The Effects of Canola or Mustard Biodiesel Press Cake on Nutrient Digestibility and Performance of Broiler Chickens

  • This study compared the nutritional value of canola (B. napa) and mustard (B. hirta) press cakes obtained from the biodiesel industry as ingredients for use in diets fed to broiler chickens. A total of 210, one-day old, male broiler chicks were randomly assigned to one of seven dietary treatments. The control diet was based on wheat and soybean meal and contained 15% canola meal. For the experimental diets, 5, 10 or 15% of the canola meal was replaced with an equal amount of either canola or mustard biodiesel press cake. Dry matter and neutral detergent fiber digestibility were significantly higher for birds fed diets containing either canola or mustard biodiesel press cake compared with canola meal. Dry matter and neutral detergent fiber digestibility of the canola biodiesel press cakes was higher than the mustard biodiesel press cakes. Ether extract digestibility and nitrogen retention were significantly higher for birds fed canola biodiesel press cake compared with canola meal and mustard biodiesel press cake. Body weight gain and feed intake did not differ between birds fed canola or mustard biodiesel press cake and canola meal. In addition, there was no significant difference in body weight gain or feed intake between birds fed diets containing canola or mustard biodiesel press cake. Feed conversion was significantly improved for birds fed either canola or mustard biodiesel press cake compared with canola meal. Mortality was unaffected by treatment. Since the performance of broilers fed canola biodiesel press cakes was essentially the same as that of broilers fed canola meal, it is difficult to justify a premium to be paid for canola biodiesel press cake over that paid for canola meal. In addition, there was no difference in the performance of broilers fed biodiesel press cake obtained from canola or mustard seed. As mustard seeds are generally available at a lower price than canola seed, there may be some incentive to use mustard rather than canola seed for producing biodiesel press cake for use in poultry production.

열 탈수와 벨트프레스 탈수장치의 현장적용에 따른 탈수성 비교연구 (A Comparative Study on Thermal and Belt Press Dewatering for Waterworks Sludge Rduction)

  • 기존의 밸트프레스 탈수장치로부터 생산되는 탈수 케이크의 함수율이 75 wt% 이상으로 매우 높아 탈수 케이크 처리에 있어 경제적, 환경적 측면에서의 한계를 내포하고 있다. 이를 극복하기 위한 방안으로 구축된 열 탈수장치를 슬러지 처리 현장에 설치하여 밸트프레스 탈수장치와 탈수성능을 서로 비교함으로서 열 탈수장치의 적용성을 평가하였다. 이를 위해 우선 정수 슬러지에 대한 탈수특성을 월별로 분석하였다. 1년 중 갈수기의 슬러지에는 유기물 함량이 높아 탈수가 어려운 반면 우수기의 슬러지는 유기물 함량이 낮아 탈수가 잘 되었다. 이와 같은 슬러지의 탈수 특성을 바탕으로 1년 동안 두 장치에 대한 슬러지의 탈수 특성을 비교한 결과, 갈수기의 슬러지에 대하여 열 탈수로 생산한 탈수 케이크 함수율은 $41.6{\sim}48.3$ wt%, 기계식 벨트프레스에 의해서는 $71{\sim}84$ wt%, 우수기의 경우 열 탈수에 의해 생산된 탈수 케이크 함수율은 $34{\sim}37.7$ wt%, 기계식 벨트프레스에 의해서는 $57{\sim}70$ wt%로 나타났다. 열탈수에 의한 함수율 저감이 현격하게 나타나는 것을 파악하였다. 탈수 케이크 함수율 저감에 따른 케이크 처리량 감소 등을 고려하여 두 장치에 대한 경제성을 평가한 결과 열 탈수의 비용 지수를 100으로 하였을 때 벨트프레스는 121, 즉 열 탈수는 벨트프레스에 비하여 설치 및 운용적인 측면에서 약 20% 이상 경제적인 효과 있는 것으로 분석되었으며, 필터프레스의 경우 11%, 데칸터의 경우 24% 경제적 이점이 있는 것으로 평가되었다. 결론적으로 열 탈수장치는 저 함수율 탈수 케이크를 생산할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 장치 운용 비용이 저렴한 시스템으로 평가되었다.

  • 케이크 여과에서 케이크에 대한 정의가 아직 마련되어 있지 않다. 특히 침전된 플럭(floc)의 여과에서는 케이크를 전혀 정의하지 못하였다. 본 연구에서는 '여과-투과(filtration-permeation)' 실험을 사용하여 모든 경우의 케이크를 명확히 정의하였다. 이 케이크의 정의에 대한 고찰을 통해 케이크 여과에 의해 이룩될 수 있는 케이크 함수량의 한계에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 여과에 의해 형성된 케이크의 수분 함량을 줄이기 위한 압착조작(expression) 과정을 '고액분리 통합이론'으로 계산하고 실제 압착조작 데이터와 비교하였다. 여과와 압착조작 전체를 분석하여, 압착의 중요성을 검토했다. 그리고 회분식으로 조작되는 필터 프레스의 케이크 배출과 세척시간을 포함하여 가장 효율적인 조작조건을 계산하는 방법을 제안하였다.

