수소 첨가가 예혼합 메탄 화염의 NOx 생성에 미치는 영향 (Hydrogen Enrichment Effects on NOx Formation in Pre-mixed Methane Flame)

  • The effects of hydrogen enrichment to methane on NOx formation have been investigated with swirl stabilized pre-mixed hydrogen enriched methane flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor(nominally of 5,000 kcal/hr). The hydrogen enriched methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through different degrees of swirl vanes. The flame stability was examined for different amount of hydrogen addition to the methane fuel, different combustion air flow rates and swirl strengths by comparing equivalence ratio at the lean flame limit. The hydrogen addition effects and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using gas analyzers, and OH chemiluminescence techniques to provide information about species concentration of emission gases and flowfield. The results of NOx and CO emissions were compared with a diffusion flame type combustor. The results show that the lean stability limit depends on the amount of hydrogen addition and the swirl intensity. The lean stability limit is extended by hydrogen addition, and is reduced for higher swirl intensity at lower equivalence ratio. The addition of hydrogen increases the NOx emission, however, this effect can be reduced by increasing either the excess air or swirl intensity. The NOx emission of hydrogen enriched methane premixed flame was lower than the corresponding diffusion flame under the fuel lean condition.

  • The control of flame shapes in a laminar pre-mixed flame has been experimentally investigated for propane/air pre-mixed laminar flames. Flames of different size and shapes are observed with heated wires or by controlling the equivalence ratio and flow rate of a mixture. The characteristics of the partitioning of a flame or the merge of flames are analyzed and explained by considering the balance between laminar flame speed and upstream mixture velocity. A combustor might be sized down while maintaining its heat production rate the same by partitioning a flame established in it. When the equivalence ratio of mixture is decreased, individual flames are merged together and the upstream mixture velocity can be practically decreased on a nozzle having opening ratio less than unity. As a result, the flame shape is to he adjusted until the newly established balanced condition is satisfied, and then. the stable combustion can be achieved again.

  • The effects of carbon dioxide addition to oxygen have been investigated with swirl-stabilized premixed methane flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor. The methane fuel and oxydant mixture gas ($CO_2$ and $O_2$) were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through different degrees of swirl vanes. The flame characteristics were examined for different amount of carbon dioxide addition to the methane fuel and different swirl strengths. The effects of carbon dioxide addition and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using chemiluminescence techniques to provide information about flow field. The results show that the flame area increases at upstream of reaction zone because of increase in recirculation flow for increase in swirl intensity. The flame area is also increased at the downstream zone by recirculation flow because of increase in swirl intensity which results in higher centrifugal force. The OH and CH radical intensity of reaction zone decrease with carbon dioxide addition because the carbon dioxide plays a role of dilution gas in the reaction zone.

The hydrogen-enriched methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through different degrees of swirl vanes. The hydrogen addition effects and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using micro-thermocouple, particle image velocity meter (PIV) and chemiluminescence techniques to provide information about flow field. The results show that the flame area increases at upstream of reaction zone because of increase in ignition energy from recirculation flow for increase in swirl intensity. The flame area is also increased at the downstream zone by recirculation flow because of increase in swirl intensity which results in higher centrifugal force. The higher combustibility of hydrogen makes reaction faster, raises the temperature of reaction zone and expands the reaction zone, consequently recirculation flow to reaction zone is reduced. The temperature of reaction zone increases with hydrogen addition even though the adiabatic flame temperature of the mixture gas decreases with increase in the amount of hydrogen addition in this experiment condition because the higher combustibility of hydrogen reduces the cooler recirculation flow to the reaction zone.

  • This study investigates the effects of different kind fuels on the flame structure by using the numerical simulation in triple flame made by a co-flowing fuels-air stream based on the elementary chemical reaction mechanism. Methane and Hydrogen were used as fuel for this study. In order to interpret the result of the study on numerical simulation Skeletal chemistry is employe as the elementary chemical reaction mechanism for methane Gutheil's as an offset ele-mentary chemical reaction mechanism for hydrogen. The result of this study is as follows. In com-parison between the apparent burning velocity change of triple flame and the one-dimensional pre-mixed flame hydrogen fuel flame is higher than methane fuel flame. The flame thrusts out for-ward in the down stream of the boundary between air-fuel mixture and air stream and a part of the flow is bent and forks out in this protruding flame so that a triple flame is originated.

