  • The heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop during gas cooling process of carbon dioxide in a helically coiled tube were investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in the refrigerant loop. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable speed pump, a mass flowmeter, a pre-heater, a gas cooler(test section) and an isothermal tank. The test section is a double pipe type heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus. It was made of a copper tube with the inner diameter of 4.85 [mm], the outer diameter of 6.35 [mm] and length of 10000 [mm]. The refrigerant mass fluxes were 200${\sim}$600 [kg/$m^2$s] and the average pressure varied from 7.5 [MPa] to 10.0 [MPa]. The main results were summarized as follows: The heat transfer coefficient of supercritical $CO_2$ increases, as the cooling pressure of gas cooler decreases. And the heat transfer coefficient increases with the increase of the refrigerant mass flux. The pressure drop decreases in increase of the gas cooler pressure and increases with increase the refrigerant mass flux.

  • The heat transfer coefficient and Pressure drop during gas cooling process of $CO_2$ (R-744) in inclined helical coil copper tubes were investigated experimentally. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver. a variable-speed pump. a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and a inclined helical coil type gas cooler (test section). The test section consists of a smooth copper tube of 2.45mm inner diameter. The refrigerant mass fluxes were varied from 200 to $600[kg/m^2s]$ and the inlet Pressures of gas cooler were 7.5 to 10.0 [MPa]. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ in the inclined helical coil tubes increases with the increase of mass flux and gas cooling pressure of $CO_2$. The pressure drop of $CO_2$ in the gas cooler shows a relatively good agreement with those Predicted by Ito's correlation developed for single-phase in a helical coil tube. The local heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ agrees well with the correlation by Pitla et al. However, at the region near pseudo-critical temperature. the experiments indicate higher values than the Pitla et al. correlation. Therefore. various experiments in the inclined helical coil tubes have to be conducted and it is necessary to develop the reliable and accurate prediction determining the heat transfer and pressure drop of $CO_2$ in the inclined helical coil tubes.

The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump. a mass flow meter a pre-heater and a helically coiled type gas cooler (test section). The refrigerant mass fluxes are varied from 200 to $800kg/m^2s$ and the inlet pressures of gas cooler are 7.5 to 10.0 MPa. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ in a helically coiled tube are higher than those in a horizontal tube. The Pressure drop of $CO_2$ in the gas cooler shows a relatively good agreement with those predicted by Ito's correlation developed for single-phase in a helically coiled tube. The local heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ agrees well with the correlation by Pitla et al. The pressure drop of $CO_2$ in the gas cooler shows relatively good coincidence with those predicted by Ito's correlation developed for single-phase in a helical coil tube. The local heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ is well coincident with the correlation by Pitla et al. • In this study, a performance analysis code was developed for the off-design performance analysis of air turbo ramjet(ATR) engine, and the analyses were performed for the pre-designed ATR engine at several operating points in the envelope. Variable intake and thrust nozzle were assumed to cover the wide envelope. Mathematical models for each components were developed to calculate their off-design performance. Simple design formulas were introduced for some components to explore the performance variation versus the design parameters. As a result, the pre-defined engine couldn't cover the entire mission profile. And it was also found that the effect of the pre-cooler was not very great, especially in the region of low Mach number.

  • The effects of hydrogen enrichment to methane have been investigated with swirl-stabilized premixed hydrogen-enriched methane flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor. The hydrogen-enriched methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through different degrees of swirl vanes. The flame characteristics were examined for different amount of hydrogen addition to the methane fuel and different swirl strengths. The hydrogen addition effects and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using micro-thermocouple, particle image velocity meter (PIV) and chemiluminescence techniques to provide information about flow field. The results show that the flame area increases at upstream of reaction zone because of increase in ignition energy from recirculation flow for increase in swirl intensity. The flame area is also increased at the downstream zone by recirculation flow because of increase in swirl intensity which results in higher centrifugal force. The higher combustibility of hydrogen makes reaction faster, raises the temperature of reaction zone and expands the reaction zone, consequently recirculation flow to reaction zone is reduced. The temperature of reaction zone increases with hydrogen addition even though the adiabatic flame temperature of the mixture gas decreases with increase in the amount of hydrogen addition in this experiment condition because the higher combustibility of hydrogen reduces the cooler recirculation flow to the reaction zone.

  • This paper describes experimental investigation on neon refrigeration system using commercial helium compressor. In this paper, neon refrigeration cycle is calculated with assumption of ideal heat exchanger. From analysis, 32.6 K of the lowest temperature and 0.945 of quality after expansion are predicted. Cryogenic heat exchangers for pre cooler and main heat exchanger are designed and fabricated with configuration of tube-in-tube heat exchanger. In experiments, cooling performance test are performed as variation of charging pressure and orifice hole diameter. From experimental results, the lowest temperature of 44.0 K was measured with 500 ${\mu}m$ orifice and 1500 kPa of charging pressure.
