  • The social activities of the elderly are important in successfully achieving aging by providing opportunities for social interaction to enhance life satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to identify the related factors of the elderly social activities and build a statistical classification model to predict social activities. Subjects were 1,864 elderly people (829 males, 1,035 females) who completed the community health survey in 2015. Outcome variables were defined as the experience of social activity during the past month(yes, no). The prediction model was constructed using decision tree model based on Classification and Regression Trees (CRT) algorithm. The results of this study were subjective health, frequency of meeting with neighbors, frequency of meeting with relatives, and living with spouse were significant variables of social participation. The most prevalent predictor was the subjective health level. In order to prepare for the successful aging of the super aged society based on the results of this study, social attention and support for the social activities of the elderly are required.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify characteristics of well-aging related research conducted in Korea and to analyze the concept definition to present the direction for future well-aging research in Korea. As a research method, an integrated literature review suggested by Whittemore & Knafl was conducted. Study results found research conducted in Korea consisted of 2 literature reviews, case studies, qualitative studies, 3 survey studies, and 2 experimental studies. In addition, there were 3 studies performed prior to 2017 and 8 studies after that included 2 dissertations and 9 dissertations in academic journals. The definition of well aging consisted of physical, emotional, social, economic, and self-realization aspects. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to provide education and programs according to life cycles to prepare well aging, and in the future, well-aging studies should be conducted in various academic fields.

  • The purpose of this study was to prepare Daebong persimmon-fermented liquor supplemented with Prunus mume fruit to promote the consumption of Daebong persimmon and to develop local specialties. As fermentation progressed, the alcohol content rapidly increased, whereas the sugar content decreased. With the production of CO2 from the second day of fermentation, the epidermis and flesh solids of the Daebong persimmons began mixing together and rose to the surface of the fermentation container. This phenomenon continued until the fourth and fifth days of fermentation; on the fifth day, the ethanol and sugar contents were 11.4% and 9.8°Brix, respectively. A concentration of 6 to 9% (w/w) P. mume fruit was found to be the optimal amount during Daebong persimmon fermentation. When the fermented liquor was stored for 60 days at 5℃, the pH and ethanol content showed no significant change during the aging period. As aging progressed, the content of sugar slowly decreased in both the control sample and in the one to which P. mume was added, showing 9.8 and 10.4 mg/ml at the eighth week post-aging, respectively. The total acid content was 0.79~0.81% at the beginning of aging but slightly increased to 0.84~0.86% in the second week of aging. As a result of the sensory test, the sour taste, sweetness, and flavor were slightly stronger in the P. mume fruit group than in the control group.

  • Facing the aging society in Korea, the necessity of the facility for the elderly is arising as a substitute to cut down the cost and to provide suitable and skillful medical services for the aged and chronical. Among there, health care facilities for the elderly with dementia are considered a essential facility. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare the guidelines for planning and design of the facility. On the bases of survey and analysis, the basic data for planning and design the hospital for the elderly with dementia has been proposed.

  • With its rapid modernization and unparalleled speed of aging, South Korea faces the need for dramatic increase in its supply of nursing homes. Among the spacial components of nursing homes, residential units are considered as an essential part because the older person in nursing homes usually spend most of their time in residential units and the nursing homes are mainly composed of various residential units. It is necessary, therefore, to prepare a guideline for the plan of residential units in order to design the healthy and efficient nursing homes. This paper has first identified the concept of residential unit and analyzed 66 cases in the 62 nursing homes from 4 countries. And 4 nursing homes in Korea have been surveyed for the in-depth study. On the basis of this analysis, architectural prototypes of residential units have been proposed and the architectural characteristics of them have been compared analytically.

  • Echinodorus cordifolius (L.) is an aquatic plant in the family Alismataceae. The anti-skin aging activity of E. cordifolius (L.) has not been yet reported. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to prepare 70% ethanol extract (ECEE) from E. cordifolius (L.) and investigate their antioxidant and anti-hyaluronidase activities for confirm the potential of anti-skin aging. ECEE showed good activities of DPPH, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, and hyaluronidase inhibition, with EC50 and IC50 values of 31.4, 300, and 450 ㎍/mL, respectively. ECEE also significantly improved cell viability and inhibited intracellular reactive oxygen species dose-dependently against 1 mM hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress in immortalized human keratinocytes (HaCaT cells). Furthermore, ECEE upregulated hyaluronic acid (HA)-synthesizing enzyme hyaluronan synthase 2 (HAS2) expression level, but downregulated expression level of HA-degrading enzyme hyaluronidase 2, resulting in increased HA production in HaCaT cells. Taken together, these results suggest that ECEE shows antioxidant and anti-hyaluronidase potential and could be a functional cosmetic ingredients for anti-skin aging.

  • With the unparalleled rate of aging and rapid modernization, Korean society faces the situation in which it has to increase the supply of elderly care services dramatically in the near future. Among these services, nursing homes are considered as an essential alternative provision because Korea can no longer rely on traditional familism nor medical facilities for the care of her older population. It is necessary, therefore, to prepare a future plan for the delivery of nursing homes in Korea. This paper has identified elderly care context and analyzed elderly care facilities of Korea in the point of supply and utilization rate of nursing homes according to the region and type of facilities. On the bases of this analysis, the delivery planning of nursing homes in Korea has been proposed in order to increase welfare status of older people and efficient utilization of health care resources.

  • The re-unification of the two Koreas is seen as a potential solution to the aging problem and low fertility, along with the increase in the old population structure of the Republic of Korea. Population structure is an indicator of national competitiveness or growth, but little is known officially about the populations of Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). Understanding the population structure of the DPRK is important to prepare for re-unification and estimate the socio-economic costs of national welfare under a re-unified Korea. In this paper, we assess reliability of the two modern national censuses of DPRK and use the limited resources available to reconstruct the intercensal populations between these two censuses. Excess deaths from the 1995 famine are estimated at 489,972 to 574,306 and are close to the estimates of Goodkind et al. (2011) and the reconstructed populations in the of DPRK implies a big difference between two Koreas.

  • This paper analyzes how and why household debt distribution by the householder age has changed over the past decade both in Korea and the US. Data shows that the proportion of household debt held by younger households has decreased, while that held by older households has increased. Empirical analysis shows that a change in the demographic distribution of householders is the main driving force that has shifted the household debt distribution. Given that demographic aging is an inevitable trend, the proportion of household debt held by older households is also expected to increase. Therefore, the Korean government must preemptively prepare for the household debt problem, especially for debt held by older households, by strengthening macro-prudential policies, preventing asset price deflation, restructuring household debt contract structures, and reforming labor market inflexibility.
