chalcogenide glass lens using a microscope and a white light interferometer. In addition, the applicability of the molded lens for thermal imaging was evaluated, by measuring the form error.

  • Up to now the incomplete texture have been manufactured through the 2D surface treatment like simple painting process or printing process. But in order to obtain 3D texture like natural object, micro scales' 3D surface structure on the surface of plastic part must be formed. In this study plastic smart phone case with 3D texture was produced by developing the surface duplication technology of natural object used electro-forming technology, by developing the press forming technology converted plane stamper to curved surface stamper and by developing the injection mold and molding technology which have been installed the curved surface stamper.

  • Aspheric lenses used in the thermal imaging are typically fabricated using expensive single-crystal materials (Ge and ZnS, etc.) by the costly single point diamond turning (SPDT) process. As a potential solution to reduce cost, compression molding method using chalcogenide glass has been attracted to fabricate IR optic. Thermal deformation of a molded lens should be compensated to fabricate chalcogenide aspheric lens with form accuracy of the submicron-order. The thermal deformation phenomenon of molded lens was analyzed ant then compensation using mold iteration process is followed to fabricate the high accuracy optic. Consequently, it is obvious that compensation of thermal deformation is critical and useful enough to be adopted to fabricate the lens by molding method.
