176k Bulk Carrier에 대한 신개념 타입의 Pre-Swirl Duct의 개발 및 CFD 해석 (Development and CFD Analysis of a New Type Pre-Swirl Duct for 176k Bulk Carrier)

  • This paper shows numerical results for the estimation of the propulsor efficiency of Pre-Swirl Duct for 176k bulk carrier as well as its design method. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved and the k-epsilon model applied for the turbulent closure. The propeller rotating motion is determined using a sliding mesh technique. The design process is divided into each part of Pre-Swirl Duct, duct and Pre-Swirl Stator. The design of duct was performed first because it is located further upstream than Pre-Swirl Stator. The distribution of velocity through the duct was analyzed and applied for the design of Pre-Swirl Stator. The design variables of duct include duct angle, diameter, and chord length. Diameter, chord length, equivalent angle are considered when designing the Pre-Swirl Stator. Furthermore, a variable pitch angle stator is applied for the final model of Pre-Swirl Duct. The largest reduction rate of the delivered power in model scale is 7.6%. Streamlines, axial and tangential velocities under the condition that the Pre-Swirl Duct is installed were reviewed to verify its performance.

  • The study on the design of pre-swirl stator vanes is performed. The pre-swirl stator vanes is an energy-saving device to improve propulsive performance by providing pre-swirl to the propeller inflow. The theoretical background and the design conditions for pre-swirl stator vanes are presented. The flow characteristics around the pre-swirl stator vanes attached ship hull are analyzed through the experimental method. The technique to determine the optimum location, angle and the number of stator vane is investigated and applied it to 310,000 TBW VLCC The flow velocities are measured using 5-hole Pilot tubes at the condition with and without a propeller.

스월 브레이크가 장착된 래버린스 씰의 동특성 해석 (Rotordynamic Analysis of Labyrinth Seal with Swirl Brake)

  • In this research, the rotordynamic characteristics of the labyrinth seal with and without swirl brake were predicted using the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model. Based on previous studies, a simple swirl brake consisting of square vanes without stagger angle is designed and placed in front of the seal inlet. The rotating frame of reference is utilized to consider the whirling motion of the rotor in the steady-state analysis since the whirling motion is transient behavior in nature. CFD analysis was performed in the range of -1 to 1 pre-swirl ratio for a given seal and swirl brake design and operating conditions. The CFD analysis result shows that the swirl brake effectively reduces the pre-swirl since the circumferential fluid velocity of labyrinth seal with swirl brake was lower than that without swirl brake. The cross-coupled stiffness coefficient, which is greatly affected by the circumferential fluid velocity, increased with an increasing pre-swirl ratio in a seal without a swirl brake but showed a low value in a seal with a swirl brake. The change in the damping coefficient was relatively small. The effective damping coefficient of the labyrinth seal with swirl brake was generally constant and showed a higher value than the labyrinth seal without swirl brake.

CFD를 사용한 비접촉식 가스 실의 입구 선회류 영향 해석 (Analysis of Pre-Swirl Effect for Plain-Gas Seal Using CFD)

  • In present 3D CFD study, the method for determining leakage and rotordynamic coefficients of a plain-gas seal is suggested by using the relative coordinate system for steady-state simulation. In order to find the effect of pre-swirl speed at seal inlet, pre-swirl velocity is included as a parameter. Present analysis is verified by comparison with results acquired from Bulk-flow analysis code and published experimental results. The results of 3D CFD rotordynamic coefficients of direct stiffness(K) and cross-coupled stiffness(k) show improvements in prediction. As pre-swirl speed at seal inlet increases, k also increases to destabilize system. However, pre-swirl speed at seal inlet does not show sensitivity to the leakage and rotordynamic coefficients of K and damping(C).

Pre-swirl system의 유량계수 향상을 위한 Pre-swirl nozzle의 형상 최적화 전산해석 연구 (Pre-swirl Nozzle Geometry Optimization to Increase Discharge Coefficient Using CFD Analysis)

  • Optimization process of pre-swirl nozzle geometry was conducted to improve the discharge coefficient of pre-swirl system by using CFD. The optimization of pre-swirl nozzle shape covered the converging angle and the location of the converging nozzle. Optimization process included Optimal Latin Hyper-cube Design method to get the experimental points and the Kriging method to create the response surface which gives candidate points. The process was finished when the difference between the predicted value and CFD value of candidate point was less than 0.1 %. This paper compared the Reference model, Initial model which is the first model of optimization and Optimized model to study flow characteristics. Finally, the discharge coefficient of Optimized model is improved about 17 % to the Reference model.

