Premed education in the college of medicine at the Catholic University of Korea aims to promote student creativity and excellence in accordance with the mission of the college: to have a sense of calling, leadership, and competency. The Catholic Medical College premed curriculum includes 75 credits which are composed of 65 credits for required courses and 10 credits for elective courses. It consists of courses in basic science, medical science, liberal arts and humanities (premedical OMNIBUS). It also involves community programs in 'Vision and Mission,' 'Leadership Training,' and 'Academic Conference.' In addition, students are allowed self-directed choice of their courses and learning for one quarter.
Angiotensiri-I converting enzyme(ACE) catalyst the removal of the C-terminal dipeptide from the angiotensin-I to give the angiotensin-II, a potent peptide that causes constriction of regulation of blood pressure. Recently, ACE inhibitor peptides have been isolated from enzymatic digests of food protein. The aim of this study was to identify bovine casein hydrolysates with ACE inhibitory properties in different enzymatic hydrolysis conditions. The casein were hydrolyzed neutrase, alcalase, protamax, flavourzyme, premed 192, sumizyme MP, sumizyme LP and pescalase alone and with an enzyme combination. Premed 192 produced ACE inhibitory peptides most efficiently. In order to ACE inhibitory peptide produced enzymatic hydrolysis condition were premed 192 added to casein ratio of 1:100(w/w), and incubated at 47$\^{C}$ for 12hrs. Casein hydrolysate gave 50% inhibition(IC$\_$50/ value) of ACE activity at concentration with 248ug/ml(general method) and 265ug/ml(pretreatment method) respectively.
Background: Because premed students do not take courses related to medicine during their first 2 years, they cannot establish their identity as students at medical schools, making it difficult for them to set goals as future doctors. We conducted an early clinical and basic laboratory exposure program for premed students and studied the effects of the program and student satisfaction levels. Methods: We performed an early clinical and basic laboratory exposure program for premed students for 2 days and evaluated the effects of the program and student satisfaction with it. The program consisted of two types: type 1, where two to four students formed a group, which was assigned to a particular department to participate and make observations during ward rounds, outpatient clinics, examinations, procedures, and surgeries (in the case of basic laboratory work, the students partook in experimental observations); and type 2, where one student followed a medical school professor to observe the professor's day. After the program ended, an online survey was conducted to investigate the effects on students, their thoughts, and satisfaction levels. Results: In total, 114 students (91.2%) responded to the survey. Approximately 94% of them were satisfied with the program. They found that the program would be useful for deciding on future career paths, gaining knowledge about a department of interest, studying for a medical program after premedical studies, and befriending residents and professors in certain departments. Conclusion: Early clinical and basic laboratory exposure programs are recommended for premedical students.
The educational goal of premedical education is to provide the desired college-level training in liberal arts as well as sciences, and to equip students with a basis for future medical studies. The purpose of this study was to introduce a premedical curriculum at Chonnam National University Medical School and to provide baseline data for developing an improved premedical curriculum. The reformed premedical curriculum has been followed since 2017. Formal premedical curriculum consists of basic education and character education through liberal arts study and major courses related to medical education. In addition to the formal premedical curriculum, students are supported through various programs that help develop interpersonal and intrapersonal competences.
An immunocytochemical study of GABA-positive neuronal elements was performed at the electron microscopic level to examine subcellular distribution of the inhibitory neurotransmitter in the dog basilar pons. Electron-dense reaction product was observed in neuronal somata and dendritic processes. One or more unlabeled axon terminals made asymmetric synaptic contacts with these GABAergic somatic and dendritic profiles. A large number of GABA-positive axon terminals were also observed. They made symmetric as well as asymmetric synaptic contacts with unlabeled dendritic profiles. In axo-axonic synapses, postsynaptic axon-like processes were consistently GABA-immunoreactive. These observations suggest that the inhibitory local circuit neurons in the dog basilar pons play a major role in cerebro-ponto-cerebellar circuitry by integrating various afferent inputs and conveying them into the cerebellar cortex and the deep cerebellar nuclei.
Objectives : There has been a need for establishing operational curriculum for chinese characters and chinese writing used by traditional Korean medicine(TKM), but it was not thoroughly recognized so far. Methods : We analysed the usage of unicode chinese characters of acupuncture & moxibustion textbook to recognize the prerequisite chinese characters for TKM studies as clinical perspectives. Results : It was found that 穴, 經, 鍼, 法, 寸, 部, 分, 刺, 下, 上, 中, 位, 氣, 陽, 灸, 脈, 陰, 治, 足, 主 are the most frequently used 20 chinese characters. We also showed that adequate prerequisite chinese character should be designated for the more efficient education of TKM. Conclusions : This study was the first systematic approach to get essential and prerequisite chinese characters for the education of TKM especially for the acupuncture & moxibustion. The prerequisite characters by this study will be used for the development of KEET (Korean Medicine Education Eligibility Test), entrance exam to the Colleges of Oriental Medicine and textbooks, and educational curriculum of premed students.
Background: Although breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common malignant diseases in women, the majority of the studies describing the characteristics of BC in elderly patients have been limited to survival assessments or tumor features, without using younger BC patients as a reference group. The aim of our study was to describe and compare tumor characteristics and management patterns in elderly versus younger breast cancer patients in Turkey. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 152 patients with invasive breast cancer who underwent surgery in our institution between 2002 and 2012. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to age at the time of diagnosis. Results: There were 62 patients in the elderly group (${\geq}65$ years) and 90 patients in the younger group (<65 years). Compared to the younger group, tumors in the elderly group were more likely to be larger (p=0.018), of lower grade (p=0.005), and hormone receptor-positive (p>0.001). There were no significant differences regarding histology, localization, lymph node involvement, or types of surgical procedures between the 2 groups. Comorbidities were more common in elderly patients (p<0.001). In addition, elderly patients were more likely to receive hormonal therapy (p<0.001) and less likely to receive radiotherapy (p=0.08) and chemotherapy (p=0.003). There was no difference in survival and locoregional recurrence rates between the groups. Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate that breast cancer in elderly patients has more favorable tumor features, warranting less aggressive treatment regimens after surgery.

There has been a need for an operational curriculum for teaching Chinese characters used by traditional Korean medicine (TKM), but the it was not thoroughly reviewed so far. We analysed the frequency of unicode Chinese characters with five textbooks of traditional Korean medicine used as a national standard. We found that 氣, 經, 陽, 陰, 不, 熱, 血, 脈, 病, 證, 寒, 中, 心, 痛, 虛, 大, 生, 治, 本, 之 are the 20 most frequently used Chinese characters, and also showed 100 frequently used characters for each textbook. We used a cumulative frequency analysis method to suggest a list of 1,000 prerequisite Chinese characters for the TKM education (TKM 1000). which represents the current usage of Chinese characters in TKM and covers 99% of all textbook use if combined with MEST 1800. This study showed prerequisite and essential Chinese characters for the implementation of evidence-based teaching in TKM. The TKM 1000, a prerequisite characters by this study based on the TKM textbooks can be used for the development of Korean Medicine Education Eligibility Test (KEET), entrance exam to the Colleges of Oriental Medicine or textbooks, and educational curriculum for premed students.
