  • For the successful development of 75-tonf-class liquid rocket engine, a plenty of tests on each engine component have to be performed and this is equally true for a combustor. However the test facility which is in operation at Korea Aerospace Research Institute lacks its capacity to perform fire tests of a 75 tonf class combustor at its nominal thrust. Since the test facility has to be ready prior to the start of development tests, it is very urgent to establish the test facility. The preliminary design of a test facility for a 75 tonf class combustor which was performed according to such a necessity is described in the paper.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the water spraying which can effectively by applied to the control or suppression of the fugitive dust generated from the scrap metal handling area at the Port of Inchon. As a first step toward this goal, we carried out some preliminary analyses on the chemical composition, physical shape, and particle size distribution of the sample dust. Next, to quantitatively investigate the effect of adding surfactants to the spraying water on the wettability of the sample dust, the Standard Sink Test was carried out for four different surfactants and at six different concentrations using the surfactants considered in this study. Results of from the preliminary analysis indicated that the main chemical component consisting of the sample dust is Goethite(FeO(OH)) and that the particles smaller than 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in geometric diameter occupy about 36% of the sample dust in mass. This result implies that the fugitive dust generated from the scrap metal handling area at the Port of Inchon should affect the environment nearby more than we have expected. This is because of relatively large mass percentage of the small metal particles less than 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in geometric diameter, what we may call respirable particles. As for the results of the Standard Sink Test, higher surfactant concentration tends to result in the higher wettability of the sample dust for the surfactants considered in this study, which in turn ensures the high particle collection efficiency of the droplets generated from the water spraying system. Based upon this preliminary results, studies to develop more sophisticated scaled model for dynamic test in underway and the effort to find the best surfactants as well as the optimum operating conditions are being made at the same time.

  • In this study, we developed and examined the validity and reliability of the Test for Indicators of Positive Experiences about Science (TIPES) that measures students' positive experiences about science. We have developed TIPES through literature reviews, development of the preliminary version of TIPES, a pilot test and revisions of the preliminary version, and the test of the final version. Through literature reviews and Delpi methods, we developed the preliminary version of TIPES, which consists of five categories such as science academic emotion, science-related self-concept, science learning motivation, science-related career aspiration, and science-related attitude. Using the preliminary version, we conducted a pilot test with 198 students consisting of 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th graders, and modified the first version based on the results from the pilot test and expert meetings. We then conducted a main test with the revised version of TIPES with 1,841 students consisting of 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th graders. According to a confirmatory factor analysis, a reliability test and descriptive statistics analyses, TIPES found to have a good validity as well as reliability. In addition, there are statistically significant differences in the norm distribution and scores of TIPES by student's grade, gender, school location, and level of participation in science-related activities. Discussed in the conclusion are the implications of this research for science education research and science teaching and learning practices in the school.

  • In this study, we conducted preliminary survey, diagnostic test and in-depth interview in order to study Korean pre-service chemistry teachers' understanding on entropy and investigate how Korean pre-service chemistry teachers deal with the natural phenomenon which is related to entropy conceptions. Firstly, as a result of the preliminary survey, it was found that pre-service chemistry teachers strongly recognized entropy as the degree of disorder. Secondly, the diagnostic test showed pre-service chemistry teachers were mostly confused about whether the entropy of the universe increases during a spontaneous change, and they had a tendency to interpret the natural phenomenon related to entropy change as the change of disorder. Finally, during in-depth interview, after we explained entropy change in all diagnostic test questions with the concept of microstate, pre-service chemistry teachers revealed a better understanding about entropy. Through this research, pre-service chemistry teachers had an opportunity to reflect on their deficiencies of entropy conceptions, which will ultimately help students to approach the concept of entropy more correctly.

  • Purpose: The practical examination portion of the National Dental Licensing Examination (NDLE) is slated to be administered in the latter half of 2021 in the form of a clinical performance examination that comprehensively evaluates the patient-dentist interaction using standardized patients (SPs). The SPs should be equipped with the basic qualities and capacity as evaluators for a fair and reliable administration of the test. Materials and Methods: In this study, we analyzed the existing training materials for SPs who participated in domestic and overseas practical tests for the development of training materials for SPs through seminars and surveys of 11 dentistry schools and colleges. Result: First, SPs should be selected according to the basic quality criteria and capacity, which they must possess, and the preliminary basic training about the details which they must have knowledge of and be provided through videorecorded cases before the implementation of the preliminary field training. Second, the roles of SPs and the calibration process of the evaluation result forms are needed when conducting the preliminary field training for SPs. After watching video-recorded scenario cases, the SPs participate in discussions about the watched videos before proceeding to calibration practices of evaluation result forms. Third, because the Type A questionnaire of the practical examination of the NDLE is dependent on the SPs' capacity and training, the fairness of the practical test is largely dependent on the SPs. Therefore, practicing the roles as evaluators and evaluation training should be provided using practical test items that can improve the reliability of the test and show a high level of reproducibility about the same case. Conclusion: The findings of this study will be utilized for the development of training materials for SPs, so they can participate in the administration of a fair and reliable practical examination of the NDLE.
