  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of reflective thinking on verbal interaction of the pre-service teachers in elementary science classes. Two pre-service teachers were selected for this study and they respectively had gave three science classes. Every science class was recorded by using video/audio but only audio data of first and last science classes were transcribed for verbal interaction analysis. The result of this study revealed that the frequency of teacher's verbal interaction in last science class was increased rather than the case of first science class. The increasing patterns of interaction frequency were affected by the teacher's viewpoint and preparation for the science class. Teacher's verbal interactions were divided into low-level and high-level for the analysis of qualitative change. Low-level interactions are which leading students' convergent thinking, high-level interactions are which leading students' divergent thinking. Also the result of this study revealed that high-level interactions in last science class were increased rather than in first class. On the other hand, low-level interactions in last class were reduced rather than in first class. Therefore, this results implied that the effects of reflective thinking on verbal interaction of pre-service teachers in elementary science classes were appeared, but the effects were also affected by teacher's individual characteristics. Especially the changing degrees of qualitative interactions varies with the teacher's viewpoint and preparation for the science class.

  • This study is to consider the fundamental perceptions of pre-service elementary school teachers to natural environments. The recognition items of questionnaire for those environments include ones of water, atmospheric, soil, biologic and oceanic environments constituting of the earth system. From the results of the study, they affirmatively recognized biologic environment, but they showed highly negative recognitions to others. In other side, it is considered that their recognitions to natural environments were probably transferred by the things which involve press media, curricula and real lives. On the basis of the study results, systematic teaching-learning for natural environments is essential because the encouragement of eco-friendly attitude, one of main goal for environmental education, is budded from basic understandings to natural environments. Affirmatively environmental worldviews for elementary school students are important for reasons why teacher's quality and practice will is fundamental, and then teacher could change the views of the students for environmental education. So, preparing balanced attitudes, right concepts and connection to applicable knowledges for natural environments, pre-service elementary school teachers in environmental education must be pointed to organized education between human and natural environment.

  • This study is to ascertain pre-service teachers' conceptions for the causes of season change, to verify their conceptional mistakes, and to analyze how their conceptions are changed while presenting Disproof-Experiment Model where they cannot explain it with their current conceptions. 32 junior students of Education universities, pre-service elementary teachers, located at the middle of Korea participated in this research including two interviews and one experiment activity. As a result of analyzing of the data, the pre-service teachers held diverse conceptions for the causes of season change such as to mistake the phenomena, the distance between the earth and the sun, the tilting of the rotation axis and the revolving around the sun while changing the tilting direction of the rotation axis as the cause. After applying Disproof-Experiment Model designed by the researchers in order to change the current conception above, the conception changes of the pre-service teachers were investigated. Diverse Disproof-Experiment Models were used differently depending on the pre-service teachers' conceptions. As a result of the application of Disproof-Experiment Model, 26 out of 28 pre-service teachers were changed to scientific conceptions. It was determined that in order to modify pre-service teachers' conceptions, designing and presenting the Disproof-Experiment Model appropriate to their conceptions are effective after analyzing their conceptions. In case of conceptions that pre-service teachers feel difficult, it was established that unraveling experiment models prescribed after investigating the preconceptions and identifying the misconceptions are important.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the stress experienced by pre-service chemistry teachers during their teaching practice. To do this, a stress test tool for pre-service science teachers was developed, and a survey was conducted with 19 pre-service chemistry teachers to investigate their anticipated stress before the practice and the stress experienced after the practice. The survey, conducted online before and after the teaching practice, was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The interpretation of the stress test results for pre-service chemistry teachers was based on teaching portfolios and interview data compiled during the teaching practice. The research findings are as follows: First, pre-service chemistry teachers anticipated various stresses before the teaching practice, but the number of stress factors and the number of pre-service teachers experiencing stress were generally lower during the practice. Second, there are a difference in the factors and percentage of anticipated and experienced stress before and during the teaching practice depending on the school level where pre-service chemistry teachers gained their practice. Third, there was no gender difference in the stress experienced by pre-service chemistry teachers during the teaching practice.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the mismatch between instructional design and teaching practice of pre-service science teachers and to investigate the cause of these mismatches. Twenty pre-service science teachers took part in teaching practicum for four weeks from Apr. 2015 to May 2015 and we analyzed their lesson plans and videos of these lessons. After that, we interviewed the pre-service science teachers in order to know the cause of these mismatches and additional informations. The main findings are as follows. First, in the introductory stage, we found more mismatch in the "attention and motivation stimulation" area than any other area. Many pre-service science teachers corrected their 'motivation practice' in different forms. Second, we found out that the most mismatch occurred in the evolving stage. Many pre-service science teachers added learning contents in "learning content presentation" area. Third, in the closing stage, many pre-service science teachers omitted the "leaning content summary" area in the lack of time. Fourth, the number of mismatches by internal factors is similar of by external factors. The mismatches by external factors were mainly by feedback of guidance teacher and change by students' response. In addition, we discussed the implications related to reflective mentoring program, importance of guidance teacher, importance of time management etc.

  • The purpose of this study were to analyze characteristics of pre-service chemistry teachers' practice teaching and to investigate the relationship between their practice teaching characteristics and the view of learning. Three pre-service chemistry teachers were selected for this study. Their 9 practice teaching videos that recorded during practice teaching were observed, transcribed, and analyzed. Responses of questionnaires about their view of learning and interviews were transcribed and analyzed. Almost all of the characteristics of pre-service teachers' practice teaching seemed to be reflected in their view of learning. Pre-service teacher K had a lot of constructive view of learning, so comparatively many features of constructivism was presented in practice teaching. Pre-service teacher M had a lot of traditional view of learning, so many traditional features appeared in practice teaching. However, sometimes pre-service teachers' view of learning did not appear to their practice teaching because of several factors. In particular, a few cases that constructive view of learning was not reflected in the practice teaching appeared, especially pre-service teacher H. Factors were the practice school's conditions and the effects of tutors.

  • The purpose of this study was to search pre-service teachers?and chemistry teachers?conceptions related to electrolysis process by predicting electrolysis products in NaI solution. A questionnaire developed by the researchers and following interviews were adopted for the research. By the methods, the conceptions of the groups were compared. Also, the relationship between their conceptions and explanations of chemistry II textbooks and general chemistry books was examined. From the analysis, it was found that most of the pre-service teachers had difficulties in using standard electrode potential when they predicted products of electrolysis. Most of the chemistry teachers could use standard electrode potential, but it was difficult to understand water electrolysis in redox reaction. The explanations of chemistry II textbooks also contained misconceptions.
