  • The machine learning algorithm has been widely used in water-related fields such as water resources, water management, hydrology, atmospheric science, water quality, water level prediction, weather forecasting, water discharge prediction, water quality forecasting, etc. However, water quality prediction studies based on the machine learning algorithm are limited compared to other water-related applications because of the limited water quality data. Most of the previous water quality prediction studies have predicted monthly water quality, which is useful information but not enough from a practical aspect. In this study, we predicted the dissolved oxygen (DO) using recurrent neural network with long short-term memory model recurrent neural network long-short term memory (RNN-LSTM) algorithms with hourly- and daily-datasets. Bugok Bridge in Oncheoncheon, located in Busan, where the data was collected in real time, was selected as the target for the DO prediction. The 10-month (temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity) data were used as time prediction inputs, and the 5-year (temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, and rainfall) data were used as the daily forecast inputs. Missing data were filled by linear interpolation. The prediction model was coded based on TensorFlow, an open-source library developed by Google. The performance of the RNN-LSTM algorithm for the hourly- or daily-based water quality prediction was tested and analyzed. Research results showed that the hourly data for the water quality is useful for machine learning, and the RNN-LSTM algorithm has potential to be used for hourly- or daily-based water quality forecasting.

  • To improve the performance of the prediction system, the system should reflect well the uncertainty of nonlinear data. Thus, this paper presents multiple prediction systems based on Type-2 fuzzy sets. To construct each prediction system, an Interval Type-2 TSK Fuzzy Logic System and difference data were used, because, in general, it has been known that the Type-2 Fuzzy Logic System can deal with the uncertainty of nonlinear data better than the Type-1 Fuzzy Logic System, and the difference data can provide more steady information than that of original data. Also, to improve each rule base of the fuzzy prediction systems, the HCBKA (Hierarchical Correlation Based K-means clustering Algorithm) was applied because it can consider correlationship and statistical characteristics between data at a time. Subsequently, to alleviate complexity of the proposed prediction system, a system selection method was used. Finally, this paper analyzed and compared the performances between the Type-1 prediction system and the Interval Type-2 prediction system using simulations of three typical time series examples.

  • The prediction of the sum of container is very important in the field of container transport. Many influencing factors can affect the prediction results. These factors are usually composed of many variables, whose composition is often very complex. In this paper, we use gray relational analysis to set up a proper forecast index system for the prediction of the sum of containers in foreign trade. To address the issue of the low accuracy of the traditional prediction models and the problem of the difficulty of fully considering all the factors and other issues, this paper puts forward a prediction model which is combined with a back-propagation (BP) neural networks and the support vector machine (SVM). First, it gives the prediction with the data normalized by the BP neural network and generates a preliminary forecast data. Second, it employs SVM for the residual correction calculation for the results based on the preliminary data. The results of practical examples show that the overall relative error of the combined prediction model is no more than 1.5%, which is less than the relative error of the single prediction models. It is hoped that the research can provide a useful reference for the prediction of the sum of container and related studies.

  • This paper evaluates the performance of three methods for predicting resources requested by mobile's calls and a call admission algorithm based on these predicting methods respectively in wireless networks. The first method is based on Wiener prediction model and the second method is based on the MMOSPRED algorithm and the third method is based on the neural network. The proposed call admission algorithm is based on prioritized handoff call in resource allocation. The resources for future handoff calls are therefore predicted and reserved in advance, and then new calls are admitted as long as the remaining resources are sufficient. We compare their performances in terms of prediction error, new call blocking and handoff dropping probabilities by simulation. Results show that the CAC based on Wiener prediction model performs favorably due to exact resources prediction.

  • Our prediction model is based on the development of "Semantic Location Model." It embodies geometrical and topological information which can increase the efficiency in prediction and make it easy to manipulate the prediction model. Data mining is being implemented to extract the inhabitant's location patterns generated day by day. As a result, the self-learning system will be able to semantically predict the inhabitant's location in advance. This context-aware system brings about the key component of the ubiquitous computing environment. First, we explain the semantic location model and data mining methods. Then the location prediction model for the ubiquitous computing system is described in details. Finally, the prototype system is introduced to demonstrate and evaluate our prediction model.