Infiltration characteristic of modified slurry and support efficiency of filter cake in silty sand strata

  • To improve the understanding of infiltration characteristic of modified slurry and the support efficiency of filter cake in silty sand strata, the slurry infiltration (SI) and filter cake formation (FCF) were investigated in a laboratory apparatus. The water discharge and the excess pore pressure at different depths of silty sand strata were measured during SI. The relationship between permeability coefficient/thickness ratio of filter cake (kc/ΔL) and effective slurry pressure conversion rate of filter cake (η) were analyzed. Moreover, the SI and FCF process as well as the modification mechanism of CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose) were clarified. The experimental results indicate the formation of only external filter cake in the silty sand strata. The slurry particles obtain thicker water membrane after being modified by CMC, which blocks partial water path in filter cake and decreases the water discharge significantly. The silty sand excavated from tunnel face also contributes to the water discharge reduction. The kc of the external filter cake ranges from 3.83×10-8 cm/s to 7.44×10-8 cm/s. The η of the external filter cake is over 96%, which decreases with increasing kc/ΔL. A silty sand content within 10% is suggested during construction to ensure the uniformity of the filter cake.

EFFECT OF ADDITIONS OF POTASSIUM AND NITROGEN INTO PRESS CAKE ON MAGNESIUM UTILIZATION OF GOATS WITH RELATION TO WATER INTAKE

  • In a study about minerals cycling in grassland agro-ecosystem, investigation on relations among two minerals, potassium(K) and magnesium(Mg), and nitrogen(N) was performed. Four kinds of diets different in K and N levels were fed to four goats with a Latin-square method and $2{\times}2$ factorial design. As the basal diet, press cake silage prepared from Italian ryegrass was used because of its uniformity and comparatively low mineral concentrations. Supplementation of K and N were made using potassium bicarbonate and urea. In the experiment, it was clearly shown that high K concentration in the forage crops is the main reason of the low utilization of Mg in ruminant animals. However, high nitrogen intake resulted in the increase of magnesium retention, urinary potassium excretion, water intake and volume of urine and in the decreases of potassium intake minus urinary potassium excretion. The results of high nitrogen intake seemed to be produced in the following order;increase of urine, increase of water intake, increase of urinary potassium excretion, and decrease of intake minus urinary potassium excretion. The amount of potassium intake minus urinary potassium excretion had significantly close relationships with magnesium utilization and serum magnesium concentration. As a conclusion, higher nitrogen intake by ruminants seemed to be preferable for magnesium utilization through increased water intake and urinary potassium excretion, if the sufficient drinking water could be supplied to ruminants.

OVERCOMING THE NUTRITIONAL LIMITATIONS OF RICE STRAW FOR RUMINANTS 3. UREA AMMONIA UPGRADING OF STRAW AND SUPPLEMENTATION WITH RICE BRAN AND COCONUT CAKE FOR GROWING RULLS

  • Forty eight growing bulls of two breed types(red Sahiwal and white Kilari), fed rice straw, were allocated to nine treatment groups: 1. Control straw (CS) 2. Urea upgraded straw (UUS) 3. UUS + 0.25 kg coconut cake (CC) 4. UUS + 0.75 kg CC 5. UUS + 0.25 kg rice bran (RB) 6. UUS + 1.00 kg RB 7. UUS + 0.25 kg RB + 0.25 kg CC 8. UUS + 1.00 kg RB + 0.25 kg CC 9. CS + 1.00 kg RB + 0.25 kg CC Liveweight gain was measured weekly during 15 weeks and tested in three analyses of variance. The results are: Urea upgraded straw produced a liveweight gain $180g.d^{-1}$ higher (P <0.01) than control straw. The groups supplemented with 0.25 kg coconut cake and 1.00 kg rice bran showed an increase of $100g.d^{-1}$ (p < 0.05) over the unsupplemented groups. No interaction between straw upgrading and supplementation was present (P > 0.10). Both rice bran and coconut press cake, supplemented to upgraded straw at a level of 0.25 kg, did not increase liveweight gain (P>0.05), but 1.0 kg rice bran increased gain by $90g.d^{-1}$ (P<0.05). A supplement of 0.75 kg coconut press cake to upgraded straw increased liveweight gain by $160g.d^{-1}$ compared with 0.25 kg or 0.00 kg coconut cake supplement (P<0.05). There were no significant differences between breed types (P>0.10) or interactions between breed and the other two main treatments (upgrading and supplementation). It was concluded. that both urea upgrading and supplementation of rice straw increase animal performance. The effect of urea upgrading was the same for both supplemented and unsupplemented animals. There was no indication of a nonlinear effect of supplements on growth.

