3-DOF automatic printed board positioning system using impact drive mechanism

  • There is a tendency nowadays to produce increasingly miniaturized electronic equipment which incorporate parts that have to be precisely positioned, like lenses, heads and CCD's in scanners, printers, copiers, VCR's, optical fiber modules, etc. In contrast to the production process of precision parts, which is currently being carried out automatically, the assemblage process is still being performed by specially skilled technicians. The assemblage process comprises normally the following steps: firstly, the parts are roughly positioned and partially fixed, secondly, the parts are manually nudged towards the target position and finally glued, screwed or welded. This paper presents a system that uses six piezo Impact Drive Mechanisms for accurate micro positioning within three degrees of freedom (lateral and longitudinal translation and rotation). The system is designed to positioning a printed circuit board with an accuracy better than 3 .mu.m (for translations), 5 mrad (for rotation).

Development of Precise Point Positioning Method Using Global Positioning System Measurements

  • Precise point positioning (PPP) is increasingly used in several parts such as monitoring of crustal movement and maintaining an international terrestrial reference frame using global positioning system (GPS) measurements. An accuracy of PPP data processing has been increased due to the use of the more precise satellite orbit/clock products. In this study we developed PPP algorithm that utilizes data collected by a GPS receiver. The measurement error modelling including the tropospheric error and the tidal model in data processing was considered to improve the positioning accuracy. The extended Kalman filter has been also employed to estimate the state parameters such as positioning information and float ambiguities. For the verification, we compared our results to other of International GNSS Service analysis center. As a result, the mean errors of the estimated position on the East-West, North-South and Up-Down direction for the five days were 0.9 cm, 0.32 cm, and 1.14 cm in 95% confidence level.

  • Rapid Prototyping(RP) models are no longer used only for design verification. Currently, parts built utilizing layer manufacturing technology can be employed as functional prototypes and as patterns or tools for different manufacturing processes such as vacuum casting, investment casting, injection molding, precise casting and sand casting. This trend of Rapid Prototyping application meets the requirement of concurrent engineering and its range covers a more spreaded area. The aim of this paper is saving the manufacturing lead time and cost of plastic parts having hollow space shapes used by prototype-car. Using rapid prototype patterns, made by the Selective Laser Sintering(SLS) technique, a new approach of manufacturing resin-based blow mold is discussed. It has a great potential fur making prototype-car parts with the batch size of under 200 parts, in case of rapid modification due to a subsequent design changes in developing stage. So, the process proposed in this research shows reduction of process time and manufacturing cost when compared with the conventional process such as a Zinc Alloy fur Stamping(ZAS) mold.

양액 자동조제용 액제 정밀계량 장치 개발 (Development of a Low -Cost and Precise Liquid Metering Device for Automatic Nutrient-Solution Control)

  • A low-cost and precise metering device, which is suitable to automatic mixing of nutrient-solution for hydroponic culture, was developed for small-scale growers. The metering device was composed of three parts those were supply pumps, metering cylinders and venturi tube. Those parts were controlled by personal computer with time-based odoff control method. To verify the performance of the developed metering device, the relationship between operating time and discharge was examined and the accuracy of the developed metering device was compared with commercial metering pumps. The results of this study are as follows. 1. The correlation coefficient between the flow rate and operating time was 0.9999, and the linear regression equation computed was y=21.759x, where y is the discharge(g) and x is the operating time(s). 2. The developed device has greater accuracy than commercial metering pumps in terms of the full-scale error. Calculated errors for the developed metering device and two commercial pump were $\pm$0.3 %, $\pm$2.45 % and $\pm$1.38 % respectively. 3. Above results show developed metering device is a useful tool for nutrient-solution control system.

레이저를 이용한 박판 버의 정밀측정 (Precision measuring of burrs on sheet metal using the laser)

  • The sheet metal shearing process is normally used in the precision elements such as semi-conductor components. In precision elements, burrs usually reduce the quality of machined parts and cause interference, jamming and misalignment during assembly procedures and because of their sharpness, they can be safety hazard to personnel. Furthermore, not only burrs are hard to predict and avoid, but also deburring, the process of removing burrs, is time-consuming and costly. In order to get the burr-free parts, therefore, we developed the precise burr measuring system using the laser. The laser burr measuring system consists of the laser probe, the photo detector, the achromatic doublet lens, and the rotary & the X-Y table. In previous reports, we used simple vertical measuring method. But, as we used relatively bigger laser spot diameter and had the limited reflection angle, it was difficult to obtain the precise measuring results. So called, the spot size effect makes the profile of burr measured distorted and the burr height measured smaller. By introducing the novel laser measuring method which employing the achromatic lens system and the tilting mechanism, we could make the spot size smaller and get the appropriate beam direction angle. Through the experiments, the accuracy of the developed system is proved. The burr height measured during the punching process can be used for automatic deburring and in-situ aligning.