  • In this paper, we propose a new idea to evaluate the prediction accuracy of user's preference generated by memory-based collaborative filtering algorithm before prediction process in the recommender system. Our analysis results show the possibility of a pre-evaluation before the prediction process of users' preference of item's transaction on the web. Classification functions proposed in this study generate a user's rating pattern under certain conditions. In this research, we test whether classification functions select users who have lower prediction or higher prediction performance under collaborative filtering recommendation approach. The statistical test results will be based on the differences of the prediction accuracy of each user group which are classified by classification functions using the generative probability of specific rating. The characteristics of rating patterns of classified users will also be presented.

  • The availability of detailed data on customers' online behaviors and advances in big data analysis techniques enable us to predict consumer behaviors. In the past, researchers have built purchase prediction models by analyzing clickstream data; however, these clickstream-based prediction models have had several limitations. In this study, we propose a new method for purchase prediction that combines information theory with machine learning techniques. Clickstreams from 5,000 panel members and data on their purchases of electronics, fashion, and cosmetics products were analyzed. Clickstreams were summarized using the 'entropy' concept from information theory, while 'random forests' method was applied to build prediction models. The results show that prediction accuracy of this new method ranges from 0.56 to 0.83, which is a significant improvement over values for clickstream-based prediction models presented in the past. The results indicate further that consumers' information search behaviors differ significantly across product categories.

  • We propose a bandwidth prediction approach based on deep learning. The approach is intended to accurately predict the bandwidth of various types of mobile networks. We first use a machine learning technique, namely, the gradient boosting algorithm, to recognize the connected mobile network. Second, we apply a handover detection algorithm based on network recognition to account for vertical handover that causes the bandwidth variance. Third, as the communication performance offered by 3G, 4G, and 5G networks varies, we suggest a bidirectional long short-term memory model with time distribution for bandwidth prediction per network. To increase the prediction accuracy, pretraining and fine-tuning are applied for each type of network. We use a dataset collected at University College Cork for network recognition, handover detection, and bandwidth prediction. The performance evaluation indicates that the handover detection algorithm achieves 88.5% accuracy, and the bandwidth prediction model achieves a high accuracy, with a root-mean-square error of only 2.12%.

  • Serial ultrasonographic examinations were performed on pregnant Korean Jindo bitches. Measurements of inner chorionic cavity diameter and fetal head diameter were made from pregnancy day 15 to parturition. These measurements were converted retrospectively based on the day of parturition (day 0). The data of inner chorionic cavity diameter obtained from day -42 to day -25 and fetal head diameter obtained from day -24 to day -1 were used to prediction of parturition day. Formulas for the prediction of parturition day using the method of least squares were derived. These formulas were then used to predict parturition dates based on single measurements of inner chorionic cavity diameter or fetal head diameter in 17 additional pregnant Korean Jindo bitches. Predicted date of parturition was then compared to actual whelping date. In the prediction of parturition based on inner chorionic cavity diameter, 7 of 10 bitches were coincided prediction date and actual whelping date, and the prediction was accurate to within 1 day in 3 of 10 bitches. The prediction of parturition based on fetal head diameter was accurate to within 1 day in 6 of 7 bitches and within 2 days in 1 of 7 bitches. In conclusion, the ultrasound measurement of inner chorionic cavity diameter and fetal head diameter are practical and accurate tool in the prediction of parturition.

  • Recently, as networks become more complex due to the activation of IoT devices, research on long-term traffic prediction beyond short-term traffic prediction is being activated to predict and prepare for network congestion in advance. The recursive strategy, which reuses short-term traffic prediction results as an input, has been extended to multi-step traffic prediction, but as the steps progress, errors accumulate and cause deterioration in prediction performance. In this paper, an LSTM-based multi-step traffic prediction method using a multi-output strategy is introduced and its performance is evaluated. As a result of experiments based on actual DNS request traffic, it was confirmed that the proposed LSTM-based multiple output strategy technique can reduce MAPE of traffic prediction performance for non-stationary traffic by 6% than the recursive strategy technique.