  • The effects of carbon dioxide addition to oxygen have been investigated with swirl-stabilized premixed methane flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor. The methane fuel and oxydant mixture gas ($CO_2$ and $O_2$) were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through different degrees of swirl vanes. The flame characteristics were examined for different amount of carbon dioxide addition to the methane fuel and different swirl strengths. The effects of carbon dioxide addition and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using chemiluminescence techniques to provide information about flow field. The results show that the flame area increases at upstream of reaction zone because of increase in recirculation flow for increase in swirl intensity. The flame area is also increased at the downstream zone by recirculation flow because of increase in swirl intensity which results in higher centrifugal force. The OH and CH radical intensity of reaction zone decrease with carbon dioxide addition because the carbon dioxide plays a role of dilution gas in the reaction zone.

  • 프리스월 노즐과 리시버 홀의 상대적 위치가 반경방향 분사방식 프리스월 시스템의 성능에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 본 연구에서는 5개의 프리스월 노즐 위치와 4개의 리시버 홀 위치 조합을 통해 20개의 설계점에 대한 분석을 진행하여 유량계수와 온도 강하 효율 변화 경향성을 연구하였다. 시스템 유량계수는 프리스월 노즐의 압력비와 비슷한 경향을 보였다. 캐비티 내부의 유동이 벽면의 영향을 크게 받을수록 시스템 성능 변화가 발생하였으며 회전면보다 정지면의 영향력이 더 큰 것을 확인하였다. 형상변수 변화에 따라 기준 설계점 대비 유량계수는 -1.39%~1.25%, 온도강하효율은 -5.41%~2.94% 변화하였다.

  • International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulates an emission of greenhouse gases by creating an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) to reduce environmental pollution. In propulsion system field, studies are under way on Energy Saving Device (ESD), which can improve propulsion efficiency with the propeller, to reduce the EEDI. Among the studies, the study of Pre-Swirl Stator (PSS) has been actively conducted from long time ago. Recently the variable pith angle type pre-swirl stator has been studied to improve the propulsion efficiency in non-uniform flow fields of the Stern. However, for traditional design methods, no specific design method has been established on the blade or location of radius. In this study, proper design method is proposed for each blade or location for radius according to hydrodynamic pitch angle.

The flame characteristics were examined for various amount of carbon dioxide addition to the methane fuel and various swirl strengths. The effects of carbon dioxide addition and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using chemiluminescence techniques to provide information about flow field. The results show that the hot combustion zone increases at the upstream reaction zone because of an increase in the recirculation flow for an increase in swirl intensity. The hot combustion zone is also increased at the downstream zone by recirculation flow because of an increase in swirl intensity which results in higher centrifugal force. The OH and CH radical intensities of reaction zone decrease with carbon dioxide addition because the carbon dioxide plays a role of diluted gas in the reaction zone.

수소 첨가가 예혼합 메탄 화염의 NOx 생성에 미치는 영향 (Hydrogen Enrichment Effects on NOx Formation in Pre-mixed Methane Flame)

  • The effects of hydrogen enrichment to methane on NOx formation have been investigated with swirl stabilized pre-mixed hydrogen enriched methane flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor(nominally of 5,000 kcal/hr). The hydrogen enriched methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through different degrees of swirl vanes. The flame stability was examined for different amount of hydrogen addition to the methane fuel, different combustion air flow rates and swirl strengths by comparing equivalence ratio at the lean flame limit. The hydrogen addition effects and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using gas analyzers, and OH chemiluminescence techniques to provide information about species concentration of emission gases and flowfield. The results of NOx and CO emissions were compared with a diffusion flame type combustor. The results show that the lean stability limit depends on the amount of hydrogen addition and the swirl intensity. The lean stability limit is extended by hydrogen addition, and is reduced for higher swirl intensity at lower equivalence ratio. The addition of hydrogen increases the NOx emission, however, this effect can be reduced by increasing either the excess air or swirl intensity. The NOx emission of hydrogen enriched methane premixed flame was lower than the corresponding diffusion flame under the fuel lean condition.
