Super-refraction of radar beams tends to occur primarily under a particular vertical structure of temperature and water vapor pressure profiles. A quality control process for the removal of anomalous propagation (AP) ehcoes are required because APs are easily misidentified as precipitation echoes. For this purpose, we collected X-band polarimetric radar parameters (differential reflectivity, cross-correlation coefficient, and differential phase) only including non-precipitation echoes (super-refraction and clear-sky ground echoes) and precipitation echoes, and compared the echo types regarding the relationships among radar reflectivities, polarimetric parameters, and the membership functions. We developed a removal algorithm for the non-precipitation echoes using the texture approach for the polarimetric parameters. The presented algorithm is qualitatively validated using the S-band Jindo radar in Jeollanam-do. Our algorithm shows the successful identification and removal of AP echoes.

This study analyzed the differences of mean basin precipitation between TM and radar based on the 51 standard basins in Han river and Nakdong river when large scale of heavy rains occurred in 2018. The result shows that the differences between radar and TM are -65.05 ~ 26.09% and -82.00 ~ 3.80% for accumulated and 10 min. maximum mean basin precipitation, respectively. The correlation analysis between the differences of estimated mean basin precipitation and basin characteristics such as average altitude of basin, area of basin, and shape factor of basin presents that there is no clear correlation between them. And the differences of point precipitation also shows the similar tendency with those of mean basin precipitation. In order to find out the correlation between them and meteorological conditions such as rainfall patterns, the reflectivity of radars according to the observation angles is analyzed at the selected basins, and then it is found that the differences of mean basin precipitation between TM and radar is more dominated by the meteorological conditions than by the topographic conditions such as basin characteristics.
Weather modification research has been actively performed worldwide, but a technology that can more quantitatively prove the research effects are needed. In this study, the seeding effect, the efficiency of precipitation enhancement in weather modification experiment, was verified using the radar data. Also, the effects of seeding material on hydrometeor change was analyzed. For this, radar data, weather conditions, and numerical simulation data for diffusion were applied. First, a method to analyze the seeding effect in three steps was proposed: before seeding, during seeding, and after seeding. The proposed method was applied to three cases of weather modification experiments conducted in Gangwon-do and the West Sea regions. As a result, when there is no natural precipitation, the radar reflectivity detected in the area where precipitation change is expected was determined as the seeding effect. When natural precipitation occurs, the seeding effect was determined by excluding the effect of natural precipitation from the maximum reflectivity detected. For the application results, it was found that the precipitation intensity increased by 0.1 mm/h through the seeding effect. In addition, it was confirmed that ice crystals, supercooled water droplets, and mixed-phase precipitation were distributed in the seeding cloud. The results of these weather modification research can be used to secure water resources as well as for future study of cloud physics.

In this paper, pattern classifier is designed to classify precipitation and non-precipitation events from weather radar data. The proposed classifier is based on Fuzzy Neural Network(FNN) and consists of three FNNs which operate in parallel. In the proposed network, the connection weights of the consequent part of fuzzy rules are expressed as two polynomial types such as constant or linear polynomial function, and their coefficients are learned by using Least Square Estimation(LSE). In addition, parametric as well as structural factors of the proposed classifier are optimized through Differential Evolution(DE) algorithm. After event classification between precipitation and non-precipitation echo, non-precipitation event is to get rid of all echo, while precipitation event including non-precipitation echo is to get rid of non-precipitation echo by classifier that is also based on Fuzzy Neural Network. Weather radar data obtained from meteorological office is to analysis and discuss performance of the proposed event and echo patter classifier, result of echo pattern classifier compare to QC(Quality Control) data obtained from meteorological office.

Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) is one of the most important elements in meteorological and hydrological applications. In this study, we adjusted the QPE from an S-band weather radar based on co-kriging method using the geostatistical structure function of error distribution of radar rainrate. In order to estimate the accurate quantitative precipitation, the error of radar rainrate which is a primary variable of co-kriging was determined by the difference of rain rates from rain gauge and radar. Also, the gauge rainfield, a secondary variable of co-kriging is derived from the ordinary kriging based on raingauge network. The error distribution of radar rain rate was produced by co-kriging with the derived theoretical variogram determined by experimental variogram. The error of radar rain rate was then applied to the radar estimated precipitation field. Locally heavy rainfall case during 6-7 July 2009 is chosen to verify this study. Correlation between adjusted one-hour radar rainfall accumulation and rain gauge rainfall accumulation improved from 0.55 to 0.84 when compared to prior adjustment of radar error with the adjustment of root mean square error from 7.45 to 3.93 mm.
The effect of 3DVAR (Three Dimension Variational data Assimilation) was examined by comparing observation and the simulations of CNTL (to which data assimilation was not applied) and ALL (to which data assimilation was applied using ground observation data and radar data) for the case of a heavy snowfall event (case A) of 11-12 February 2011 in the Yeongdong region. In case A, heavy snow intensively came in the Yeongdong coastal region rather than Daegwallyeong, in particular, around the Gangneung and Donghae regions with total precipitation in Bukgangneung at approximately 91 mm according to the AWS observation. It can be seen that compared to CNTL, ALL simulated larger precipitation along the Yeongdong coastline extending from Sokcho to Donghae while simulating smaller precipitation for inland areas including Daegwallyeong. On comparison of the total accumulated precipitations from simulations of CNTL and ALL, and the observed total accumulated precipitation, the positive effect of the assimilation of ground observation data and radar data could be identified in Bukgangneung and Donghae, on the other hand, the negative effect of the assimilation could be identified in the Daegwallyeong and Sokcho regions. In order to examine the average accuracy of precipitation prediction by CNTL and ALL for the entire Gangwon region including the major points mentioned earlier, the three hour accumulated precipitation from simulations of CNTL and ALL were divided into 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 mm/3hr and threat Scores were calculated by forecasting time. ALL showed relatively higher TSs than CNTL for all threshold values although there were some differences. That is, when considered generally based on the Gangwon region, the accuracy of precipitation prediction from ALL was improved somewhat compared to that from CNTL.
To elucidate the mechanism associated with the development of heavy precipitation system, a field experiment was carried out in Jejudo (or Jeju Island) and Marado, Korea from 22 June to 12 July 2006. The synoptic atmospheric conditions were analyzed using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction-National Center for Atmospheric Research's (NCEP/NCAR) reanalyzed data, weather maps, and sounding data. The kinematic characteristics of each precipitation system were investigated by dual Doppler radar analysis. During the field experiment, data of four precipitation events with more than 20 mm rainfall were collected. In F case (frontal precipitation), a typical Changma front was dominant and the observation field was fully saturated. However there was no convective instability near the surface. LF case (low pressure accompanied with Changma front) showed strong convective instability near the surface, while a strong convergence corresponded to the low pressure from China accompanied with Changma front. In FT case (Changma front indirectly influenced by typhoon), the presence of a convective instability indicated the transport of near surface, strong additional moisture from the typhoon 'EWINIAR'. The convergence wind field was ground to be located at a low level. The convective instability was not significant in T case (precipitation of the typhoon 'EWINIAR'), since the typhoon passed through Jejudo and the Changma front was disappeared toward the northeastern region of the Korean peninsula. The kinematic (convergence and divergence) characteristics of wind fields, convective instability, and additional moisture inflow played important roles in the formation and development of heavy precipitation.
For urban flash flood simulation, we need the higher resolution radar rainfall than radar rainfall of KMA, which has 10 min time and 1km spatial resolution, because the area of subbasins is almost below $1km^2$. Moreover, we have to secure the high quantitative accuracy for considering the urban hydrological model that is sensitive to rainfall input. In this study, we developed the quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE), which has 250 m spatial resolution and high accuracy using KMA AWS and SK Planet stations with Mt. Gwangdeok radar data in Seoul area. As the results, the rainfall field using KMA AWS (QPE1) is showed high smoothing effect and the rainfall field using Mt. Gwangdeok radar is lower estimated than other rainfall fields. The rainfall field using KMA AWS and SK Planet (QPE2) and conditional merged rainfall field (QPE4) has high quantitative accuracy. In addition, they have small smoothed area and well displayed the spatial variation of rainfall distribution. In particular, the quantitative accuracy of QPE4 is slightly less than QPE2, but it has been simulated well the non-homogeneity of the spatial distribution of rainfall.

The main objective of this paper is to present the rain cell size distribution observed during squall line episodes in the Sudano-Sahelian region. The used data were collected during the EPSAT Program [Etude des Precipitation par SATellite (Satellites Study of Precipitation)] which has been developed since 1958, on an experimental area located near Niamey, Niger (2 10′32"E, 13 28′38"N). The data were obtained with a C-band radar and a network composed of approximately 100 raingages over a 10,000 $\textrm{km}^2$. In this work a culling of the squall line episodes was made for the 1992 rainy season. After radar data calibration using the raingage network a number of PPI (Plan Position Indicator) images were generated. Each image was then treated in order to obtain a series of radar reflectivity (Z) maps. To describe the cell distribution, a contouring program was used to analyze the areas with rain rate greater than or equal to the contour threshold (R$\geq$$\tau$). 24700 contours were generated, where each iso-pleth belongs to a predefined threshold. Computing each cell surface and relating its area to an equi-circle (a circle having the same area as the cell), a statistical analysis was made. The results show that the number of rain cells having a given size is an inverse exponential function of the equivalent radius. The average and median equivalent radii ate 1.4 and 0.69 In respectively. Implications of these results for the precipitation estimation using threshold methods are discussed.

Generally, precipitation measurement were conducted with various authrities. Among these, the MOLIT conduct the hydrological survey for the water resource management such as flood and low-flow forecasting, drought countermeasure, streamflow management. There is totally 424 observatory were existed and each precipitation measurement were obtained and quality assuranced with 10-min interval. It could be arranged or estimated with nearby observatory and radar reflectivity when the total amount of precipitation are existed. The objective of the study is therefore to suggest the method to estimate missing data with rain radar reflectivity. To validate suggested method, 50 observartory were obtained, and the efficiency were analyzed with estimated and observed precipitation. As the result of the study, the suggested method has reliability, and can be used as a method for quality assurance.