고효율 열 탈수장치 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study for Developing the Thermal Dehydrator)

  • A generation rate of sludge in Korea had increased dramatically about $200\%$ for a decade. A requirement for high efficiency dewatering system being possible to produce the low water content cake have suggested due to the appearance of commercial and social problems about handling of dewatered cake. The conventional dewatering system with mechanical compression device was not suitable to produce the low water content cake and didn't cope with lots of requirements. Therefore, this paper was to develop the high efficient filter press with the compressive and heating forces through the heating plate to be built between membrane fillet plates. It is possible to produce the low water content cake and improve the dewatering rate, so this equipment positively coped with several types of problems related to the sludge dewatering. The plate heated by heat transfer materials such as steam, hot water and thermo-oil made the sludge make the residual moisture within the cake to discharge easily and to improve the dewatering efficiency of equipment. The pilot scale experiment with 500kg of cake production showed that the dewatering efficiency determined by the final water content and dewatering velocity was improved $30\%$ more than the conventional dewatering equipment.

In vitro Fermentation, Digestion Kinetics and Methane Production of Oilseed Press Cakes from Biodiesel Production

  • Following the extraction of oil for biodiesel production, oilseed press cakes are high in fat. As the dietary supplementation of fat is currently considered the most promising strategy of consistently depressing methanogenesis, it follows that oilseed press cakes may have a similar potential for $CH_4$ abatement. As such, this study aimed to characterise the nutritive value of several oilseed press cakes, glycerine and soybean meal (SBM) and to examine their effects on in vitro ruminal fermentation, digestion kinetics and $CH_4$ production. Moringa press oil seeds exhibited the greatest in sacco effective degradability (ED) of DM and CP (p<0.05). In vitro gas production (ml/g digested DM) was not affected (p = 0.70) by supplement at 48 h of incubation. In vitro DMD was increased with the supplementation of glycerine and SBM at all levels of inclusion. Moringa oilseed press cakes produced the lowest $CH_4$ (mg/g digested DM) at 6 and 12 h of incubation (p<0.05). The findings suggest that moringa oilseed press cake at 400 g/kg DM has the greatest potential of the oilseed press cakes examined in this study, to reduce $CH_4$ production, without adversely affecting nutrient degradability.

정수슬러지 탈수효율 향상을 위한 전기필터프레스탈수에 관한 연구 (A Study on Electrodewatering Filter Press Technology for Improvement of Dewarterability of Waterworks Sludge)

  • 정수 슬러지의 감량화와 탈수장치의 성능향상을 위하여 필터프레스 탈수장치의 각 Plate 사이에 음극판과 양극판을 설치하여 케이크 층에 전기장을 투입하는 전기식 필터프레스 탈수장치(EDFP)를 구축하여 기존의 기계식 필터프레스 탈수장치(MDEF)와의 탈수성 비교, 그리고 EDFP의 탈수성 향상에 따른 경제적인 측면 등을 분석하였다. 동일조건에서 탈수실험을 수행한 결과 EDFP를 통해 배출된 여액량은 43.2 kg으로 MDFP에 비하여 증가하였으며, 케이크 무게는 4 kg으로 MDFP에 비해 2배 증가하였고 탈수 케이크의 함수율은 55 wt%로 MDFP에 비하여 약 20% 감소하였으며 탈수속도는 2.3 $kg/m^2{\cdot}cycle$로 약 30% 증가하였다. 즉 전기탈수(Electrodewatering)의 원리로 구축된 EDFP는 기계탈수(Mechanical Dewatering)에 의한 MDFP 비하여 여액배출량을 증가시키고 저함수율 탈수 케이크를 생산하며 탈수속도를 증가시키는 특성이 있다. EDFP의 소모된 전력량은 400 kwh/DS ton으로, 투입된 전력량과 저함수율 탈수 케이크 생산에 따른 부피 감소로 인한 처리경비 저하의 효과를 서로 고려하여 경제성을 분석한 결과 1 ton(Dry Solid base) 처리하는데 약 20,000원 경제적 절감 효과가 있었다. 이 외 탈수속도가 빨라진 부가적 이점을 감안하면, EDFP는 탈수 성능 면에서 우수할 뿐만 아니라 경제적 타당성이 있는 장치로 평가할 수 있다.
