A preliminary design process in the multi-stage gear drives design is important part. a preliminary design support system which run efficiently the design is developed with fuzzy expert system. the system automatically generate the mechanism of multi-stats gear drives and select a candidate mechanism by the general expert rule and sorting using fuzzy expert system. the preliminary mechanism design of multi-stage gear drives have a short execution time, add accuracy in a preliminary design considering volume, cost, power and efficiency in preliminary, a design efficiency is increased and a preliminary design have a elasticity using a weight on variable's sorting mechanism.
The paper describes the preliminary ship design method using deterministic approach and probabilistic approach. In deterministic approach, there are computational aspects to applying not only the integration concurrently of principal dimension decisions and hull form variations but also hydrostatic coefficients that applied to optimization iterative process. Therefore, this paper developed that actual design concept at the preliminary ship design more than sequential design which separated in principal dimension decisions and hull form variations. Furthermore, a probabilistic approach at the preliminary ship design is applied to efficiently solve design information uncertainty that compared to deterministic approach.

In the standards, minimum reinforcement ratios are presented as the least reinforcement ratios that bearing elements should have in a way to include all systems and in general. However, naturally these general minimum ratios might be presented as being lower than the normally required reinforcement ratios by criteria such as system size, bearing system arrangement, section situation and distributions of the elements and earthquake effect. In this case, minimum reinforcement ratios may remain as meaningless restrictions. Then grouping the criterion that might affect reinforcement ratios according to certain parameters and creating minimum reinforcement ratios regarding preliminary design will provide ease and safety during the project designing. Moreover, it will enable fast and simple examinations in the beginning of project control and evaluation process. By means of the data which could be defined as "preliminary design & minimum reinforcement ratios", a more realistic and safe restriction compared to general minimum reinforcement ratios could be presented. As a result of numerous comprehensive studies, reinforcement ratios to include all certain systems might be obtained. Today, thanks to the development level of finite elements programs which can make reinforced concrete modelling, with the studies that are impossible to carry out beforehand, this deficiency in the minimum reinforcement ratios in the standarts may at least be partially made up with the advisory regulation of preliminary design & minimum reinforcement ratios. As the structure of the system to be examined and the diversity of the parameters range from the specific to the general, preliminary design & minimum reinforcement ratios will approximate to general minimum reinforcement ratios in real terms. By focusing on a more specific system structure and diversity of the parameters, preliminary design and even design reinforcement ratios will be approximated. In this preliminary study, a route between these two extremes was attempted to be followed. Today, it is possible to determine suggested practical ratios for project designs through carrying out numerous studies.
The development of computer-integrated design systems that fully support structural design process needs the computerization of structural design at the preliminary design stage. The objective of this paper is to develop a prototype system for preliminary design of reinforced concrete structures. This study focuses on the development of a natural design process oriented GUI(Graphic User Interface) and a representation of an experienced knowledge. The prototype system has been currently implemented using the objected-oriented programming concepts, the program language(i.e.,Visual C++) and the expert shell(i.e., Intelligent Rules Element).
The objective of this study is to present and to analyze preliminary orientation design factors in the design stage of sustainable architecture in the viewpoint of technocentrism. Typically people interpret solar energy system architecture as simply being part of a mechanical system. Yet, even before considering energy-consuming physical systems in buildings, it is very important to consider the outer parameters of sustainable design factors and the design process itself for the effective and suitable energy-saving design methodology. By analyzing the evolving phases and history of technocentrism and solar energy systems in sustainable architecture through examples and case studies, this paper focuses on and proposes preliminary orientation design factors that should be considered when starting the architectural design process in the viewpoint of technocentrism.
At the preliminary design stage, the orientations of laminae in a laminate are not known. This fact discourages the most of engineers from the beginning. If the quasi-isotropic constants are used, it halps the design engineer greatly to start his work. If conventional mechanics and elasticity theories can be used, the effort for design and analysis is greatly reduced. This paper reports the possibility of using the classical mechanics at the preliminary design stage for the laminated composite primary structure for civil construction. The result is quite promissing.
The preliminary stage of structural design is very crucial step whose results have great effects on the structural performance, construction, economy, and aesthetics through the following design stages. However, it is extremely difficult to computerize the information and knowledge used in the preliminary design stage because it lacks of formality of representation of designers' experience and intuition. To address such issue the concept of an artificial neural network has been adopted to develop preliminary design system for cable-stayed bridges in this paper. The artificial neural network has been proved that it has the ability of learning design experience and providing a good design alternative.
This study introduces the design methods for air flow distribution at the level of preliminary design, and reviews the typical combustion process and main functions of sub-components of aircraft gas turbine combustors. There are lots of design approaches and empirical equations introduced for air flow distributions at the combustors. It is shown that a decision on which design approaches work for the combustor development is totally dependent upon the objective of engine design, target performance, and so on. The current results suggested for preliminary air flow distributions need to be validated by combustor geometry checkups and performance evaluations for future works.
In this paper, we present the result of preliminary design of tracking mount for ARGO-M which is a movable satellite laser ranging (SLR) system developed by Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). The tracking mount consists of a couple of core parts such as driving motors, encoders and bearings, and the requirements of each parts are determined on the basis of the technical consideration. 2D and 3D models for tracking mount were preliminarily designed using the selected core parts. In order to evaluate the validity of the preliminarily design, the simulator to test the elevation axis was designed and manufactured. The test to check the tracking performance and system accuracy of the simulator was performed, and it was confirmed that the preliminary design meets the operating specifications. Additionally, it was found that the repetitive errors and hysteresis errors need to be improved by the additional control algorithm.
