  • This paper describes some development of computer-aided system called "COLD-FORMING" and "DESIGN-DIE". "COLD-FORMING" is designed for the forming sequence and "DESIGN-DIE" for the die design of press forming rotationally symmetric parts. The computer program developed is used in interactive and written in BASIC. Design rules for process planning and die design are formulated from process limitations, plasticity theory and know-how of experience of the field. "COLD-FORMING" capabilities include (1) analysis of forming sequence and recognition of individual operation involved each step, (2) determination of intermediate shape and dimensions, (3) calculation of forming loads to perform each forming operation and (4) graphic out put for the operation sheet. "DESIGN-DIE" capabilities include (1) optimum die design corresponding to the output of "COLD-FORMING" and (2) graphic output for the die design.of "COLD-FORMING" and (2) graphic output for the die design.ie design.

  • The reduction of product development time is exposed to the competitive pressure due to shortened product-and production technology lifecycles as well as increasingly dynamic markets. Specially in automobile companies, that is of major importance for designing die because it is a bottleneck process in the development of a new car. To improve this conventional design process, this paper describes how to design it fast and flexibly. This was done by a modular method using standard template and a feature and knowledge based design method along the design process.

  • Recently, ultra high strength products can be manufactured by the hot press forming process of Boron steel in automotive and electronics industries. In order to get high strength, the hot press forming should be accompanied by quenching process inducing phase transformation. In the study, the heat conductive die and the cooling channel were designed by the numerical simulation and the effect of three different parameters were determined to improve cooling characteristics.

  • The use of high strength steels are gradually increasing to reduce the weight of automobile to improve the environmental problems and collision safety. To encounter the traditional disadvantages of high strength steels like as a poor formability and high springback, hot press forming has been developed. By this method, the strength of steel sheet is increased about three times of original one through die quenching process. In order to the design of hot press forming tools by using numerical simulation, the knowledge of mechanical and microstructural characteristics are required. This study show the mechanical and microstructural characteristics of a high strength boron-alloyed steel according to the various quenching conditions.

  • The EV electric vehicle market is growing rapidly worldwide. An electric vehicle means a vehicle that uses energy charged through an electricity source as power. The precision of the press is important to mass-produce the drive motor, which is a key component of the electric vehicle. The size of the driving motor is increasing, and The size of the mold is also growing. In this study, the precision of large high-speed presses for mass production of driving motors was measured. A study was conducted on the measurement method of press and the analysis of measurement data. A drive motor is a component that transmits power by converting electrical energy into kinetic energy. EV driven motors have key material properties to improve efficiency. The material properties are the thickness of the material. As a method for improving performance, use a 0.2mm thin steel sheet. Mold is also becoming larger. As the mold grows, the size of the high-speed press for mass production of the driving motor is also increasing. Also, the precision of the press is the most important because it uses a thin iron plate material. So the importance of large press precision is being emphasized.   • To achieve rapid developments and cost savings in manufacturing industries including automotive die shops, new paradigm and its supporting systems of information managements through total product life cycle are needed for concurrent and collaborative engineering. For manufacturing of automotive press dies, integrated and efficient managements of PPR information including product, manufacturing process and resource are essential. In this paper, we introduce a PLM approach to achieve engineering collaborations in product development and production of automotive dies. To prove concepts and benefits of PPR information managements, we implement new business workflow and detail procedures, PPR information management system and other related applications. By PPR information managements in PLM, improvements in quality of engineering results and savings in time from design to production of dies are possible.

  • In the field of design and making tool for press working, the progressive die for very thick sheet metal(SS41, 4mm) is a specific division. In order to prevent the defects, the optimum design of the production part, Strip layout, die design, die making and tryout etc. are necessary. They require analysis of many kinds of important factors, i.e. theory and practice of metal working process and its phenomena, die structure, machining condition for die making, die materials, heat treatment of die component, know-how and so on. In this study, we designed and constructed a progressive die of multi stage and tried out through the I-DEAS, DEFORM, and CAD/CAM application. Out of these processes, the die development could be taken advanced technology. Especially the result of try out and its analysis become to the characteristic of this study.

  • In this paper, an effective design procedure was proposed to design the rib of die structure for auto-body member with ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) having ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1.5 GPa. From analysis results of the die structure, structural safety of the die was evaluated with information such as displacement and von-Mises stress. It was concluded that the casting part could be designed in order to reduce tool deformation. A design guideline of the die structure was proposed, especially for the rib structure in the casting part with an optimization scheme and local reinforcement concept. Simulation result following the design guideline fully explained that stability of the tool structure could be obtained simultaneously with weight minimization.

  • Sheet Metal Forming by Press Forming Process takes a lot of time and cost from mold design to manufacturing. Therefore, all of die-makers are continuously conducting research to reduce the number of mold processes or the size of blanks to reduce costs. In the case of Forming complex shapes such as automobile component, wrinkles and cracks occur, so draw beads are used. Draw beads play an important role in suppressing the inflow of materials and minimizing the size of blanks. Factors that affect material flow include draw bead, blank holding pressure, lubricant, and surface roughness of punch and die. Most of the factors affect friction. In this study, after classifying circular beads and rectangular beads in cylindrical drawing molds using the AutoForm analysis program, the factors affecting the material inflow were considered.

  • Profile machining using cutter diameter compensation is widely used in die and mould manufacturing. Especially automotive die makers try to use 3D-profile machining for trimming or flange dies. But the technological requirements and implementation issues haven't been defined. In this paper we summarized the requirements and issues of 3D-profile machining. Approximation of input profiles into sequences of line and helical arc is the first major issue. The second major issue is removing cutter inter- ference from the approximated curves holding z-values when the maximum cutter diameter is given. Keeping constant machining width, local machining, path linking problems and several detail technological requirements are also discussed.
