  • Purpose-built ink jet printheads are being recognized as useful tools in manufacturing where precision deposition is required. Ink jet technology is a non-contact, non-contaminating digital process compatible with clean rooms. New manufacturing applications are driving printhead designs to smaller drops, increased productivity. This paper describes Dimatix's new tools designed to facilitate development of manufacturing processes for both rigid and flexible substrates and development of new electronic fluids.

  • In this study, a design approach based on genetic algorithm is proposed to solve the manufacturing cell design problem considering alternative process plans and alternative machines. The problem is formulated as a 0-1 integer programming model which considers several manufacturing parameters, such as demand and processing time of part, machine capacity, manufacturing cell size, and the number of machines in a machine cell. A genetic algorithm is used to determine process plan for each part, part family and machine cell simultaneously.

  • Progress in the LCD industries has been very rapid. Therefore, their manufacturing lines require larger LCD glass-handling robots and more precise path control of the robots. In this paper, we present two practical advanced algorithms for high-precision path generation of an LCD glass-handling robot. One is high-precision path interpolation for continuous motion, which connects several single motions and is a reliable solution for a short robot cycle time. We demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can reduce path error by approximately 91% compared with existing algorithms without increasing cycle time. The second is real-time static deflection compensation, which can optimally compensate the static deflection of the handling robot without any additional sensors, measurement instruments or mechanical axes. This reduces vertical path error to approximately 60% of the existing system error. All of these algorithms have been commercialized and applied to a seventh-generation LCD glass-handling robot.

  • A high precision air bearing stage has been developed and calibrated. This linear-motor driven stage was designed to transport a glass or wafer with the X and Y following errors in nanometer regime. To achieve this level of precision, bar type mirrors were adopted for real time ${\Delta}X$ and ${\Delta}Y$ laser measurement and feedback control. With the laser wavelength variation and instability being kept minimized through strict environment control, the orthogonality of this type of control system becomes purely dependent upon the surface flatness, distortion, and assembly of the bar mirrors. Compensations for the bar mirror distortions and assembly have been performed using the self-calibration method. As a result, the orthogonality error of the stage was successfully decreased from $0.04^{\circ}$ to 2.48 arcsec.
