A Study on the Performances of Exhaust Gas Purification at Process on the Development of Corona Discharge Type Electrostatic Precipitator for Diesel Engines (디젤엔진용 코로나 방전식 전기집진장치의 개발 과정에서의 배기 정화 성능에 관한 기초연구)

  • In this study an experimental research has been conducted to reduce NOx and smoke emission from diesel engine exhaust gas simultaneously by application of corona discharge type electrostatic precipitator(ESP). The ESP was installed between exhaust gas silencer and outlet terminal of exhaust gas system. The operating conditions as input parameters taken in this experiment were corona power input, gas velocity and equivalence ratio of gas. It was found that the corona discharge type ESP has notable effect on reducing smoke in exhaust gas but appeared to bring slight effect on reducing NOx.

  • A numerical simulation for particle collection efficiency in a wire-plate electrostatic precipitator (ESP) has been performed. Method of characteristics and finite differencing method (MOC-FDM) were employed to obtain electric field and space charge density, and lattice boltzmann method (LBM) was used to predict the Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flow according to the ion convection. Large eddy simulation (LES) was considered for turbulent flow and particle simulation was performed by discrete element method (DEM) which considered field charging, electric force, drag force and wall-collision. One way coupling from FDM to LBM was used with small and low density particle assumption. When the charged particle collided with the collecting plate, particle-wall collision was calculated for re-entertainment effect and the effect of gravity force was considered.

  • An aftertreatment system of diesel exhaust gas was attempted to extract particulate matters. The system consisted of a corona-less electrostatic precipitator to agglomerate soot particles and a counter-flow cyclone to collect them. When the effect of high voltage was examined at different configuration of electrode plates, the case of positive 15kV at both plates showed the maximum reduction of 38% in diesel smoke level. However, the back pressure became quite high as engine speed increased, so that minimizing pressure drop in cyclone should be studied with improving collection efficiency of soot particles.

  • Electrostatic Precipitator has been widely used to get high efficiency which is required for collection of fine particles. In order to provide collection efficiency and size distribution data for a pilot electrostatic precipitator, a pilot study has been conducted on fly ash from pulverized coal burning apparatus. The aims of this study are to investigate characteristics of electric charge, to measure collection efficiency varied with the applied voltage, to get an optimum current and current density. Optimum current density was obtained to 0.7mA/$cm^2$ at the average electric field strength 2.33kV/cm in this experiment. Maximum particle collection efficiency was indicated 99.21% at the applied voltage 7kV. Finally, particle size distribution is also compared with photographic results. Both coarse and fine particles at the range of 0.5$\sim$2$\mu$m and 3$\sim$10 SEM $\mu$m were clearly removed by increasing applied voltage.

  • In this paper, double exposure holographic interferometry using ruby pulse laser is formed in order to investigate the propagation of transient waves. The vibration characteristics according to the change of impact load direction, i.e., impacted in the shear direction and in the normal direction are analyzed. It was observed that the macroscopic trends of transient wave generation and propagation in the assembly of precipitator plates were almost similar regardless of the change of impact load direction. But the propagation and mixing of transient wave was advanced relatively slowly when impacted in the normal direction.

  • This study Investigates the effect of the wave form of pulse energization on the collection characteristics of a wide plate spacing electrostatic precipitator. For the semi-pulse energization, the peak current and voltage of the energization increases with increase of the pulse period, and the corona current increases, as pulse ratio decreases. For the micro-pulse energization, the corona current increases with increase of the pulse voltage. The collection efficiency of semi-pulse and micro-pulse energization is larger than that of DC charge.

  • Agglomerated and non-agglomerated SiO$_2$ particles are synthesized in a furnace by oxidation of TEOS vapor. These polydispersed particles are classified with DMA to extract particles. Then these particles are introduced into a thermal precipitator through the ESP(Electrostatic Precipitator) to investigate the themophoretic particle deposition using CNCs(Condensation Nuclei Counter). The efficiency of themophoretic particle deposition according to agglomerated and non-agglomerated particles in the thermal precipitator has been studied as a function of particle size and TEOS mole concentration using monodisperse particles classified by DMA. The results show that the particle deposition efficiency decreases as TEOS mole concentration increases and particle size increases. Thereffre, it is concluded that the thermophoretic deposition efficiency is dependent of the particle morphology.

  • This study investigate the effect of collection plate velocity on the electrical and collection characteristics of a moving electrode electrostatic precipitator (MEEP). Though a high resistivity fly ash is attached at the collecting electrode, the MEEP has very stable characteristics of voltage and corona current. Collection efficiency, corona current, and overall collection efficiency are increased, as the magnitude of the collection plate velocity increases.

  • Electrical resistivity is an important property for the collection efficiency in the electrostatic precipitator. In this paper, electrical resistivities of tobacco dusts, yellow sand dusts and pine pollens are measured using a high voltage conductivity cell based on JIS B 9915. The resistivities of three kinds of indoor dusts are about $1{\times}10^7\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ in the normal range and dust collection efficiency using an electrostatic precipitator at to face velocity of 1.0 m/s shows over 99% for the three kinds of indoor dusts.

  • This experimental study aims to investigate the use of a wet electrostatic precipitator as a post-treatment device to satisfy the strict emission regulations for sulfur oxides and particulate matter (PM). The inlet/outlet of a wet electrostatic precipitator was installed in a funnel using a marine four-stroke diesel engine (STX-MAN B&W) consuming marine heavy fuel oil (HFO) with a sulfur content of about 2.1%. Measurements were then obtained at the outlet of the wet electrostatic precipitator; an optical measuring instrument (OPA-102), and the weight concentration measurement method (Method 5 Isokinetic Train) were used for the PM measurements and the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR; DX-4000) approach was used for the sulfur oxide measurements. The experimenst were conducted by varying the engine load from 50%, to 75% and 100%; it was noted that the PM reduction efficiency was a high at about 94 to 98% under all load conditions. Additionally, during the process of lowering the exhaust gas temperature in the quenching zone of the wet electrostatic precipitator, the sulfur dioxide (SO2) values reduced because of the cleaning water, and the reduction rate was confirmed to be 55% to 81% depending on the engine load.