The methane fuel and oxidant mixture gas ($CO_2$ and $O_2$) were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through different degrees of swirl vanes. The flame characteristics were examined for various amount of carbon dioxide addition to the methane fuel and various swirl strengths. The effects of carbon dioxide addition and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using chemiluminescence techniques to provide information about flow field. The results show that the hot combustion zone increases at the upstream reaction zone because of an increase in the recirculation flow for an increase in swirl intensity. The hot combustion zone is also increased at the downstream zone by recirculation flow because of an increase in swirl intensity which results in higher centrifugal force. The OH and CH radical intensities of reaction zone decrease with carbon dioxide addition because the carbon dioxide plays a role of diluted gas in the reaction zone.

  • The combustion characteristics of methane/hydrogen pre-mixed flame have been investigated with swirl stabilized flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor with constant heat load of 5.81 kW. Hydrogen/methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through a burner nozzle with different degrees of swirl angle. The effects of hydrogen addition and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using particle image velocimetry (PIV), micro-thermocouples, various optical interference filters and gas analyzers to provide information about flow velocity, temperature distributions, and species concentrations of the reaction field. The results show that higher swirl intensity creates more recirculation flow, which reduces the temperature of the reaction zone and, consequently, reduces the thermal NO production. The distributions of flame radicals (OH, CH, C2) are dependent more on the swirl intensity than the percentage of hydrogen added to methane fuel. The NO concentration at the upper part of the reaction zone is increased with an increase in hydrogen content in the fuel mixture because higher combustibility of hydrogen assists to promote faster chemical reaction, enabling more expansion of the gases at the upper part of the reaction zone, which reduces the recirculation flow. The CO concentration in the reaction zone is reduced with an increase in hydrogen content because the amount of C content is relatively decreased.

진동하는 층류예혼합화염의 불안정성에 관한 연구 (A study of Instability on Oscillating Laminar Premixed Flames)

  • When a circular cylinder is placed at the center of a slot burner nozzle, once stable Woflhard-Parker type laminar lean premixed flame is changed to an oscillating flame with self-induced noise. The wrinkled flame surface showed the same pattern and frequency of the Karman vortex street at the downstream of a circular cylinder. The interaction of flame with Karman vortex street is observed to be responsible for flame oscillation. The measured flame oscillation frequency is very similar to the estimated Karman vortex shedding frequency based on the St-Re relationship of the flow past circular cylinder, which could be considered as a strong evidence for the interaction between laminar pre-mixed flame and a Karman vortex street. As Reynolds number increases oscillation frequency decreases and the self-induced noise level increases as well as the flame front is more severly wrinkled. This result suggests that the flame/vortex interaction becomes more active at higher Re.

  • An experimental study in the dual swirl burner was conducted to analyze the temperature characteristics in the combustion field. The dual swirl burner consists of a main swirling pre-mixed flame with tangential swirler surrounding a pilot which can stabilize a diffusion flame or a partially premixed flame with vane swirler depending on whether fuel is supplied at the exit plane or further upstream. The purpose of this study is to analyse experimentally the characterization of flame temperature in the reacting zone, specially, according to the various combustor diameters like 80mm, 100mm, 130mm and 150mm(O.D). As a result, the temperatures of combustion field were decreased as the diameter of combustor increased. Therefore, these results can be expected that the larger diameter of combustor tend to emit less NOx emission than the small combustor.

스파크점화직분식 CNG의 점화성 및 연소화염 특성에 대한 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Ignition Probability and Combustion Flame Characteristics of Spark-Ignited Direct-Injection CNG)

  • For the SI engines, at only full load, the pumping loss has a negligible effect, while at part load conditions, the pumping loss increases. To avoid the pumping loss, the spark-ignited engines are designed to inject gasoline directly into the combustion chamber. In the spark-ignited direct-injection engines, ignition probability is important for successful combustion and the flame propagation characteristics are also different from that of pre-mixed combustion. In this paper, a visualization experiment system is designed to study the ignition probability and combustion flame characteristics of spark-ignited direct-injection CNG fuel. The visualization system is composed of a combustion chamber, fuel supply system, air supply system, electronic control system and data acquisition system. It is found that ambient pressure, ambient temperature and ambient air flow velocity are important parameters which affect the ignition probability of CNG-air mixture and flame propagation characteristics and the injected CNG fuel can be ignited directly by a spark-plug under proper ambient conditions. For all cases of successful ignition, the flame propagation images were digitally recorded with an intensified CCD camera and the flame propagation characteristics were analyzed.