  • In this paper, we describe a new approch to control method of a four joints-robot gripper for the purpose of parts assemblying. The robot gripper is specifically modeled by using a 3D CAD program (ANSYS), considering artificial grippers, and then the proposed control method is illustrated through the dynamic simulation tool (Adams). Each gripper finger is individually controlled to be located at the optimal positions where the maximal joint torque can be calculated. To verified the effectiveness of the proposed control method, we proposed two cases for the reference position of gripper. By comparing the control performance of two method, the performance of the proposed control method was verified.

A Study on Vehicle-based Durability Evaluation for Weight-reduced Valve Parts of the Dual Clutch Transmission

  • A monotype valve body for a dual clutch transmission has the potential to reduce costs, weight, and manufacturing time by modularizing various parts, including those of existing solenoid packs and valve bodies, into one through the application of super-precision die casting technology. However, this approach may lead to challenges such as reduced rigidity and increased interference due to modularization and compactness, impacting both product performance due to the reduced weight as well as durability and reliability. Unlike existing products, this approach requires a high-precision thin-wall block to avoid more complicated flow line formation, interference between flow lines, and leaks, as well as a strict quality requirement standard and precise inspections including detection of internal defects. To conduct precise inspections, we built an equivalent model corresponding to a driving distance of 300,000 km. Testing involved simulating actual road loads using a real vehicle and a chassis dynamometer in the FTP-75 mode (EPA Federal Test Procedure). The aim of the study was to establish a vehicle load-based part durability model for manufacturing a mono-type valve body and to develop fundamental technology for part weight reduction through preliminary design by introducing analytical weight reduction technology based on the derived results.

초정밀가공의 파상도 보정시스템에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Waviness Compensation System of Ultraprecision Machining)

  • Recently, precision machining technology has been developed continuously in order to make high productivity and quality assurance of the precision parts of several industrial fields. Waviness may occur on the surface of the machined parts due to the table motion error and the dynamic cutting mechanism between the tool and the workpiece. The waviness may fall off the form accuracy of the precision machine parts. In the research, a micro cutting device with piezoelectric actuator has been developed to control precise depth of cut and compensate the waviness on the surface of the workpiece. Experiments have been carried out in the precision lathe. The characteristics of the surface profile and cause of the waviness profile have been analyzed and waviness profiles of some cause have been compared with those of experiments.

  • Micro injection molding is a branch of micro system technology and has been under development for the mass manufacture of micro parts. Enhanced technological products like micro optical devices are entering the market. This paper presents fundamental research on the injection molding technique in micro fabrication. In order to successful manufacturing of micro plastic parts, it is necessary to research for development of micro-injection machine, machining of micro mold, decision of optimum injection conditions and the research for polymer material. Therefore in this study, in order to machining of micro mold, a mold core with microscopic V-shaped groove was tooled by ultra-precise tooling machine. The transcription experiments with a polymer, PMMA resin on the surface of core with Ni plating were carried out and surface profile of injected parts was measured with AFM.

MIMS: 웹기반 마이크로 머시닝 서비스 (MIMS: Web-based Micro Machining Service)

  • Presented in this Paper is a Micro Machining Service .(MIMS) based on the World Wide Web technologies. In order to ensure easy access to the service, the web browsers are used as the user interface. The pan geometry as an STL file is uploaded with process parameter for 3-axis CNC milling. Depending on the predefined user level, novice or expert, the user interface requires different parameters for process planning. An STL-based CAM resides in the server and automatically provides NC codes upon user's request. Tool-paths for scanning and pencil-cut, which are interference-free and precise, are created by the curve-based polyhedral machining method. A couple of sample parts were fabricated by a micro endmill with 127 fm diameter. From the tests, the parts fabricated by scanning followed by pencil-cut resulted in less error(within 2%) than the parts machined only by scanning tool-path.
